i'd like to hear from those who are currently elders or were formerly elders on your honest feelings about the charges brought against the society and their general policy in handling these matters.
do you think that the society handles child abuse accusations fairly?
or, do you think their policy is abusive?
In the 1980s when I was an Elder we had no real training in areas of marital counseling, teen counseling, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction, transgendered individuals, suicide, nor sexual abuse. It was like handing a scapel to a kid. We did our best to be compassionate and kind but we dealt with some really serious and tragic cases.
designs, why do you think you didn't turn these problem over to people who had training?
i was summoned for jury duty in march of this year.. if i'd been called to serve on a case involving wt, i would not have mentioned my prior association with the jw's.. i wonder if any serving on the jury in the candace conti case did something similar.. theocratic warfare can work both ways, baby!.

Well, it seems to be a minority viewpoint here and not to be a hater, but I really disagree with you, elderlite. How do we fight lies? More lies, I guess.

Nothing, I'm afraid. There aren't enough of you to matter: regular Elders, in their incomeptence, do just about as much damage as you do. Your kids won't grow up to be in the organization? Big deal: retention even among true believers is very low. You take literature and throw it away? So what: nobody gets converted by door-to-door work anyway. You get some happy endings? Who doesn't? Warn off potential converts, do you? If only google existed to do the same thing!

i can't believe what i am reading.. lie: "the lawsuit alleged that watchtower had a policy that instructed elders in its jehovah's witnesses congregations to keep reports of child sex abusers within the religious group secret to avoid lawsuits.".
I had hopes when this story broke that we'd see the first buds of a "Watchtower Spring" opening, that many rank-and-file Witnesses would come to their senses and start challenging the WTS and its corrupt and self-serving Governing Body.
Oh, Quendi, bless your heart! But there was never one chance in hell that this would matter a bit to them! You cannot underestimate JWs. It's like when I was growing up and going to Bob's Big Boy for supper. I always thought I could prepare myself for how awful it was going to be, but it was always worse than I thought. Same thing.

Meanwhile, thousands of bright young JWs, whose vocations should have been medicine, law, business, etc., spent their prime educational years in full-time service learning no particular marketable skills. Turns out that, even among those who wish to remain JWs, actually following the JW advice is a sucker's bet.
