Interesting article, seems to go hand in hand with the RTS, Religious Traumatic Stress, thread a while back. Isn't it interesting though, how the WTBTS always says something to the effect of "Because God is Love, he will destroy untold billions of people who don't fear and worship according to requirements." or one of my favorite from the old song book "God is Love and therefore bids us persecutions to endure"...that one never made any sense to me!

Study: Belief in an angry God associated with variety of mental illnesses
by sizemik inhardly surprising to most ... but it's interesting to have a study confirm it.. people who believe in an angry, punishing god are much more likely to suffer from a variety of mental illnesses, a scientific study published in the april edition of journal of religion & health finds.. the study, conducted by marymount manhattan college assistant psychology professor nava silton, used data from the 2010 baylor religion survey of us adults to examine the links between beliefs and anxiety disorders like social dysfunction, paranoia, obsession and compulsion.. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/04/17/study-belief-in-an-angry-god-associated-with-variety-of-mental-illnesses/.

Having children is bad
by dissonance_resolved inwent to the weeknight meeting this week for the first time in a long while.
the study was all about how having children was ill-advised in this time of the end- the comments dwelled on what a burden children are, how you can spend more time in the ministry without children, and look what they did in jerusalem- they cannabilized their own children!
it's going to be so horrible to watch our children suffer during the great tribulation!

JW 'Scriptural Divorce' -v- Muslim 'Sharia Divorce'
by Joe Grundy ini just read this bbc article about sharia divorce in cases of domestic violence:.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22044724.
the issues raised seemed very similar to me to what jws teach about 'scriptural divorce' in these circumstances.. misogynistic (of course), dangerous and despicable..

Pity that the women don't learn martial arts and beat the hell out of these awful men, or do like a group of women in South America did years ago and form a posse that beat up nasty husbands for the women they cheated on or abused. The South American group would satisify some of the muslim requirements for modesty, as the posse members kept themselves hooded and disguised...

Is the WTBTS Responsible for What Attendees Do After an Assembly?
by PaintedToeNail inthis is in response to jim tx's comment on another thread.
the wtbts claims that the organizers of events such as a congregation picnic or a party are responsible for what the attendees do after the event has ended.
example: if several people meet and engage in 'fornication' afterwards, the organizer is culpable.

I agree, how is it possible for a host to be responsible for what other do AFTER leaving an event? The exceptions being where alcohol or drugs were partaken in and causing a longer lasting effect on the attendees. It never made sense that WTBTS could have very large gatherings and be absolved of responsibility of the attendees, yet they held other hosts responsible for what happened after their events. Double standard.
Blondie-Thanks for the references!

There was a Watchtower article which talked about large weddings, which wasn't a good thing to do. You were supposed to have a 'wedding director' to make sure that no one over imbibed, that the music wasn't too loud and so forth. There were articles in the 1980's that discussed how JW's shouldn't have costume parties as it encouraged people to behave licensentiously.
As Jim stated, it was often brought out that large gatherings were verbotten, as you couldn't guarantee what people were doing during and after. Look at all the JW illustrations that feature gatherings, only a small few are there, the women dressed in dresses, the guys in dress slacks and someone seems to always be playing a guitar...
Sorry, I just realized that I posted this thread under the wrong topic, sorry!

I've seen some who party hardy while at the lodgings, getting totally wasted.
Should the WTBTS hold large assemblies? Can they be SURE no one is engaged in heavy petting or fornication after the sessions? Could some come together and imbibe in alcohol or illicit drug use? Are they sure that all attendees are engaged in WHOLESOME activity after the sessions? Should the WTBTS be reproved or disfellowshipped for not obeying themselves?

Congregation had to relocate Memorial...thanks to me
by Shepherd Book inso, the two local congregations were planning to hold their memorial together at 7:30 at the local community center, but they had to make a last-minute change to their own hall, and i'm pretty sure it was because of me.. let me explain.... at work on monday afternoon, a co-worker returned from her lunchbreak and showed me the memorial invitation that was waiitng in her door when she went home for lunch.
i noticed the sticker on the back indicated the memorial was being held, not at the local hall, but at the community center.
from a past (non-jw) event i attended there, i knew they didn't allow alcohol (unless you pay for security guards), so i wrote to the center's coordinator:.

How many times has the WTBTS told people to 'count the cost', giving the example of someone wanting to build something and coming up short in the middle of it all and look like a fool when they couldn't finish what they started? This is an example of the local elders NOT checking everything out and getting caught. If they had checked everything out, and knew about the alcohol ban, they then exempted themselves from the ban's application.
The other church uses fake wine, and remain in compliance, the building managers could not overlook the fact that the ban needs to be enforced fairly. Perhaps the designated security for the building couldn't be on hand because of previous engagements.
