The End of Biblical Studies?
by slimboyfat ina while ago i read a book called the end of biblical studies by evangelical turned sceptical academic hector avalos.
i thought it was really interesting perhaps because it mirrors some of the stages i went through as regards how i viewed the bible as i was leaving the witnesses.
at first i still believed the bible was inspired by god but learned to use different methods to interpret it than witness eisegesis.

Ok. Looking through threads is not really my idea of research, but whatever.

Way Your JW Parents Embarrass You
by Pig inwhat did your parent do that really embarrassed you while you were in school?.
i think the thing i always hated is when my parents had to preach to my teachers.. in grade 6 we were going to watch jamanji but needed consent form because the film was pg13+ and we were 12. my mum sent me to school with a huge letter about spritism.
i was the only one out of about 45 kids who had to sit out.. .

How about going to buy their 16-year-old son a suit because he is going to pioneer?
salesguy: We don't get too may teenagers who want a suit. Special occasion?
Sulla's Mom: He's going into the ministry.
salesguy: Oh! [sideways glance at young Sulla]

Fernando, it seems you have missed the key observation that religion is prior to scripture. Judiasm was being practiced before it was written, Christianity was being practiced before it was written. The "map" of which you speak is the property of the religion that made it. Indeed, the map itself makes this point repeatedly.

I have read where one academic (sorry for the JW-like description, but I really can't recall who said it right this minute) considered the teaching on the "stake" to be the most gratuitous of all the JW beliefs.
From an organizational history perspective, does anyone know if this was related to the adoption by the JWs of Hislop's Two Babylons. I seem to recall that the book was very popular with JWs and served as the basis for lots of discussion back in the day -- was even referenced in some of the literature. I can't recall if it was the basis for the whole cross=Tammuz worship, but that sort of thing was all throughout that book.
The book itself was a classic piece of American Protestant pseudo-intellectual anti-Catholic spew; as such, the JWs slurped it up.

Terry, you are correct about the common Evangelical claim about Biblical inerrancy, "in the original autographs." So, if we one day found the book of Exodus that "Moses" actually wrote or the original gospel of John, that would be free from error. Those can't be found. But this just makes the point that the book slimboyfat is referencing is mostly a product of a specific Evangelical (and JW, for that matter) approach to scripture. As such, it is actually a late innovation to reading the Bible.

So true, InquiryMan. As we can see from the outraged response on this thread upon hearing the news, anti-gay bigotry is alive and well. When will these cavemen ever learn to allow a gay man some simple dignity?

Not to derail the thread, EP, but you must surely have come across a thread or two like that by now. Search the forum on "Flying Spaghetti Monster," or "Sky Wizard," and let me know. But, really, there have been far too many believer-atheist decadent threads to consider. For that matter, re-read the initial post on this thread. The End of Biblical Studies is making pretty much the argument I've tersely described.
