I travelled the country on a train today, all evening looking at the full moon through the window of the carriage...... I have said it several times, but again the pagan foundations of such rituals are so obvious now...
A full moon....
The blood and body of a god....
The blood and bones being passed & consumed by those chosen by a greater god....
So gods, full moons, drinking blood, and ritual....erm "Hello y'all, tis probably pagan!"

HOME SCHOOL and the upcoming generation of scientifically illiterate kids
by Terry inwhen i worked for a book store i became familiar with beka text books for home school.. i spoke with the mothers who came looking for them.
i realized something didn't smell right.. then, i realized there are a couple of generations of fundamentalist kids who have had no exposure.
to the scientific method, science facts or any conversancy with physics or biology or history as a result of beka textbooks.. in a nutshell here is the situation:.

Look at the stats it said most of homeschooled are children of very wealthy parents, homeschooling means private tuition by expensive teachers, not the young people ask book and a math book from Amazon to read over between ministry.
I assumed this thread was largely pointing at the rise in JW kids getting homeschooled and religious parents segregating their kids out of fear. The statistics you need are very different to these.

Great teacher, I am glad you spotted the obvious...... the report is on the best home schoolers who have done well enough to attain college. By definition they have achieved much. The data that is important, is a measure of ....all....home schooled students against traditional means. For their whole education and overall achievment. This is important as home schoolers tend to do well but finish witn far fewer qualifications due to the constraints of home teaching and nearly all don't go beyond a basic high school education without entering school.
Of course there will be SOME people at home getting the best tuition available, hired tutors, coaching, one on one teaching all day with specialists in all subjects.........then there is the child of a JW window cleaner. JW's aee the poorest and least educated large religious denomination in the world!
Some parents opt to teach their children, despite neither being qualified to teach or educated. It is laying the odds of educatiinal success for the child at almost impossible in these circumstances. I have seen this happen, I know JW kids that have had this and now are on state benefits.
One JW I grew up with did have home schooling, his mother was a retired teacher. He scored very highly......the problem being he only took and passed one exam! 12 years of schooling for a maths high school certificate. Compare that to the average student who can take up to 11.
I know and spend time with kids who have had the best education for sale in the UK, it does not compare to the home schooled JW's in my old congregations and yet they are all in the same job market. A child in school spends 9:00- 3:30 in classrooms (bar 1.5 hrs) learning up to 11 topics, it is impossible to replicate at home without a lot of money. Of course the one's that have the money have the great grades...& continue in college. But it isn't JW kids and we all know it.

I sincerely worry about these kids, thankfully in the UK there is a means to go back to school and try again at an older age, when you have your own autonomy and not the dictatorial silence of a JW kid.
The big issue is they ate raised poor and ignorant, so acting on one's autonomy is easier said and hoped for than done.
I bumped into a JW family in the local hospital, one I knew well but hadn't seen in some years. The daughter, home schooled for years said she wanted to be a nurse. I asked her how she thinks people become nurses? She shrugged her shoulders. She was 16. That was a year ago and she is about to get married to a JW.
These kids can't spell, can't do math, have no scientific or historical appreciation, have no social skills, don't live in the real world and are expected to survive. A large number of kids from our area began homeschooling just as I went to university. I was told recently that a large number are now on a job seekers government benefit. Though to the unaware it may seem infuriating, to us exjw's it should make us sad.....more lives wasted at the feet of Watchtower.
Shame on the parents who sell their kids future for the reward of their own appeasement of ignorant fears and emotional flaws.

i, personally, think it has been fantastic.
i hear many complain its not informative enough or its sugar coated or whatever but i think its brilliant for the mere fact that its dumbed down for us lamen folk...my wife still doesnt get some of it and i agree...but that, for me, shows how comex real life is....its not easy as many religionists believe.....
