an elder came to visit last night, i had hoped that he came to wish me a happy birthday (im 41 today!
) but no such luck.. he actually came to invite me to the memorial, the first official visit by an elder i have had for many, many years.. we talked about general issues at first, how i felt very angry at the way the society lied and continues to lie to protect its butt.. then happened one of those wonderful moments when you see someone do a double take, the issue of deception and hypocrisy came up and of course i had to mention the un.
at this point i assumed that the elder had heard all about the un debacle.. me: so, tell me honestly, how did you feel when you first found out that the society were a registered supporter on the united nations?.
Next thing you know, the Watchtower will be more reliable than the bible, although that has already been done in a way. They say how they interpret the bible is END OF STORY. I find it quite saddening.

sunday, the 24th, will be my mother's birthday.
had she lived, she would have been 95. she was 44 when i was born.
she died in july 1966, when i was 15. she would have turned over in her grave had she known that i had ever been a jw.. her first contact with the jws was when i was still in the womb.

today, while on the phone with my jw mother, she drops the, by the way do you want to come to the memorial thing for the first time in i don't know how many years.
i was kind of taken aback and said that i would think about it.
obviously, i have no intention of going, but should i just say nothing, say no, or just say i don't agree with the jw doctrine at all and to attend would be hypocritical of me?
This is what I would do:
Unles you WANT to go, respectfully decline, perhaps you already have "previous" arrangements. As far as giving your son the bible etc... I would allow that as well. You honestly think it will make a difference to your son? Tell him later what rubbish JW's are, but to go ahead and "humor" grandmother. No need to create bad blood or upset her.

i've been thinking about all the recent incidents involving those in the wt and those who no longer associate with it...it seems to me that the bryants were subject to another form of self destructive behavior that the flock brings upon itself.
not accepting blood, shunning, no transplants, living/worshipping among pedophiles, isolating the young from education, disrespecting women and thinking less of them in the congo, etc...are all forms of abberant/self destructive ways of life.
ways of life that are not singular in thier effect, but have multiplicitous repercussions.
Valis -- You are correct in what you say. Being a JW messes up your mind in so many ways, it is difficult to even know where to start with their control issues.
Perhaps on a Global scale, all religions control the "masses." But for a so called Christian religion to dictate to it's member's lives what they can and cannot do is another. Take into account, regardless if you break the rules on a grand scale (not saving your child because of a blood issue, not serving your country even with clerical duty when drafted and being thrown in jail as a result) there are other issues as well.
1. Being an “alien as a child,” not being allowed to participate in after school activities such as sports or even being friends with non-JW children.
2.Being warned for as much as having a poster of a famous person due to idol worship.
3.Control of what type of music is listened to. Even if the lyrics are acceptable, the “beat” is not acceptable.
4.Not having a beard.
5.Men can only have short hair and they cannot pierce their ears.
6.Woman are advised to have only 1 set of earrings.
7.Television is warned to be an evil home wrecker.
8.If you don’t go to all of the meetings and participate in the door-to-door work you are considered unworthy and inferior.
9.Any type of independent attitude is strictly frowned upon, you must believe all you are told, even to the point of shunning you if you do not comply.
10.Oral sex even when you are married.
11.And the list goes on and on and on.
It is simple things such as these that can play with peoples minds. Take away a person’s freedom and you leave them a stripped drone, not capable of thinking for themselves. Saddens me.
