John, one of my best friends is much like the friend you were telling about. He is a JW, attends most of the meetings and does his preaching as required. He has been 'counseled' about being friends with the world (hi, I'm the world, it's nice to meet you). Although I think he is beginning to see problems in his church, he doesn't want to discuss them yet. I'm trying to let him know that our friendship is unconditional and praying that God will give him the wisdom to see the inconsistencies and the courage to walk away. I suspect your friend enjoys your friendship because he can relax and be himself without having to play the part of a good Jehovah's Witness. May God give you patience!

Will You Miss This History Making Event?
by silentlambs inwill you miss this history making event?
as many of you may know in recent weeks wt has moved to silence victims and advocates by disfellowshipping those who have spoken out on child molestation within the organization.
spokesman for jehovahs witnesses have made allegations that are untruthful, from saying that they had no idea who was appearing on dateline, stating that it has been established policy that child molesters work only in twos in the door to door ministry, to stating the judicial meetings were over other sins against god.

Trinity quote....who remembers?
by miner ini'm hoping someone here can help me out.
i am involved in an on-going study with a jehovah's witness and our current topic of discussion is whether or not trinity is a biblical doctrine.
i seem to vaguely remember a wt quote where if people study the bible alone, they end up believing this trinity idea....did i dream this one up?

I know Russell said that without Scripture Studies, studying the Bible alone, one goes into darkness.
Also, the 08/15/81 Watchtower says reading the Bible exclusively causes people to revert right back to apostate doctrines that commentaries by Christendom's clergy were teaching 100 years ago (presumably Trinity).
Does anyone know of another WT quote, acknowledging the trinity concept in the Bible? -

Letter to all Branches------A Fake?
by miner inmany of you are no doubt familiar with the nov.1, 2001 "letter to all branches" putting forth the the library card defense.
(the letter can be seen at: ) i gave a copy of the letter to a jehovah's witness friend of mine who took it to one of his elders.
the elder said the letter is a fake because: (1) it is not written on official wt letterhead and (2) watchtower does not send such correspondence via the (eeeevil) internet.

Library Card Defense - All aspects
by Lionel_P_Hartley inthis thread is for a general all-inclusive discussion of the library card explanation presented by the wts.
nothing within that context should be considered off-topic.. to get the ball rolling:.
by affiliating with the un as an ngo an organization agrees to support and advance un goals.

I am probably behind most of you in this 'library card' defense discussion, but does anyone know more details about the letter that appears at www.thetruthhurts.freeservers.com/dag.htm ? It appears to be from the Head Librarian of the Dag Hammarskjold Library and seems to pretty effectively knock down the WatchTower's defense point-by-point.
Also, has anyone determined if a "library card" could have been obtained by WTS without associating as an NGO? Perhaps they are viewed as members of the press by virtue of Awake/WatchTower magazines or they could be considered "serious researchers" by the UN? -

What about the money
by miner ini read not long ago that the wts rakes in some big bucks every year from sales of printed materials.
can someone please help me understand who pays for their materials.
in the country where i live, it seems they distribute their literature free of charge.

Dear E-PB,
You're right; literature was not the best word choice...I could be wrong or maybe it varies from country to country (I live in Ukraine), but my Jehovah's Witness friends do not pay for what they distribute and have never mentioned any kind of pressure for contributions. Miner -

I'm not sure if it's the right thing to throw out this question here or not...(MSIL, Hope you don't mind!) I keep seeing references to Jehovah's Witnesses who are still serving time in prison due to their refusal to either be drafted or serve in alternative service. Were these people sentenced prior to the new light or does this continue on in certain countries?

MSIL,
Thanks for sharing your personal experiences here. I'm sorry for you and angry; in light of recent events, it all seems so unnecessary.
However, your story will encourage others with similar experiences and keep the fire going under many of us who, like you, still have family/friends hanging on to the org.
I admire your courage.
