The thing about the growth of the Spanish congregations in the US is it's tied to undocumented immigrants. I actually know a local elder(well, used to be) who owns a roofing business in town. He's in the Spanish congregation. Damn near all his employees were undocumented JW workers. A couple of his jobsites were raided by the feds a couple years back. He was arrested for tax evasion and knowingly employeeing undocumented workers. He was disfellowshipped for "not obeying the law of the land". Kind of funny since all his employees were local witnesses and everyone knew he paid them under the table. He was even praised, before he was arrested, around here for putting so many brothers to work. Ah, the politics. Got to love it. He's been reinstated, but his business is much smaller these days due to having to do everything "by the book".

Did you ever run into brothers who didn't like "straightforward" talks?
by toto555 inso you brother who use to give talks (especially public talks) did you ever run into those brothers that always wanted you to speak "diplomatically" and "show love" all the time even though when you gave a talk and discussed certain points in a honest and straightforward way there was nothing wrong with what you did?
some people just don't like to hear the truth and even want you to "water things down" so that you "tickle" people's ears.

The old WT understanding (cited in the OP) was based on the idea that Jesus "arrives" in 1914, and thus requiring a long 'dividing' period before he passes judgment. The new WT understanding sees Jesus 'arriving' just prior to the battle of Armageddon (after the great tribulation has already begun).
Wait, wait, wait, wait.... if Christ didn't arrive in 1914 how in the world did he pick his earthly organization in 1919?
Sorry, this is a new one on me. Talk about a fork in the road.

@apognophos - I understand that things may be different today, but when the change was made I distinctly remember the effort that went into changing the sales pitch. The building up of how valuable these materials were to householders and pushing the idea that "while we don't charge for these publications we really appreciate donations for these valuable study guides.".... and yes, in the beginning of the change we were expected to make up the difference, so a lot of the times we'd just leave tracts on return visits if we didn't get a good donation for the magazines on the first call, or if we got the feeling that they weren't going to donate we'd quickly make the switch to a tract or just leave nothing at all. In fact, RVs were largely built around the householders who would give the best donations. If someone only gave us a quarter for the magazines a lot of the time those people wouldn't even get called back on, or you'd make sure you'd hit up the RV's who you know paid first so you had a little wiggle room on the ones who you weren't sure about.

What exactly was this situation? I know what happened to Jimmy in the late 80's, but how did that influence the Society's decision to stop charging for literature? I always just assumed they stopped charging for publications for tax purposes.
