A couple of questions for Reslight2,
1) You wrote,
"Since Russell, who was never speaking on behalf an authoritarian religious organization such the Jehovah's Witnesses, and who disclaimed [b]eing a prophet..."
Q1, Do you have a reference where Russell disclaimed being a prophet?
2) You wrote,
We begin with the announcement of his change of view in 1904:
We now expect that the anarchistic culmination of the great time of trouble which will precede the Millennial blessings will be after October, 1914 A.D.–very speedily thereafter, in our opinion –”in one hour,” “suddenly.” — Universal Anarchy: Just Before or After October, 1914 A.D.? ZWT, July 1, 1904, page 197, Reprints 3389, http://www.agsconsulting.com/htdbnon/htdb0350.htmQ2, Even if Russell correctly changed his understanding that 1914 would be the start of trouble rather than the end of it, we are almost 100 years beyond his prediction that the Millennial blessings would happen 'speedily, in one hour, suddenly, thereafter.' Since nothing happened soon after 1914, why wouldn't he still be a false prophet, teaching his wrong understandings as truth?
3) Regarding the expected return of Christ in 1874, (No Q here, but a comment)
You wrote,
The Watch Tower Society (which did not come into existence until 1881) in the days of Russell never made any prediction at all concerning Christ's "Second Coming". Nor did Russell himself ever make any prediction at all concerning Christ's Second Coming. In 1876, about two years after 1874, Russell accepted Barbour's conclusion that Christ had already returned in 1874, and Russell held to that belief until he died in 1916.
You sound as though Russell himself was not a proponent, nor did he preach about, 1874 being the date of Christ's return, that it was all Barbour's fault and that Russell himself was neutral regarding that date.
The quote below shows that Bro. Keith, one of Russell's "contributors," was "used by the Lord" to give an answer as to why 1873/1874/1875 failed to see Christ's return. Parousia was discovered, and the return was understood by Russell and his followers, from that point on, to have happened invisibly. He considered it "new light" that 1874 was the time that Christ returned invisibly, which "caused all of the former “light” to shine with tenfold brightness."
The point here is that Russell was very much behind the 1874 date for Christ's return.
(W Feb, 1881 p188 par 2 of Reprints)
Looking back to 1871, we see that many of our company were what are known as Second Adventists, and the light they held briefly stated, was that there would be a second advent of Jesus -- that he would come to bless and immortalize the saints, to judge the world and to burn up the world and all the wicked. This, they claimed would occur in 1873, because the 6,000 years from the creation of Adam were complete then.
But prophecies were found which pointed positively to 1874 as the time when Jesus was due to be present, and the resurrection of Daniel was also due as proved by the ending of the jubilee cycles and the 1335 days of Dan. xii.
Carefully they [Second Adventists] examined the chronology but it seemed faultless and positively declared that the 6,000 years ended in 1873... Was an error found? No…the “1335 days” of Daniel could not possibly be prolonged beyond the fall of ‘74 or the spring 1875 and these periods were both past.(Continuing with par 5)
Just at this time Bro. Keith, (one of our contributors) was used of the Lord to throw another beam of light on the subject which brought order out of confusion and caused all of the former “light” to shine with tenfold brightness. Brother K. had been reading carefully Matthew xxiv chapter, using the “Emphatic Diaglott,”…37th and 39th verses… “For as the days of Noah thus will be the presence of the son of man….thus will be the presence of the Son of Man.”
His surprise was, at finding that the Greek word parousia which signifies presence, had in our common version been improperly rendered coming, but the new rendering showed that it was not the act of coming that resembled the days of Noah, but that as in Noah‘s days…it would be at the time of Jesus’ presence at the second advent. -

Will the Watchtowers growth in the third world keep them around for decades to come?
by tootired2care ini suspect the wt is going to continue to see slowing growth in all western lands as time goes on.
it seems to me though that there is so many potential suckers out there in the third world that will keep coming into the wt because of lack of internet, education or falling victim to love bombing as many of us did here at one time.
i think it's going to get really tough for them as the western land money dries up though.

I don,t see much of a growth in third world. My reason, the family unit.
You make a good point about families; they are very tight in some cultures. That may be a tough row to hoe for Watchtower in some areas. I hope so!

Third World countries may keep the Organization growing in numbers, but they can't support themselves financially in the organization. Financial growth will have to come from a different place.
Contributions from the wealthy countries will help, but they seem to be declining. I think real estate sales will be the major source of income that carries the Society forward. The Brooklyn properites alone are worth about 1 Billion dollars, which is enough money to go for decades.

I don't come close to understanding the language, but the photos tell a tale in themselves. Candace Conti's story is being told too!
It's nice to see this kind of attention being brought to Watchtower.

Notjustyet,
"[GB]...will this new light paint us into a corner?"
Whathapened,
"I don't think they thought this through very carefully."
THE GLADIATOR
"That which is crooked cannot be made straight."
I wonder if they Society will be able to explain it's way out of the problems that exist with this new understanding. I agree with the above posters, it doesn't appear they gave it much thought.
There have been at least 4 different understandings of who the Faithful and Discreet Slave is to date. Who's to say there won't be a 5th or a 6th. There were some rapid changes in the explanation of what the 'generation that will not pass away' meant, so if the problems with the latest FDS idea are too big for them to handle there may be another flash of New Light in the not-too-distant future.
What they've got now seems ridiculous. As AnnOMaly and Indian Larry asked, if Jesus appointed the Slave in 1919, and he is supposed to inspect the Slave when he returns, where has he gone. He returned in 1914, but now we have to believe that he left again in 1919? Where did he go? When will he be back?
I can't wait to see Watchtower's clever explanations, but they probably won't float very well.

The Governing Body Rewrites the Organizations Past and Future History
by Cameron_Don inwatchtower annual meeting report.
october 6, 2012. during their annual meeting the governing body announced some changes in their interpretation of (1) the most important scripture in watch-tower theology, and (2) the most important event in watchtower history.
are their changes new light according to proverbs, or refinement according to daniel and malachi?

This brings up another question, Who is the Evil Slave?
Since Jesus doesn't declare his appointed slave to be Faithful or Evil until he returns for the inspection, as of now there is neither. All the accusations the Society has made -- that the anointed ones who leave the Organization are the Evil Slave -- are now without basis.
The GB may be declaring itself to be the Faithful Slave, but until the inspection, which is still future, that label can't be applied.
Am I missing something?

It just defies logic that people (JWs) will put their trust in a group of men who determine all their religious beliefs, their behavior, and life and death matters for them, all based on the idea that they are following the Faithful and Discreet Slave, when for the past 93 years that Slave hasn't even been able to correctly identify itself.
(The Governing Body is understood to be the Slave which was appointed in 1919, but the Governing Body is just now realizing it. How 'spirit directed' is that? Yikes! )
For any lurking JW readers, think about this: Is it really a good idea to put all your trust in such a group of men? If they have been wrong about who they are, and who the Slave is for all these years, how many other things might they also be wrong about?
That these men have been wrong about who they are for almost 100 years suggests an Incompetent Body rather than a Faithful Slave.
