  i have small children.

  i was raised a witness, so i never celebrated holidays.

  now, i don't go to meetings, don't agree that the watchtower is jehovahs sole channel of communication.

  I can relate to that! that type of mentality runs in my family too. In fact , as much as I hate to admit it, some of that probably rubbed off on me too.

  I sure hope my kids don't get that mentality. Thats something I thought of doing, but not with gifts. Probably have them spend some time volunteering when they get bigger in an elderly home, etc. So that they know it is important to care for others.

  Favre was just feeling guilty about the pack having such a lead in the NFL. I don't think they will allow any more of this nonsense though. Its a good thing Mike Sherman held himself back from opening a can of whupa## on ol Sapp. He would have looked pretty bad gettin kicked by a coach, LOL

  Discussion With My Dad...Ended Badly.

  some of you may know that my parents were expected for "dinner" on thanksgiving day.

  well i really don't think its going to happen now.

  i called my dad last night becuase my mother, now visiting my kids in south texas and bringing them here to see me, said they had "stuff to do on thursday".

  Valis, This probably won't be much help, but I would always make it very clear to your parents, that despite your differences, you would greatly appreciate a visit from them anyway, at any time. As long as they understand that its them, not you that is breaking off the communication, then you have done everything you can.

  Blondie, I wasn't going to take any bets on that game. I just don't understand how a team can be said to have "trouble" playing on certain fields. Makes no sense to me. Minnesota, Tampa bay, Dallas. I don't get it. Why can't they adapt to the conditions?

  No, I don't. Both of my parents don't. and also, my wife was raised a witness and no one on her side celebrates that I know of.

  You did not mention if you had kids. If you do, do they consider you as celebrating the holidays?

  I suppose many people figure thats what all the holidays are about, just good times together.

  jgnat, That was a great story about the camping. I try to provide those memories for my kids too. We did the camping thing about 1/2 hour from our house, and the kids had a blast! I think its all about we, as parents establishing a close relationship with our kids. Not our kids caring for us beecause we put up lights and trees and they get stuff. I trhink they will understand we still love them. Its experiences like the one you provided that will provide the lasting great memories from our kids.

  safe4kids, I guess I will try to let my guard down a bit with them as they get older, allowing them to see me do some "fumbling"

  Jesus Christ, I realize that some people had control of me for a while. O.K. , I can deal with that. But as of right now, not celebrating is a decision that I made for myself. Im not worried about what others think.

  Falsifiability

  i pose this challenge to believers: what would it take for you to stop believing in god?.

  this is an interesting challenge.

  well, it may sound paradoxical, but in order for any claim to be true, it must be falsifiable.

  How do you picture God showing himself ? Would it take a huge being on a cloud that descends down upon the entire earth, everyone quaking in their boots? What if an average looking man did some miracles? What if the oceans parted? What would it take?

  I don't know of anything that would make me not believe in God anymore. I think the only other alternative would be to accept that we will grow old and die. Nothing after that. I choose to believe that in there is an afterlife, and that it could be so much better than this one.
