  Hell Exists

  .and it's also known as new jersey.. although we now have a generator to heat our house and run the water, we abandonded ship tonight because of the snow/wind, and we're staying with family.

  my work days run about 14 hours/7 days a week, and then i have school at night two nights a week.. brutal.. it's a nightmare out there.

  still huge trees down all over, all utilities on the ground, and now snow and wind.

  Hang in there -- been there, upstate New York... no power for 3 weeks and trees falling on our houses - totally destroying some.

  I don't fear death, nor God. The latter doesn't exist, and the former is not a choice... so I'm cool with what I cannot control.
  
  The only thing that saddens me, is that those who claim loud and clear that there is such a god will never live learn the truth about his non-existance.

  well it's been about 8 months since my final wake up.

  as some may remember for my intro thread, i panicked and was way too aggressive at first with telling my wife all about this scam we're a part of.

  she freaked, thinking satan had me for sure.

  Yep - that's how long it took me! I was 47 at the time, practically born in the alledged "Truth"... I also had huge issues with the flood & blood (sounds like a rock band)... :D

  Try not to state the lies of the WTS -- present it so that you can ask her what SHE thinks about this or that? Let HER find out and reason on all of it.
  Truth bears no examination - kindly slip that in - then keep placing the cards on the table. Just don't play her turn - let her win by herself.

  Helping people

  what do you say to someone that feels preaching is the best thing to do in helping people because you can save their life in the long run?

  should not waste energy on helping people when hungry, poor because a waste of time and its temporary.

  trying to have something logical and persusive to have my mom see helping people now is a good thing..

  JWs like the saying " Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
  
  However, while this is indeed important, if you just teach the man to fish and not help him right away by giving him a fish, he will die of hunger with the lost knowledge of how to fish! Ironic, no?
  
  By the way - teaching is free. Helping in a practical way has a cost. There is a sense of urgency that some just choose to ignore.

  I agree with sizemik that to call eternal nature or Universe a cop out is indeed purely a dismissive bias. It's a possibility, and deserves at least consideration. I have more a problem with our human intellectual limitations that would assert that there is such a thing as an "initial cause" (while totally ignoring the need for an initial cause for the existance of a creator of the universe). It is also a possibility (and not a new idea).
  Actually, even as a kid I could not understand why theists like my parents had no problem with a god that always existed, while mocking atheists because they couldn't explain a first cause. I was 12 years old when I concluded that this was an immense hypocrisy - or at the least, a double standard.

  So to CA's phrase, " but I see that a bit as a cop out. It avoids the need for an initial cause..." so does the idea of God.

  I'm totally arguing against the winds of wishful thinking here. I must move on to more intellegent debates.
