To be fair, I can only speak from my personal experience. Occasionally, our family was helped out, but only by individuals who happened to notice that we were living in poverty and cared enough to do something about it. That maybe happened a handful of times, but never anything organised by the elders.

Cutting the final ties
by Wolfgirl ini've been doing a lot of reading these past couple of days, including someone's life experience that he wrote about and that was linked to on this board.
found here: http://members.aol.com/smcdownlds/downldfit.html.
anyway, after reading that, the last vestiges of my "programming" have fallen away.

Thanks, guys. :)
I was leaning towards evolution/science anyway, but reading that link pushed me over the edge. :) As for the blood issue, I hadn't decided what I was going to do, and was avoiding thinking about it. Decision made now. :)
And yes, wolves are my favourite animals. I worked with them a lot when I still lived in the US.

Anyway, after reading that, the last vestiges of my "programming" have fallen away. I still hung on a bit to creationism (if you believe in it, fine...everyone is entitled to believe in what they want to), but that's gone now. But the major step for me is this: I cut up my blood card. I was still holding onto it, but the simple truth found in the Bible cleared that last bit up for me.
Today is a big day for me. :)

Did People In The "Truth" Have Better Marriages Than Those In The "World"?
by minimus in"marry only in the lord"...... if you marry outside the "truth", your marriage "will be doomed"...... what was your experience regarding a mutual witness marriage?
was it all that it was cracked up to be???
did you know of others that had a great marriage because theywere witnesses?

My first marriage lasted for 1 year. I kicked my husband out 1 month after our first anniversary. And I agree completely with Jayson.

Did You Know That You Could Be Disfellowshipped For French Kissing?
by minimus ina number of years ago, a body of elders discussed the matter of "french kissing".
they came to the conclusion that this practice of "french kissing" was a disfellowshipping offense on the grounds of "engaging in loose conduct".
one young couple were judicially reproved for their "sin" and the elders felt that since the matter was not widely known, that they would be "privately reproved".

That happened to me too! I had my arm around my husband, and when I got up to go to the bathroom (I was bored), an elder pulled me aside and told me that I had to stop that. He said it was distracting. To whom, I wonder? We sat in the back.

What Do The Americans, Canadians And Australians Think Of The British?
by Englishman intell us, please, we wanna know!.
also can you get your head around the the british isles, the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland and just plain ole england?.
(with apologies to minimus).

This American loves the English. In fact, I married a wonderful Englishman.
I've been to England many times, and it feels like home to me, more than the US ever did. Boring diet? Please...whoever thinks that the English have a boring diet has just been around people who don't know how to cook. My husband cooks for me nearly every night, and it's all delicious.
Anyway, I've never been to the rest of the UK, but I love England and its witty people.

Interesting Tidbits
by Xena inafter reading the thread about posing in the nude, i was suprised to see how many people on here had done that....made me start to wonder what other interesting tidbits (hence the title of this thread) i didn't know about my fellow posters.
so what interesting or unusual thing have you done or been or seen in your life?
posed in the nude?

Posed nude, although not for a magazine or anything. Just for my now-husband, then-boyfriend.
Was stalked twice. One stalker was my ex-husband, during and after our divorce. Once by some weird guy at work.
A mentally disturbed JW repeatedly threatened to rape and kill me. Elders did nothing but tell me to consider the source. I did so, and then filed police reports on him, for which I was looked down upon. Hey, when someone threatens to rape and kill me, and then gets a job across the street from where I work, I'm thinking he has plenty of opportunity.
Up and moved from the US to Hong Kong to live with my now-husband when he got transferred there. Moved from Hong Kong to France.
Oh, and I love going topless now. I was so frightened to show my body when I was a JW, until I started to feel a little bit sexy...when I was on my way out. Now, I go topless all the time, coz the beaches here are all topless at the least. Europeans are so much more comfortable with themselves.
Can't think of anything else really interesting at the moment.

Were You AFRAID Of The Elders???
by minimus insince the elders are always spoken of as being "a refreshment for your souls" and "loving shepherds", did you ever find yourself afraid of them?
-
Wolfgirl
Some of them, yes. And I was always petrified when I was going to get a talking-to. Until the last one when I knew I was going to be DF'd. I didn't care anymore. I just answered their questions very directly, and they said, "You know this means you'll be disfellowshipped, right?" I said, "Yes," and away they went.

Daughter counselled on dating a wordly guy
by minimus inmy daughter recieved this email from one of her witness "friends".
she is counseling my daughter (indirectly) about her choice to date a "worldly" guy.. hey, so, we had a talk recently that was about love & respect in your marriage.
the brother brought out that this was more for us witnesses rather than worldly people, because it seems that even in the truth now marriage has lost it's correct place.

This hits close to home. I was counselled when I was 15 for "dating" a "worldly" guy. It's not like we went anywhere. We just held hands at school and kissed a few times. I felt so bad about it, I was suicidal. I planned it all and only chickened out at the last minute, thank god. I did it again when I was 17. Counselled again. Then married someone who was studying...well, we dated whilst he was studying, and got married a week after he got baptised. Big mistake. Divorced.
Then I met my English man. :D Definitely the least religious person I've ever met. Got disfellowshipped. Lived together for a year before we got married. Celebrating our first anniversary today. Best thing I ever did. :D
