http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/prince_philip_movement sometimes very unsusual things happen.
after reading and posting on whether jesus is god thread here recently, i visited wikipedia's reference desk for humanities.
there was a discussion topic on humans worshipped as gods.
My ex-husband was a teacher. Once he confiscated a book from a teenager. The book was entitled "A History of the End of the World."
There was a chapter about a cargo cult, perhaps in Malaysia.
The natives were fascinated at the fact that the white people on the island did no work, but were better provided for than anyone else because ships full of provisions arrived for them regularly. One islander figured out their "secret," which was that they sat at desks all day and wrote on pieces of paper. So the natives started sitting, writing illiterate scrawl for most of the day, but with no results. So they did things like putting a vase of flowers on their desk like the white folks did. Nothing worked. Finally, a native walked into the office of an official and declared that they deserved to know "the secret" because they had been Christians for 20 or so years.

interesting meeting today.the do had the last talk and he mentioned a couple of things i have not heard before :.
1) the new lighter magazines are designed in a way to attract people to our website .
2)the ministry will change to incoprorate preacing in town centres and and with stands as in manhattan and certain brothers will be allocated to do this .so it is done now in a big scale ,organised.. 3)the qr codes at the back of the magazines are there for smart phone users to guide them directly to jw.org ,unlike bad old internet via laptops and pc's that you have to look for the website on google and sometimes end up in enemy websites that look like our website but are spreading lies about jw's (he said exactly that!
They have a lot to overcome. Almost everyone on this board has already been a JW. We're just the tip of the iceberg.
Several years ago, a JW lady knocked on our door. My daughter told her directly, "Oh, I've already been a Jehovah's witness." To our surprise, this forthright statement only made her curious, not disgusted. She actually came back, but we were going somewhere and didn't have time to spend with her. Shortly after that, we moved to another state.
Recently, two JW's came to our front door. I told them that I was an apostate. They did not flinch, but the lady in front kept blathering about "the solution." She said, "You're not disfellowshipped, are you?" As far as I know, I was not formally disfellowshipped, so I told her this. The lady with her seemed somewhat uncomfortable, but said nothing.
Almost everybody knows a JW -- from work or from family mostly. Knowing a JW personally is usually all it takes to get people disinterested in their "message," that you cannot have any fun, and the world is on the verge of a cataclysm in which Jehovah will make Hitler look like a little old lady Sunday school teacher.

http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/15/how-californias-new-online-education-pilot-will-end-college-as-we-know-it/.
-while faculty worry about the quality of online courses, the truth is that our education system, primarily designed to test rote memorization, is built to scale and be independent of teacher interaction.
a review of research by the department of education in 2009 found that "students who took all or part of their class online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through traditional face-to-face instruction.".
Online study is great, but I prefer CD's. The only way I can learn certain things, such as math, is to be able to have everything repeated about a million times (slight exaggeration). Some concepts are more easily remembered than others. Watching the process on screen over and over again is the only way I can grasp some concepts.

did anyone watch the nbc program "rock center" last night?
it dealt with scientology defectors and the stories, (shunning, tax-exempte etc) sounded very much like the watchtower/jehovah witnesses!.
i sat with my family...and there was dead silence throughout the report.
Cults are all the same. It is not just Scienology that has similarities to the JW's; there are many others.
We are free, and allow ourselves to be duped into slavery. So sad.

does anyone ever feel this way when they see older family members (parents, grandparents etc) growing old or experiencing failing health?.
do you ever feel that you should be able to somehow keep them alive - and feel frustrated and hopeless that you can't?.
cedars.
It is so true. I was lucky enough to have a grandmother until I was 54. She was 90 when she died, and in full control of her faculties, and in pretty good shape physically (able to walk independently, cook, read and write, etc.). She was such a sweet, uncomplicated, simple and contented soul. Everyone loved her.
Now that I'm getting along in years (I'm 65), I sometimes think death has to come because we get to the point in life that the world is so baffling that we don't fit in anywhere. I am lucky that I am somewhat computer-literate and open-minded. But even I have difficulty with the amorality of people in this age. It sickens me to see people with ugly tattoos all over their bodies and/or punched full of holes (piercings) and people wearing their pants practically at their knees. They look as if they have no self-respect, at least to me.
I understand that accepting what is gives one more peace than raging and railing against it. What a drag it is getting old!

once i was little boy in fort worth, texas living with my maw maw and paw paw and mommy.. then, i was an 18 year old 6'4'' skinny 165lb religious nut being dipped in a baptismal during a local assembly.. suddenly, i was 20 and listening to a jail cell door clang behind me as a conscientious objector.. wow!
23 years old and put on parole until my 6 years sentence was ended!
i got married to a nice jw girl and had 3 kids!.
Happy belated birthday, Terry!
so i have another visit from the elder this week.
this time they want to speak with my wife, still a believer and myself.
i think they want to know my position about my children attending the meetings and some other things.. while preparing myself for it i though of a challenge for the elders and my wife.
Good for you, jonno! I attended an elders' "meeting" many years ago. Their ignorant bullying and games with "good cop-bad cop" and twisting logic showed me once and for all that they were pathetic, sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigots (to quote someone in the movie "9 to 5").
From that day forward, I have been happy and free, learned to make my own judgments and choices without their "guidance" and furthered my education.

so the local jc decided to df my girlfriend because of basically premarital sex.. she confessed few weeks back to the elders, and the judicial system had its wheels rolling.. they confronted her today, and eventually came to the conclusion described above.. .
she told them that she regretted our sexual acts, and that we wouldn't perform that kind of actions before we're married.. they talked with her about getting married etc.
a week before the jc.. now the reason they decided to df her was not the sexual acts itself, nor the lack of regret,.
Deep down, she may really want to be DF'd. Wouldn't you want out of that robot funny farm?
Welcome her to freedom, the ability to choose for herself and to discern right and wrong for herself.
We all congratulate her for getting on the wrong side of the elders, while trying not to or at least appearing to try not to.
Regards,
SandraC
nice to meet you all.
long time lurker, but now i can get my twopenneth in.. a brief history.. born into the religion, but it never really took hold - thankful for an easily bored mind and strong, worldly grandparents.. never very interested - dragged from meeting to field service.
in the teenage years i wanted university and my parents want a pioneer.
Hello, Braehead.
You mentioned George Orwell's "1984." In fact, there is a book by ex-JW's comparing the world of Orwell's book to JW's. It's called "The Orwellian World of Jehovah's Witnesses," and it's written by Gary and Heather Botting.
