Bible's mention of physical beauty- why?
by Magnum infor years, as i've read through the bible, i've wondered why bible writers were concerned about physical beauty (see references below)?
i realize it's human nature to be interested in beauty, but why did they see fit to record in the so-called "word of god" the fact that some of the people they wrote about were beautiful?
looks are not supposed to matter according to jw doctrine (and probably the doctrine of many christian-professing sects).

The world has nothing to fear from the US losing power
3rd May 2014
As China looks set to overtake the US as the world's largest economy, a multipolar world can only be good for democracy. The news that China will displace the US as the world's largest economy this year is big news. For economists who follow these measurements, the tectonic shift likely occurred a few years ago. But now the World Bank is making it official, so journalists and others who opine on world affairs will have to take this into account. And if they do so, they will find that this is a very big deal indeed.
What does it mean? First, the technicalities: the comparison is made on apurchasing power parity (PPP) basis, which means that it takes into account the differing prices in the two countries. So, if a dollar is worth 6.3 renminbi today on the foreign exchange market, it may be that 6.3 renminbi can buy a lot more in China than one dollar can buy in the US. The PPP comparison adjusts for that; that is why China's economy is much bigger than the measure that you have most commonly seen in the media, which simply converts China's GDP to dollars at the official exchange rate.
The PPP measure is a better comparison for many purposes. For example, take military spending: the money that China needs to build a fighter jet or pay military personnel is a lot less than the equivalent in dollars that the US has to pay for the same goods and services. This means that China has a bigger economy than that of the US, for purposes of military spending. And in a decade, the Chinese economy will most likely be about 60 percent bigger than the US economy.
President Obama has just returned from a trip to Asia where he was criticised for not being tougher with China. However, Americans may want to consider whether "containing" China with a "pivot" to Asia is an affordable proposition. When the US had an arms race with the Soviet Union, the Soviet economy was maybe one-quarter the size of ours. We have not experienced an arms race with a country whose economy is bigger than ours, and whose economic size advantage is growing rapidly. Are Americans prepared to give up social security or Medicare in order to maintain US military supremacy in Asia? To ask this question is to answer it.
Fortunately, such an arms race is not necessary. China is a rising power, but the government does not seem to be interested in building an empire. Unlike the US, which has hundreds of military bases throughout the globe, China doesn't have any. The Chinese government seems to be very focused on economic growth; trying to become a developed country as soon as it can. Since China has 1.3 billion people, having an economy the size of the US means that average living standards are less than one-fourth of ours. They have a long way to go to become a rich country.
Of course, just because an arms race is unnecessary or unwinnable doesn't mean it can't get started. The Washington foreign policy establishment is much accustomed to the authority, prestige, and privilege of being the overwhelmingly dominant power on the planet. And as we saw during the eastward expansion of Nato in the 1990s – now coming back to haunt us in a new cold war with Russia – there are politically powerful military contractors that can also have a voice in US foreign and military policy.
The American people, according to polling data, are of another point of view. They are largely tired of unnecessary wars and mostly sympathetic to Obama's response to critics while in the Philippines: "Why is it that everybody is so eager to use military force, after we've just gone through a decade of war at enormous cost to our troops and to our budget?" It is arguable that the only reason our government is able to maintain an imperial foreign policy is that so few Americans serve in the military and pay the ultimate price for it.
Still, there is a powerful ideology of American exceptionalism and a widespread belief that if the US does not run the world, somebody worse – possibly China – will. The fact that the US and its European allies still have more democratic societies with more developed rule of law than most middle-income countries – despite the setbacks of the past decade – reinforces this notion that the world will be worse off if the US loses power and influence.
But the US lost most of its influence in Latin America over the past 15 years, and the region has done quite well, with a sharp reduction in poverty for the first time in decades. The Washington-based International Monetary Fund has also lost most of its influence over the middle-income countries of the world, and these have also done remarkably better in the 2000s.
In the 18th century, those who opposed democratic revolutions like that of the United States had dystopian visions of governance without monarchy. So, too, our foreign policy establishment cannot imagine a multipolar world where the US and its allies must negotiate more and give orders less often. But economic trends are making this reality inevitable, and Americans should embrace it. Whatever the internal political systems of the countries whose representation in the international arena will increase, the end result is likely to be more democratic governance at the international level, with a greater rule of international law, fewer wars, and more social and economic progress.

JW.org says that the Bible knew that the earth was suspended in empty space
by opusdei1972 in"the earth is suspended in empty space.
(job 26:7) many ancient peoples believed that the world was a flat disk supported by a giant or an animal, such as a buffalo or a turtle.".

When it says in the bible 'circle of the earth' it is a reference to a flat disc that we seemed to walk on.
HUNG on nothing is a reference to the belief that it was indeed hung on nothing but supported by pillars.
Watchtower is simply being dishonest or are ignorant about the context and ancient Jewish beliefs.
On the other hand, a thousand years plus before the Jewish people even existed, Egyptians had worked out the circumferance of the SPHERICAL earth to three decimal places, using trigonometry.

No Refusal Blood Checkpoints!
by minimus inin oregon, during the 4th of july weekend, troopers will be conducting checkpoints to see if someone has been drinking.
if someone refuses a breath test, they will be forced to have their blood extracted from them.. what do you think of this?.
-
snare&racket
There is a reason, the longer they have to wait between the scene (roadside) and testing, the more evidence is lost.
Taking a blood sample is the most accurate way of knowing the alcohol level in the system, with time passing.
I guess option one.... convict all breath test refusals or option 2 you get an accurate and fair second chance with the blood test.
It may be the 'accurate' breath test machines we have in the uk are not that accurate with time passing, anyone who has watched the police chase tv programs in the Uk have seen people blow over the limit at the roadside then some time later, blow under at the station, leaving with a warning.
If it is anything like the uk, only qualified health workers can take blood, police stations here have a visiting nurse that check over inmates and can do bloods. Blood samples can be ruined if done incorrectly. A famous example was the Diana driver who according to blood samples taken by a dodgy unknown health professional, showed him to be over the limit by several times, but coroners argued this because the blood was taken from an open chest wound exposed to many fluids and chemical changes due to the surrounding damaged tissues and car fluids/contaminants.
I don't wish to face an onslaught now, we all respect america for its ideology for freedom, but people seem to be very .......Alex Jones nowadays. Oh dear I'm in trouble now aren't I..
"They are taking my blood, against my will, so they can use my DNA to estimate my coffin size at the FEMA camps, we know this people, because I have seeeeeen the documents! WAKE UP to the new world order before it is too late for your children! Now, over to you Governor Ventura..."
It's just a blood sample.....and it is in the context of a drink driving incident.....

I hate such small minded thinking because it is such a selfish perspective of the world!
As the west has 'struggled' for the last 5 years, China has jumped out of poverty. But no, because we have had 5 years of slightly less cash in our pocket, everything is hurrendous! How ignorant and selfish! Whilst we have suffered one less holiday a year, with the fundamentalists claiming 'Look it's the end of the world' .. rural chinese workers have literally gone from rice fields to office jobs, from bamboo huts to electricity and high rise flats, from disease to medication....
Shanghai in 1990 (top) and in 2010 (bottom)
Start looking a little further than the ten feet around you!
Only a JW would claim that Anglo-America is the one and only CURRENT world power. What utter ignorant nonsense. America and the UK are in debt to China, it has the most exciting economy of all powers and it has the largest military, being twice that of the USA. I am not stupid enough to say the USA is not the most active and influencing nation today, but the UK has no real power, we can't even make our own laws they are made in Brussels. So the ANGLO-America 'prophecy' is already shot down.
The european union, the G4, the Arab League, the UN are powers with no mention in the bible yet they stand alongside the USA today. Russia has just flexed it's muscles without consequence, basically invading two countries and nobody can do a thing, paticularly the USA. This is not the picture of a one world power! Syria is slaughtering its people and the USA can't act because the government knows the media opinion is too fragile and it may be political suicide with public opinion.
It isn't the 1980's anymore, ignorance no loner rules. The world has gotten smaller and smarter, such Watchtower garbage no longer works.

Taking the Watchtowers advice about bloodless surgery has real life and death consequence, made evident here.
How sad, how shameful.

It says much that as a JW I could not even explain the concept and evidence for the big bang and didn't meet a JW that could, yet the WT feel it necessary to NOT start with the mountains of evidence for it, but random decades old quotes from scientists that didn't have access to the evidence we now have.
The WATCHTOWER don't want to understand, they want to undermine, that is no place to start with science and is very dishonest to their readers.
The Jehovah's Witness writers have no place talking science that they don't understand. It would be irresponsible of someone even with a physics degree to write such an article! Anything on this topic from someone less than an expert, and I mean EXPERT, is useless, You need a full picture of cosmology and modern physics just to discuss such topics in an honest manner, never mind publish articles on it.
The realm of physics has exploded in the last 20 years with technology allowing modelling of theories via computers and large hadron colliders allowing physical experimentation of atomical physics for the first time!
Watchtower quoting doubts from stand alone scientists like Hoyle from decades ago is totally disingenuous and irresponsible. The article writer clearly doesn't not understand the topic or worse, does and is being deceitful, they were merely sewing together quotes from scientists asking questions out of context of the mountain of evidence, in order to undermine the big bang theory, NOT to understand it. This is important as I am yet to meet a JW that understands the theory.
In reality, with the big bang theory we have more evidence & more understanding of what went on 13 billion years ago..... than we do the theory of gravity!
Watchtower are just attempting to muddy the waters and make it appear like science is in conflict and unable to find truths. We have only had science as a method to understand the world approx 150 years and it has taken us from riding horses to internationsal space stations. The Watchtower leaders and writers have yet to predict or understand ONE thing correctly and have contributed NIL to society. Compare the progress of science to that of the 150 years of Watchtower, scrambling around in ignorant darkness. In 150 years the self proclaimed uneducated leaders couldn't even agree on what the word 'generation' means. Well, the truth being that armageddon keeps, embarrassing for them, not coming therefore requiring 'new light' on the meaning of the word...... so embarrassing.....who on earth are they to talk shop about cosmology! Really!
