Loubelle I wish I was in SA to give you a big hug and help you through this period. keep fighting even if death is staring you in the face - you may not believe me but according to what I have learned it is from this that humans get their wisdom, strength and courage.

Are Western values compatible with Christian values?
by garyneal ini was going to say judaism, christianity, and islam but since i know little of judaism and islam so i decided to stick primarily with christianity.
i have found myself thinking that the values preached in the bible are not compatible with western (ie american) values.
however, it all seems to depend on who you really talk to and what he or she believes.. for example, the jehovah's witnesses preach a lot about how women are suppose to be submissive to men and yet at the same time preach how this does not mean that women are suppose to be seen as inferior to men.

Hi Gary, I mainly know Christian values through Jehovahs witnesses and the point at which these clash with the western value of becoming so financially independent as to be able to choose one's life makes me see how damaging the witness stand against this particular western value is.

My Final Goodbye
by Lady Lee ini want to start by saying i will not participate in discussion here about my resignation as a moderator at jwn.. simon please consider this as my resignation from that position.. i have been posting on this board for almost 12 years.
i know some of you a lot, others a little and some not very well at all.
i have remained here for those of you who have needed support as you make the transition out of the wts, who needed someone to listen to your experiences of abuse at the hands of jehovah's witnesses, and to both laugh and cry with you as you progress out of the watchtower society.. we know that we have all experienced the cruelty of abuse of one kind or another.

cedar's stated aim was to give a voice to the silent majority (on jwsurvey) - instead he seems to have found a vociferous minority and given them an even stronger voice. I'm not trying to judge him negatively but still trying to absorb how much power he wielded on JWN.
edit: he did a lot of good work with Candace Conti but he became really possessive and would not allow any kind of discussion that in his small mind he considered would negatively impact his aim to publicise only postive things about it. Trouble is when an individual shuts down discussion that tries to look at different angles we are all impoverished.

How to Take Down the AAWA! (For those that have been hurt by that org)
by HintOfLime in(if you're tired of aawa threads, please be aware, this is an aawa thread.).
sadly - there are people who have been negatively affected by the aawa, and like other organizations, the aawa made protecting it's name and reputation a priority over helping and protecting the people it should have been trying to help.
like other organizations, they won't discuss the issues publicly with the community, insisting instead on discussions behind closed doors and "getting the names" of people expressing concerns.. .

I don't like the idea of making war on AAWA even if you meant it as a sarcasm, hintoflime, because AAWA is made up of people like us - bruised and battered by WT policies on shunning, their stand against higher education, mishandling of spousal abuse and child abuse and blood. lets cut AAWA a little slack.
At the same time I agree with you that there is a need for a clearly defined privacy policy to protect grassroots members of AAWA.

ANONYMITY (Is it really possible on the Internet?)
by Terry ini should begin by screaming the word: no!.
keeping secret your identity while posting in a public forum is like removing your pubic hair with a blowtorch.
which is to say, theoretically possible but not at all feasible!.

replying to your OP Terry, I don't think JWs are that interested in us. We can enjoy a certain amount of freedom on the internet - just be careful. A degree of anonymity is poss

Interested in Any Sort of Activism-This Book May Be Useful to You
by Band on the Run ini was reliving my student radical days my reading a book that was first published in the 1970s.
it is considered a classic organizing text.
hillary clinton and barack obama were heavily influenced by this book.

Constructive feedback for AAWA leadership (IMHO)
by besty in1 - reconsider your existence - there might be a reason why the most effective resources to date have been solo efforts.
2 - recognize that even well-intentioned organizations will firstly seek self-preservation.
3 - be aware that egos and emotional stupidity have torn apart much grander edifices than aawa.

I hope that AAWA can look back at this situation as a trial run. I'm glad they are taking feedback on board (as Tylinbrando has said). Personally I would like to see this venture succeed even if the main outcome is that it enables people to feel that they are accomplishing something constructive with their energies.
somebody else, Brinjen I think, made an excellent suggestion, that rather than using facebook, AAWA could start their own discussion forum. This could be a place to thrash out thorny issues and discuss how best to raise awareness re watchtower abuses in a more radical way than at present.
I hope AAWA are considering a name change. I think JWactivists is a great name. Or even Action Against Watchtower Abuses
