It's a program the USDA put out for non profits. In our area it was supposed to be kept "hush hush" and not spoken about publicly. Was trying to figure that one out because it's a known program. My only guess is that the website lists "church" and they don't want to be known as such....maybe. I dunno, but this is the world government providing.....not dear ol' guy upstairs. All the churches can get it. 😂

JW Response to COVID
by optimisticskeptic ini haven't been on here in quite some time so i apologize if i missed a similar thread already (i did look for one :) ) anyways, just to be clear i think the jw response to covid in general has been really positive and proactive and they've done really well trying to educate people on covid, doing zoom meetings, etc to prevent spread within the congregations.
the part that i find interesting is how compliant and non-apocalyptic the branch has been during all of this.
even as someone who's a bit of a skeptic i found myself wondering if this might be the beginning of the end between covid, economic upheaval, and blm.

I think their response had a lot to do with the fact that they are in NY which was the first U.S. area to be hardest hit. The mumbling of the locals though are intent on putting meaning to all the current events. I think the GB are figuring out that doing things electronically is cost beneficial rather than renting huge facilities for conventions and maintaining expenses for KH. I wouldn't be surprised to see some serious changes in the next 6 months to how worship is done. As unpleasant as times are right now, I will say that as a PIMO, I'm not complaining. It's so easy to sit on the edges now.

JW vs. Mormon with regards to homosexuality
by Downtowner ini find it ironic that jw.org publishes an article about homosexuality on the day i received july 2020 issue if the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints magazine "ensign" which also has an article on same-sex attraction.
.
regardless, the lds article comes across as more caring than the jw article although in the end members in good standing cannot act upon their same-sex attraction in either religion..

Not too surprising since June is LGBTQ+ awareness month.

Ugh, couldn't even watch the whole thing...too familiar for me, except I was the girl. I vividly remember being told to have nothing to do with the guy if I wanted to come back and be happy. I was like...but he's the father, he has rights. Jokes on them though as I've been married to him for 16 years and finally woke up. So glad my kids won't have to ever be treated this way.

Huge JW storyline (blood) on Chicago Med (US TV Show)
by tresdecu inanyone else watch chicago med last night??
one of the writers had a bone to pick...made the dubs look like a cult.
(not hard to do, i know) very realistic, and they got all the lingo right.

Will is the red headed doctor.
This is the 2nd time they've done a JW storyline so someone in the writing department is familiar with the JW practices.

What amazed me with this article is how out of touch most of the witnesses are. A lot of comments about how wonderful Jah ("the org") is for providing the information and staying ahead of the world in these matters. This being a worldly issue we see in so many other churches (i had to cover a chuckle at that one). They are so clueless!!
I think my favorite is still the week before when they called themselves "spiritual physicians"...

Hmm, interesting. Maybe it was a regional thing.

Does anyone know when they started allowing children to be baptized? I know my mother said you had to be 18 in the 60s/70s. When was that lifted?

Why do CO's refuse to strip Elders of their position?
by Tenacious inin several congregations i attended many elders were downright evil and flat out drunk with power.. many times i personally knew of things done by them that would have been a disfellowshipping offense had they not been elders.
and even though many times these issues and spiritual atrocities were reported to the co's and hq they would many times (if not all the time), get off with a mere slap on the wrist or a forced apology.. why do you believe elders are so protected?.
my theory is the authority integrity within the congregation.

I do agree that there are elders that are definitely in it for the power and control and I have seen my fair share of incidences that were looked over or swept under the carpet through the years - especially as an elders kid. However, I have seen the contrary. In a neighboring town, a whole congregation body was removed sans one by the CO because they were dealing harshly and emotionally with the cong. These were the elders we saw on the assembly programs always and finally a no BS CO came through and said no more. They brought in other elders from the surrounding area. I have also seen removals as well of individual elders. So, I think it just depends on the area ("we" have major growth right now) and the men coming through.
