OK, spill the beans, which one of us wrote into Biblical Archaeology Review this month about the pronunciation of YHWH?
by dropoffyourkeylee inhere's the subject:.
the "q&c" questions and comments section of the journal 'biblical archaeology review' (one of my favorite magazines), jan/feb 2013 , p. 68, someone from illinois wrote the following question:.
quote: "we've often heard that 'jehovah' is an amalgamation of the unpronounced tetragrammaton (yhwh) and, when spoken, is pronounced "lord" (adonai).

Fascinating. No time now to absorb all this, but I'll do so later.
Currently up to my eyes in Sellotape and paper!

"From my theological background, every one of us is called to be a faithful and wise servant. A servant serves. I have kept that in mind as I was promoted to greater positions of authority. Those in authority serve others, so that others can do the best job that they can."
That has always been my understanding too, jgnat. The passage concerned is a parable, not a prophecy, as the JW's have it. When I said that to my study conductor she treated me as if I was educationally retarded.
When did the faithful slave nonsense begin, in Watchtower history? Was it there from the start?

This is really interesting.
So this would explain why the name Jehovah is omitted from other Bible translations, even the newest version of the Jerusalem Bible?
I'm particularly interested in the distinction you make between God and Jehovah. Is this really the case? It would be good to get further input, with references here. Leolaia, maybe? Anyone?

The 144,000
by dabster ini was reading in revelation 7 yesterday, where the 12 tribes of the sons of israel are named and where we learn that 12,000 from each tribe are sealed.
how do the jws explain that the 144,000 are identified as israel - and identified so specifically that the 12 tribes are named?
be gentle with me when answering.

Am I alone in finding I mentally glaze over when I read posts like that of templijah above?
When I read things like "Bridal number" and "Christ's poly-kingship God appointed agency" my brain short-circuits.

Jehovah's Witnesses came round to my house
by Chariklo ina couple of days ago, jehovah's witnesses came round to my house.
nothing exceptional in that, you might say.
it happens every day, all over the world.. but those of you who know me, or who have followed my story, know how traumatised i was when i finally got away from them, and you'll remember that i wrote a letter three or four weeks after walking away, ending all contact.

Update!!
This afternoon my JW window cleaner came round to clean the windows. He is a keen young guy, surely can't be more than 22-ish.
totally committed, mum a pioneer, Dad a ministerial servant, and he too is a ministerial servant, very bright, university material for sure, could have had a promising future in something. His brother, by the way, is disfellowshipped, and never spoken of. But this guy...future elder, maybe future youngest ever elder!
So, picture it, he came to the door, announced his presence, set to with the washing...and there he was, face to face, on the other side of the glass, with the prettiest tree and most gorgeous star on top, glowing with ever-changing pretty colours.
I did enjoy it!

signaled a fall for ancient babylon.. .

We can date people by their toys!
Those of us growing up just after the Second World War have somewhat different memories to those with more recent childhoods!
