Prayer? Really? Has no one learned anything from this?
My thoughts are with her, and I really want her case to be a resounding witness to the bad faith of the Watchtower.
But prayer? come on! God could stop pedophilia with a snap of his fingers if he existed.

Massive Prayers Urgently Needed: Candace Conti Court Decision May Be Soon
by Scott77 ini think personally, the judge was wanting to mainly see how the watchtower society would answer them.
he said he would have a decision by the 25th august.
so needless to say, everyone is nervously waiting for the day he decides.

One more thing, if I may Apostatethunder. You say "There are many mysteries in the universe, and humans have always wondered about them."
I encounter this idea multiple times a day: the idea that because we don't know everything, how can we deny the existance of God? I can play along with that. What I do NOT understand, is why deny what we DO know; what evidence we DO have. This is a mystery for me.
The fact that we don't have all the answers is no reason to fill them in with Yahweh, invented by men who had no knowledge of the Universe, at a time where morality was disgusting. We all need to Stop. Think. Read with context... -

Sulla: " Finally: consider the (very remote) possibility that you are not quite as awesome as you think."
This is my constant concern. This is why I fight confirmation bias. I was a christian minister for over 4 decades -- beleive me, it was damn hard to let go. I lost my family for just being coherant with my conscience. In time, the more I know, the more questions I raise. I will never have all the answers, but I try hard to understand the questions the best I can.
How ironic that someone who thinks the Unvierse was created with them in mind would dare hint on me being the conceited one. LOL!
As for morality, the simple fact that we have only recently considered slavery a bad thing proves how far we have come to the Abrahamic god's filthy immorality. Just like all the other myths, he ended up proven man-made with human bad traits. (This goes for Jesus who fully supports the Law in Matt. 5.) -

" Would you say most of what we know about science, evolution, math, history, etc., etc., was learned from written material? Some from lecture--but that also applies to Christian theism."
My friend Binadub, may I respectfully point out the depth of logical fallacies that are in this comment?
As per my "Jack & the Beanstalk" analogy, that too was written. It's not what is claimed in written form that counts - it's the evidence that corroborates it! The Bible simply states extraordinary things, without even basic ordinary evidence to back it up. Science on the other hand is not Knowledge - it's the exploration and pusuit of knowledge. What is written is done after much debate, peer review, and experimentation.
I wonder why there can be any confusion on this? -

Apostatethunder: "Believing in God or not is a personal decision, that should be respected."It's one thing to respect a personal belief. It's another to question it.
So. as much as I respect personal beliefs, I am not bound to respect any religion, given it's lack of base in reason and logic. I have the right to hate organized religion, and I do.
Also, being "Spiritual" is only a philosophical concept. In that sense, I'm a spiritual atheist.
______ Really? THere are people who deny that the Christian God has reference in any other post-Biblical Scriptures?? I'm floored.
______Sulla - you say "Ok, suppose for a second that the experience of the transcendent precedes the written record of it."
Am I not being clear? Of course any thought precedes written record. How does that make the Bible any more coherent with logic and reason?
I contend that the spiritual and moral matters in the Bible are no more relevant than its medical, scientific mumbo jumbo. I think my OP is very clear.
______I notice the religious are purposely ignoring my argument on confirmation bias... hmmm... an answer in the silence?

" As per one of my notes, my biggest fear is my, our, natural tendency for confirmation bias. And my biggest frustration is that so many don't even acknowledge they have it -- not mentioning those who don't even know what it is. Did I say frustrating? But why should I care? After all, even if one wants to believe in fairies and chocolate covered mountains, who the hell am I to deny them their "truth?" Who cares what quest I have, how dare I intrude and shove my perspective of reality in their face? Right?
Of course, it would be ridiculous to claim as a fact that God doesn't exist. Even as a convinced atheist I would never say that.
However - there is strong evidence that the Abrahamic God of the three main religions, does not exist. Why? Because of the written scriptures from where his existence originates. Accurate scientific and archeological knowledge has chipped away to the so-called truths of the Bible. It's validity on the very origins of life, the flood*, the miracles that conveniently have never happened in our recorded times, the absurd and cruel morality of the Mosaic Law that condones genocide, slavery, and the stoning of almost anyone, even a rebellious teen (ack!), etc...Bottom line, the Bible is a great book - but not trustworthy as Truth as it lacks basic logic and true morality. Hence, the biblical claims that there is such a God makes his existence very improbable.
Granted, nobody can "choose" to believe one way or another. However, we can "choose" our sources. Consequently, what we believe can then be influenced by the choice of our sources. I find it sad that such a huge chunk of the world's demography find it normal to trust the Bible. Ironically, NOBODY would trust scientific or medical books that are 2,000 years old. Anyone would find that preposterous.
Personally, I have already dismissed the Abrahamic god as a possibility.
* Concerning tales like the flood and other stories, some say we shouldn't take the Bible literally, like some religions do in pure denial of hard evidence (ex. JW). I agree. But then why take the existence of an all-knowing, all-powerful deity literally? How does that make any more sense? Not take the stories literally, except for the main character. Where's the logic there? It's like saying that it's ridiculous to take "Jack and the Beanstalk" literally, as a true story -- but guess what? The giant REALLY exists on a cloud above!
Logic fails in this world, still crippled with references and superstitions of old. And I would like to encourage those who leave the JWs for another religion to analyse why they do so, in flagrant contridiction with logic. It it because they got used to the security blanket of faith? I think yes in most cases..."

Charlie, you obviously don't know Atheists, nor the logic and reason they hold on to. Please read my comment above. -

To Any Jehovah's Witness Reading This---Please Think About Getting Out!
by minimus ini sympathize with you.
you may feel there's no where to go.
you might worry that you could lose all your friends and family.. you might believe it's better than the other religions and you should just "wait" on jehovah/the organization.. you might have doubts but you might feel a spiritual connection.. all i can suggest to you is to please think about your life.

I was sooo sure of myself when a JW. I pionneered every time I had the opportunity, which was often. My only ''fault'' was that I studied my Bible in depth - and I mean DEPTH!
It was a battle with good morals and logic that killed the Bible for me -- way before I looked to Science or apostate litterature.
Yep - if you claim to know your Bible, and are still a Christian, I state with no ambiguity that you are fooling yourself with confirmation bias.
Bottom line, the WTBTS Organization is founded on fairy tales - and that makes them the ''bad guy'' to judge others and encourage ostracism to those who dare think.
I do NOT unerstand those who leave the Organization to go play in another mud pond of religious delusion. Get a life, a reason, and read with context.
The Truth will set you free indeed.

My nine grievances against the Society from BEFORE I had ever visited a single apostate website...

Great thread cedars.
I became an atheist years before looking towards science and exJW material. It was the Bible itself that self districted before my eyes with it's lack of logic. When I did turn elsewhere, I found a mountain of evidence against both the Bible and the Organization.
There is no more doubt in my mind we evolved - and there IS evidence against evolution in the Bible: if Adam didn't exist, the whole ransom sacrifice is moot. No Adam, and the whole Bible and it's main message crumbles to oblivion.
