  1. Fast forwarding through violent or sex scenes in movies but watching the rest of it. Either decide that the movie offends your conscience and avoid it entirely, or watch the whole thing properly (i.e. in context - oh but that's right, JWs just chop out the bits they don't like in the Bible too).

  2. Another time a sister came to a cong. BBQ in what seemed like a very short mini skirt. When she turned around though, it was really a pair of shorts that had a flap over the front to make it look like a skirt. I remember she was very pleased with herself, because shorts were okay, minis were not.

  It's like they want desperately to follow the rules and conform, but part of them realises that this isn't compatible with real life. So they find these loopholes to salve their consciences.

  "JW" Says Donor Organs Cause Personality Changes (and other nonsense) on TV!

  4thought.tv asks if organ donations should be compulsory.

  derek house is a jehovahs witness who believes an organ transplant could lead to the recipient having a change of personality.. this was on tv here in the uk this week.i couldn't believe my eyes and ears when i saw this!note the comments - many of them are defending jws saying he can't really be one.

  This is utter rubbish. Correlation is not the same as causation. The WT comments posted by Blondie sound like medieval style "magical thinking", which arose due to ignorance and fear of the unknown - core JW traits. It has been shown that children's vocabulary increases the more cavities they have in their teeth. If we apply WT reasoning, witnesses should therefore feed their kids more candy to be more effective in the door-to-door work. Actually, the correlation is simply because older children have more cavities, and also larger vocabularies.

  I am a psychiatrist and have done my fair share of "consultation liaison" with medical teams. It is well known that ANY major surgical procedure or chronic, life threatening illness can result in depression and/or personality change. Delirium - complete with auditory hallucinations and persecutory delusions can also be caused by many of the anti-rejection drugs, dehydration from surgery, and a multitude of other causes. In the 1960s the most common anti-rejection drug was prednisone which is NOTORIOUS for causing florid psychosis in some people. So I'm not surprised that in the early days of heart transplants, such phenomena were observed. These days the drugs tend to be a little better.

  There is in fact a well-documented syndrome of severe major depression associated with strokes and myocardial infarctions (heart attack). No one knows what the mechanism is, but serotonin levels in the brain apparently do change afterwards. So much so that there are studies giving prophylactic anti-depressants to these people to see if they contribute to quality of life afterwards.

  The point is - yes there ARE psychiatric changes following transplant (and other surgery/medical conditions), but it is impossible to establish cause and effect.

  Why are WTBTS headquarters moving out of Brooklyn?

  aside from the economic incentives, has the wtbts actually said why they are moving the headquarters to warwick, ny?.

  is there any sort of official statement re: reasoning?.

  are they suggesting this is part of the "preparation" for the big a - when nyc will clearly be destroyed, and so jehovah won't have to squint and pick out the jws in brooklyn in order to avoid them when hurling the fireballs..

  I remember one of our conventions held in a football stadium. The management at the stadium had given permission for us Dubs to have our lunch "on the lawn" i.e. the football field. The proviso was that no rubbish was left on the playing field afterwards. These were already the days of B.Y.O packed lunch and I remember several thousand people spreading picnic blankets down to eat.

  On the last day of the convention, the speaker told us how much the stadium management were astounded that no litter had been found on the field over the 3 days of the convention. "Yes, that's right brothers, not a single piece of paper, not one empty can. See how Jehovah's holy spirit helps his people to give a good witness. The management told us they would never have to hire cleaners if all their football spectators were Jehovah's Witnesses."

  Ironic really, given that JWs are not supposed to go to football games.

  The J Dub Culture of Skirt-Wearing

  this is something that has always bothered me.

  as a born-in jw i was raised as a little girl wearing skirts and dresses which is clearly quite normal in terms of gender-appropriate clothing.

  however, the older i grew, the more i realised that all jw women and girls wore skirts to meetings and when out in fs, but would wear trousers in their everyday life.

  I was aged 18-21 during my time as a Dub, and I always wore skirts to meetings. It didn't really bother me until later, when I was out and looked at some of the photos. I dressed like a 40 year-old woman!

  There was another young sister about 16 in the congo and she often turned up to book study in business pants (the dress at book study was always regarded as less formal because it was held in someone's house). People raised eyebrows, but I don't think anything was said because technically there was nothing specific either in the Bible or the WT that said "no pants". I only saw this with reference to Bethel.

  Remember, we are not people, just TOOLS. And when the tool doesn't accomplish what you need it to do - throw it on the scrap heap. Even if you were trying to make a hammer drill a hole. Some people's personalities and talents are just not appreciated in the Borg. If you can't hammer nails in, that's a problem. Never mind that you are a jigsaw and can outdo a hammer any day.
