i dont plan to actually start celebrating xmas, etc. just to rebel. lol, too much effort. but otoh, i dont intend to deliberately snub people anymore, eg i think ill go to the office party this year. problem is i dont know jack about what youre expected to do and its the kind of question i cant ask anywhere else so suggestions appreciated.
who would u normally be expected to get presents for in your office?
do u deliver them at the office party? at any time following the holidays?
how big a gift is considered appropriate?
thx

for all of you that missed today's special talk, here are the highlights.... blah blah blah blah blah, etc.
yeah, thats just because i missed the reference... i think there was one and im sure it was really said. it just seems an isolated sentiment. look up stuff on the telomeres and (very recently) a gene called the 'chisel of life' - some fascinating stuff if you want to learn more...

> I'd like to meet a single scientist who believes she/he can end death! Scientists try to understand life
well, there actually has been a lot of research on this of late. some interesting stuff. there was a quote from someone scientific saying that 'he believed that our generation could be the first to live forever' - i doubt that most scientists are quite _that_ optimistic but im sure there that the possibility is not considered an absolutely wild idea.
more to the point of scientific content, our speaker, when discussing the origin of imperfection from one man, mentioned the Human Genome project as verifiying man's common ancestry (prolly not from the outline). that hurt. dont bring the human genome project into this please, i was thinking. it says far more than that and its insulting to have it boiled down to one sentence in support of Genesis.

brief overview of special talk:
runner-up to memorial next week. reviewed need for ransom, science hopes to end death but is unable. jehovah promised ransom in genesis and hope continues thru OT, fulfilled in Jesus, a 'corresponding ransom.' need to follow jesus, not simply believe unto the lord and be saved for all time.
nothing very unusual, geared towards new ones.

it is generally acknowledged, and confirmed by experience, that there is a significant gender imbalance in the organisation.. there are considerably more sisters than there are brothers.
that's great for the brothers, because a lot of the poor jw lasses get so desperate that even the most dorky of brothers can take his pick.. but why is there this imbalance?.
it's true that birth rates show slightly more females being born than males (mother nature's way of safeguarding the future?
i agree. this didnt seem that hard to explain to me. women are easier to contact in house-to-house. in japan women stay at home far more than men due to the culture there and naturally the ratio is way higher there than north america, something like 4-to-1, 5-to-1 when i just counted roughly last time i was there.

this question is specifically asked of jw-apologists, but anyone's response is greatly appreciated.. is all evil in the world the result of humankind's sin?.
the watchtower teaches that the earth is old (in agreement with science), but that humankind is young (6,000 years as of 1975).
since they wish to have an old earth however, it is necessary to say that each day of creation is longer than an actual day- various figures are given i believe.. i believe i am correct in saying that the logical conclusion must be that animals existed for a long time prior to the events in the garden of eden and the sinning of human beings.
You will find very little written about this in recent publications. In fact, when the new Isaiah book was released last year, the first thing i wanted to see was the explanation for Is.11 with the animals lying down together. I was hoping that they would back off from a literal interpretation. And most of the explanation was _not_ literal. then this paragraph at the end. Judge for yourself:

In that restored Paradise, will Isaiah's prophecy have a further, perhaps literal, fulfillment? It seems reasonable to think so. The prophecy gives to all who will live under the Messiah's rule the same assurance that it gave to the returning Israelites; they and their children will not feel threatened by harm from any source--human or animal. Under the Messiah's Kingdom rule, all earth's inhabitants will enjoy peaceful conditions like those that Adam and Eve enjoyed in Eden. Of course, the Scriptures do not reveal every detail of what life was like in Eden--or of what it will be like in Paradise. We can be confident, thought, that under the wise and loving rule of the King Jesus Christ, everything will be just as it should be.

I think that could mean anything...

is there any denial that at 1 kings 7:23, the value of pi is ascertained as 3.000?.
and where does this leave the idea that the bible is inspired in every word, jot, and tittle by god?
just wondering.. any takers?.
I, on the other hand, will put far too fine a point on it and say that pi is not an irrational number, it is a transcendental number. :)

i agree that there could be other ways of constructing the bowl in question to make the measurements come out right but it doesnt seem very important to me. the scripture is not about math, its just a measurement. its not predicting that a bowl of 10 cubits diam. will have a circumference of 30. theyre just measuring the thing and saying roughly how big it was. to me, it doesnt say anything about the hebrew's math abilities (or biblical inspiration) one way or another.
the theory about the hebrew letters equaling numbers is right up there with the bible code guy tho.
