bohm, this is a wonderful piece of work!
What doe the dotted lines on the graphs mean though, please?
below are the average occurances of specific words plottet as a function of year for the watchtower.
the occurences has been normalized such that for instance an occurance of 0.1 correspond to the given word being used an average of 0.1 times per page in the watchtower for that year.
(a page is assumed to contain 3000 characters).. any good ideas?

all of us who have any ties to the jws know that they have their own vernacular, their own slang.
sure, there are formal titles that we can't really get away from: pioneer, ministerial servant, elder, ______ overseer, governing body, the (watchtower) society, etc.
but there are plenty of other bits of parlance they use that i can do without.... for example:.
Meek = teachable...i.e. a sucker with eyes glazing over ..
during sunday's program of the dc..."donations" came up and there was mention of using "debit and credit cards" wow!....
so i started thinking... we have an assembly hall in our town?
10 mins from where we have our conventions.
spending the family's annual vacation budget to stay in an approved hotel and buy approved food
Is this so in the UK too? I've never heard of it. It's not the case in my area.
any of us who were jw's fell for one kind of fraud.
(faithful and discreet slave/governing body).
we were perfectly sincere.
Terry, what an interesting thread!
I'm a mixture. Part of me falls for all manner of weirtd and wonderful things, but it's held in check by the other part of me that is insistently logical and scientific in approach, so that everything gets subjected to severe scrutiny.
Which just about sums up why I've been drawn to the JW's and end up here....
i retired in the middle of may.. i know many of you would love to have endless free time on your hands too.. right?.
ummm, well..... i'm use to being very active.
i use to stand on my feet eight hours a day.. at the bookstore i'd have to squat, stoop, stretch, lift, walk.. i had to sort, answer question, make change.
Comparing Mormons with JW's? Go for it Terry. You're not nuts. It's a great idea.
Only thing is, you might end up nuts or at least wishing you'd never started it...but I bet you'll get a lot of fun out of it along the way!
did anyone else catch this in the talk at the convention 'are you behaving as kingdom citizen?'.

It is very unlikely you will be appointed an MS or Elder if you don't maintain a minimum number of hours.
i didn't want it to get buried and i'd really like to know.. so i knew pretty much what he was saying was true, but what i don't get is how the creative accounting works.. i mean you have to show expenses on the ledger - and i mean real expenses, like the co/do expenses along with receipts.. you have actual costs for the power coming into the building.
the paper supplies and cleaning supplies.
the vacuum cleaners and mops and other sundry items, and you have to have receipts for all that.. i also know that when you made a "donation" it was off the books at the circuit level as far as accounts were concerned.. but how is money not being accounted for?.

"illustration"
I was very surprised when I discovered that JW's call parables "illustrations". I mean why, for goodness' sake?
i want to read it and both laugh at it and pity the poor children who are enslaved by its guidance!.
