Is Job 1:4 regarding a birthday party
by jwfacts ini have heard it stated before that job 1:4 is referring to job celebrating his children's birthdays.
others have claimed this is not the case.
does anyone have a good explanation of what this scripture is referring to?.

Whether Job's 'day' was his birthday or not seems to make little difference when you accept the Watchtower explanation for accepting other pagan based practices and obversences. Sending flowers to a funeral, wearing a wedding ring, and using a pinjata at a party are all acceptable to JWs even though they have pagan connections.
Concerning the pinjata, the Awake!, 9-22-03 p23, 24 said, "A main concern is, not what the practice meant hundreds of years ago, but how it is viewed today in your area."
If considering ‘how the practice is viewed in your area,‘ and whether or not the practice has ‘lost the original meaning it had hundreds of years ago’ are acceptable logic with one pagan practice, why can’t the same be applied to other practices that have lost their original meanings, like birthdays?
The number of birthday celebrations where someone is beheaded have gotten to be in the minority; at least where I live.

Nicely expressed about using the word '"excuse" to give presents'. Watchtower arrogance. Language that is loaded, loaded, loaded!

@PSacramento,
Thanks for that post. I was not aware there were scholars that viewed Job's day as a birthday. The Living Bible is rendition is great too. This is going into my notes.
Jehovah's Witnesses accept several pagan based practices, such as sending flowers to a funeral, wearing wedding rings, having pinjatas at a party, and wearing pants.
Concerning the pinjata, the Society says,
"A main concern is, not what the practice meant hundreds of years ago, but how it is viewed today in your area." (Awake 9-22-03 p23, 24)
If that good logic can be applied to some pagan practices, why can't it be applied to birthday celebrations and all other pagan based practices as well? Believe it or not, the birthday observances that result in murder are in the minority.

My wife and I too would wrap gifts for our kids. We avoided holidays, per Watchtower teachings, but we used the last day of school as an event to do the same thing. Showered the kids with wrapped gifts, and let the kids know it was their special day. Really it was no different from a birthday celebration, except the Watchtower didn't condemn it.
we don't need holidays as an excuse to give gifts to our children
This is the loaded language that many Witnesses use. Translated it usually means 'we no longer give gifts to our kids, or to anyone else.'
One can also see a lot of bad things such as desperation, anxiety and depression.
Are you aware of the increase in suicides at this time of year
Have you not noticed the desperation, anxiety, and suicides among Jehovah's Witnesses? It's probably the most depressed Christian religion on earth. I have known way too many Witnesses that attempted or committed suicide. Others struggle greatly to reconcile the harsh disfellowshipping rules with Christian love and kindness, and having to shun children or other family members is too much for many of them.
The point was mentioned that every bright light casts a shadow. Why do Witnesses only see the good in their own light, but the shadow in someone else's light? In a left handed way, I am grateful for such a biased point of view, because it helped me to reach the conclusion that the Watchtower is primarily a religion of manipulation, loaded language, and slanted viewpoints. None of which harmonizes with Bible truth.

Heavenly Gates Closed in 1935 Re-opened in 2007
by Alfred insince 1935, the watchtower had been categorically teaching (for over 6 decades) that the heavenly calling of the 144,000 anointed christians had ceased in 1935. this teaching was especially significant to older jws (especially those who spent much of their lives serving the watchtower as pioneers, elders, missionaries, bethelites, etc.
) because many of these would eventually turn their attention to the aging governing body members and feel a sense of relief knowing that the end was drawing ever so near.
in other words, as more governing body members (who were born before 1935) passed away, the closer they would get to their long-awaited reward of surviving armageddon and living on paradise earth where they would finally hug grass-eating lions near a waterfall while marveling at snow-peaked mountains in the distance.

Cults tend to use two languages to get to people. First they come at you with something that generally makes sense, and if it is a Christian cult, they will use scriptures pointing to something good; a better world, a better life, a good life for your kids, etc.
Then, at some point, the language changes from the initial Bible based references to the deeper language of the cult. With the Watchtower, it's talk of the anointed remnant, two classes of Christians, the way to treat those who disagree (aka apostates), false religion, etc. Often the references are not found in the Bible but everyone seems to act like they are. One language gets you in, the other sucks you down and makes you the cult's property.
When the two versions of the Watchtower started, I wondered how much clearer it could be that the Society is speaking two languages, like a cult, rather than the pure language of truth. What other reason could there possibly be for having two versions of the Watchtower Magazine.
(Zeph 3:9, "For then will I turn to the peoples of a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of Jehovah, to serve him with one consent." American Standard Version)
A pure language should be the aim of a truly Christian religion, not two languages.

There was no mention or disagreement that the man I knew was not of the 144,000, and I never heard the '1935' date mentioned before I got online. Is this something they came up with in the 80s/90s, or was it around beforehand?
I too knew a Witness in the 70s, who began to partake in her late 20s or early 30s. I think it caused a little silent murmuring, but the general information at the time is that we can't make judgements about who is and isn't anointed so it just became a non-topic of conversation.
The best Society explanation was that new ones would be anointed to replace unfaithful anointed who had died. Still, the extremely young age didn't make sense.
And you are right about the Society being fairly certain, but still a little ambiguous on the topic. Now the Organization has backed away completely from mentioning a date when the 144,000 was 'sealed.' It's no wonder, since that date too (1935) has fallen completely apart.
