family is important. give them an opportunity to share time with your kids, but with strict rules not to preach or teach JW ideas to them at all.

Are my children in danger of being indoctrinated if I let them spend the night with their JW family?
by Butterflyleia85 inso... i'm writing because i have mixed feelings.
keeping my kids safe is my goal... until they are old enough to understand and reason on their own.
my mother gave me the tapes (that i gave her back in december) of combating mind control by steven hassan, saying that she didn't have a tape player... reminded me of three years ago when i gave her crisis of conscience by ray franz and she said it's to big book to read and she's not a reader.

by punkofnice in....every form of government there is?.
the watchtower claims this is why armageddon hasn't come yet....apparently ol' j-man is showing how awful man is at governing himself.

fantastic, much respect and kudos for taking the effort and time to be prepared to help those two people. I hope they think about it, all these incidents contribute to people leaving on occasion. I wish I had met you as a householder when I was a JW, The householders that did make me think remain in mymemory to this day.

Largest Genome Ever Sequenced - and it's 82% Junk
by cofty inby developing new techniques, a team of scientists led by david neale at the university of california have succeeded in sequencing the genome of the loblolly pine pinus taeda.. the genome is 16 billion base pairs long - 7 times larger than the human genome.
so why does it take so much dna to make a tree?
well it turns out it doesn't.. the new sequence confirmed that the loblolly genome is so large because it is crammed full of invasive dna elements that copied themselves around the genome.

Seriously? 2,000 years of continuously diverging opinion about "interpretation" isn't enough time to sort it out?
by suavojr inthe current jw's who are inside (the conscience class) will have to endure another year of jw's pretending to please jesus with their bad imitation of the lords supper.
2000 years of people who could never be sure they had "the truth.
" what are the chances it'll come out in the next 2000?.

DJS, i know what you mean, but evolution is just the study of how an animal changes over time, but sure it instantly rules out a biblical god or Quranic god.

Vid, your perspective on why it is termed junk is out of context.
I remember the first time I saw the left recurrent laryngeal nerve. Nerves simply conduct a charge. Because of how we evolved from a fish history, our nerve passes its end point and wraps under the aorta (blood vessel from the heart) and then goes back up to where it is supposed to go. It is 11 inches longer than it needs to be. It would be ridiculous to claim it was designed, we can see from evolution exactly why it follows an illogical silly path.
When I mentioned this to JW family and pals etc at the time, they all without hesitation said we obviously dont yet understand why it is that longand in the future scientists may just find out.....
This backward, ignorant thinking, would be harmful to progress and science, but thankfully we don't think like that.
As for your appendix.......facepalm and sigh.

I remember my 'did a god really use THIS crappy method of communication?' Why not have it written into the rock of the earth in a single language we all know, an un changeable, infinite lasting rock..... But nah.... lets use dumb humans to pass the message on by oral story for thousands of years then write hundreds of scrolls and then let the catholic church choose an official collection of these stories.

Order in the universe
by Rattigan350 inthis topic was covered in book study last night.
some commented that the universe is ordered and the stars don't collide.. that has nothing to do with order.
it is more to do with that there is more space between the stars and planets and things go between them if they were in the same area.. and do they not consider that the many things that colliided with the moon to make those crators?.

my goodness religious people are so fragile.....
There is context to this terminology Vid, we mentioned the usefulness of the junk dna almost immediatly this thread started. You can recycle a used plastic coke bottle, but it is still 'junk'.
It bothers you because you think this fact contributes to proving your perception of god to be wrong, the perfect designer. Tough shit. You can't go around telling people what parts of life offend you or you dislike because of its implication to you, grow up and move on. I have heard this junk dna nonsense several times by ignorant stubborn religious people and it is so annoying.
We don't need our appendix, but of course it does something, it is living tissue, a part of the intestine...so religious people love to copy and paste uses for vistigial, useless organs, because the implication bothers them.
It is time to grow up....... there is a region of junk dna, garbage....but it can become useful. A mutation is a mistake, an error, but it can become useful, mthat is evolution. But junk is still junk, an error is still an error and useless tissue is still useless.

P.s......to be fair PZ myers is a bit of a dick....but his data is the data...his evidence the evidence. His personality is insignificant.

Want to know why people accept evolution ?
by snare&racket indo you have questions about or want to understand evolution?
it is a difficult concept to communicate and so if it is not explained well , it is understandable that we would dismiss it.. i sincerely want to talk with people who want to learn more or see what all the fuss is about.
we are all learning and increasing our knowledge all the time and it is good to go over facts with critical eye.. evolution we can discuss, looking at the foundational facts and evidence, one at a time for you to go and check, agree or disagree with and return.. no pressure to accept it, you can decide for yourself, also no mocking etc of what you have to say.. .

Disposable hero, now can you summarise what you think we know about the fossil record, what you think fossils are, what about them led to the idea of evolution.
yeah i think discussing this stuff and realising what people believe is important, because how else can we signpost them to info. I am sure there are anonymous readers that will appreciate your input and explinations.
I must admit, I was very suprised at your explination of evolution. Only 7 years ago, I would have said 'we used to be monkeys?'.......shameful face.
