most jw women who have separated from their abusive husbands become free to re-marry fairly quickly as more often than not the husband does not remain a witness but leaves and quite quickly takes up with someone else. The jw woman then divorces him and can choose to re-marry if she wishes. However most don't remarry but quietly bring up their children if they have any (and they usually do), and are supported by the congregation.

"Extreme physical abuse" only grounds for separation, NOT divorce.
by cedars inforgive me if i'm a bit slow with the title to this thread.
the true absurdity of the cult that robbed me of my intellect for so long is still beginning to dawn on me.. i'm doing more research into domestic violence as part of a response to the notorious "wife beating" article in the feb 2012 watchtower.. i was shocked to find a question from readers in the w75 5/1 p286-288 which basically said that a battered wife would not be scripturally free to divorce her husband.
my first reaction was that this stance must have changed since 1975, but then i dipped into my own memory from serving as an elder, and of course, adultery (including porneia) is given as the only scriptural grounds for divorce down to this day.. please can somebody correct me if i'm wrong, preferably with a reference?

Read S. Hassan's Book: Do JW's really fit the cult mold?
by simon17 infirst time i got a chance to read his book, "combatting cult mind control" and was interested to see if jw's fell into the cult mold.
my opinion after carefully reading and having left the witnesses after almost 30 years is... no, they don't.
however, i would add that they wish they were but are simply too big and unwieldy to really pull it off.

I agree with you simon (re your opening post).
Also the word cult does not have the same associations here as it does in the US imo. And if you say Jehovahs witnesses are a dangerous cult you are likely to be disbelieved in the UK.
But steve's book is great for people who are already doubting because it enables one to take a more objective view of their beliefs and help to build resistance to indoctrination.

nice article - enjoyed reading that
I don't know about schizophrenia but there is a trend here in the uk amongst family doctors to treat depressed patients holistically. Medications are adjusted to suit the patient and cognitive behavioural therapy is prescribed alongside. An holistic family doctor recommended to a friend of mine that she take her antidepressants every other day and said that another of her patients takes hers every four days - they are told that if their mood drops to take their tablets more often until the mood passes and then go back to taking them every other day/every four days respectively. These patients had been very sensitive to their tablets and had been experiencing horrible side effects when they took their tablets every day. Also they are closely monitored by their doctor who is willing to put herself out to see them more often than usual.

Are We in Danger of Religious Beliefs?
by mankkeli inthis is taken from the wt 2010, 9/1.
are we in danger?.
is it not an exaggeration to say that all of us are in danger of being deceived with regard to our religious beliefs?

(that is funny trueblue)
I used this reasoning below a lot in the ministry
You have nothing to fear from examining your beliefs in this way. In fact, the Bible encourages you to “make sure of all things” before accepting them as true. (1 Thessalonians 5:21) Toward the end of the first century C.E., the apostle John urged his fellow Christians: “Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression, but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God.” (1 John 4:1) Yes, even though a certain religious teaching seems to be “inspired”—or to come from God—it is still the course of wisdom to examine the Scriptures to make sure before accepting it as true.—John 8:31, 32.
now Jehovahs witnesses have to apply this to their own organisation. Would you do this mankkeli?

Returning to God - For those with minds of Reason
by mankkeli inthis was taken from a watchtower study article and without doubt, i am definitely sure it will be beneficial for the majority here: now take your spoon and approach the table, the food is ready.. .
returning to god.
13 those who see themselves in the position of the prodigal son, however, need not remain in this wretched state.

LITS - I must say those quotes are awful, poor outlaw and ray. Disclaimer - I had not seen those particular ones when I decided to defend Mankelli. Most of othe ones I saw were after he had lost his temper - so I took them in that light.
edit: hastily backing away.
Mank you are incorrigable. What do you hope to get out of it? apart from getting innocent people into trouble

Are the GB/their suck-ups doing it on purpose as some have intimated?
by punkofnice inwe've all see the disgusting statements the gb are unleashing on the jdubs by way of their rags.
usually the 'in house' watchtower where we've seen 'mentally diseased apostates' and 'jehu' slaughtering 'apostates'.. .
then we see a battered wife staying with her husband (if the story can be believed), for 17 years before 'steve' gets assimilated into the borg.. .

Soft_gentle – I was wondering how the JWs would see the Selma (Homer’s SIL?), story. Perhaps it was sloppy writing? Then they translated it differently in at least a couple of other languages….Steve was just ‘angry’. I wonder why they did that!?!?
Most jws have not received their copy yet so it is difficult to assess their reaction but will keep my eyes and ears open and report back.
I didn't get the Homer's SIL ref

I have been pondering this issue myself punkofnice. My own feeling is that the GB are addressing what is actually happening within congregations. The mentally diseased watchtower is designed to protect JWs from apostates because I think that nowadays every family has at least one apostate/active fader in it. I think practically all witnesses in the West are touched by some form of rebellion within their own family and close friends. And then of course there is the internet.
Regarding Selma who was struck by Steve - My view is that Jehovahs witnesses as an organisation is very active in dealing with issues of domestic violence and that they come across it a lot in the ministry. I think this needs to be considered when addressing why the GB has printed this example.
locally in London amongst Jehovahs witnesses battered women are helped and supported to leave their violent husbands and vice versa. This has happened on a number of occasions.
Plus active jehovahs witnessses would supply a different context for reading this article and most would not read into it that the GB are asking battered women to stay with their violent partners.
edit: the GB are unconcerned about how they are viewed in the outside world. Also If met someone like Selma I would prioritse to direct her to seek the support of a women's refuge instead of prioritising her focusing on continuing her study. But being inactive I no longer go door to door.
