Agreeing with FriendlyFellaAL here.

What he will do is bring the space program publicity. You have NO IDEA how close several critical programs are to being cut here. Hell, we put men on the moon, but since, no American has left near orbit for, like, 30 years now.

There is just NO PUBLIC INTEREST in space right now. Which is a terrible, terrible shame.

Hubble has helped some, but only to draw the techie crowd back to space. We need public exposure - big pop stars saying things like "space is cool, let's all go..." and stuff.

One live broadcast from the ISS from him could do more for the US space program than every PR campaign for the past decade.

Do you think that all grounding is emotional abuse?

No, not really. It was the extreme I am commenting on. Grounding is a more emotionally tied punishment, though. I guess it seemed more hurtful to me than anything physical, but then, I've always been something of a...errr....sensitive? kind of guy.

Personally, IMHO, the ideal would be for the child to have enough respect for the parent that the only discipline needed would be simply telling them that what they've done disappointed you.

I imagine it's very hard to get there, though.

"My Child is Dead"

this morning we published a very moving story written by a jehovah's witness whose 15-year-old son died supporting the watchtower's society blood policy.

to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time a jw parent has gathered up the courage to face down this monstrous policy after losing their child.

this is a very special person indeed and when we finally gather enough of these folks together and set them in front of the right attorney, the wts will be in for some serious litigation.. at present mary is in the midst of divorce from her jw husband and nailing down a custody agreement, so the identity of her and her son must remain anonymous.

I understand what you are saying Hawk, but, really, would the first hospital's following procedure in overriding the kids wishes or not following it have made any difference at all if the kid didn't TELL them 'no blood'?

Obviously, then, the first guilty party was the WTBTS for, without their brainwashing, none of the other events that led to his death could have occurred.

Well, as a (mostly) youngin, I can only comment on the fresh memories of my own youth. My parents did both - grounding and spanking.

I know I was spanked a lot. Can't remember particlar incidents, but I know it must have happened.

To this day, however, I can remember a 9-week stretch in which I was grounded from EVERYTHING. No TV, no computer, no having friends over or going to parties. NOTHING. Why, you might ask? Well, see, I got a 'C' on a report card. Yup, in my parents house, when you got a 'C', you were grounded from EVERYTHING until you brought it up to an 'A' (the interim reports were good enough to ground you for the remaining 4-1/2 weeks if they had a 'C' on them, too, but not good enought to unground if an 'A' was on them...) Weren't allowed to do anything but study...

So, I dunno, which form of discipline is better in the long term? I obviously learned from being spanked, and probably hated it at the time, but I don't remember any particular incident with crystal clarity a decade later.

Honestly, I think the emotional abuse parents inflict in grounding (IE., telling their child in no uncertain way that their accomplishments or behavior is more important than they are as a person) leaves a much more lasting scar than moderate physical punishment.

Perhaps 'grounding' in moderation, too? Not sure how much effect that would have on a modern kid, though. Cut out any form of entertainment, and they will find another just as interesting. Cut out ALL entertainment, though....

An interesting topic that is along these lines is NAFTA - the agreement that would allow no taxation between US<->Mexico trading. Many complained that this was bad for the US because it meant large companies here would move their factories to Mexico where labor was cheaper.

And, in the short term, they are right.

But, overall, what IS better for the US? More lower-wage jobs for the short term here? Or, long-term, the possibility of building an actual 1st-world country on our southern border?

Again, throwing money at the problem won't help. Third world countries don't need money. They need to be willing to modernize, and the 1st-world countries need to be willing to help (IE., invest in them).

That is the biggest problem in much of the third world. When industrialization started, they wanted no part of it. For religious or cultural reasons, or just plain poor leadership, they fell behind the curve.

And, once you fall behind THAT curve, it becomes harder and harder to catch up. Only, their cultural/religious/leadership continues to teach industrialization is evil - indeed, many Americans seem to be of the same opinion industrialization is harmful.

Well, without it, look where we'd be. Industry makes jobs. Jobs make money. Money makes commerce (which can make jobs on its own). The US is very much a commercialized nation now (with all its inherent instability), but third word countries have, for a large part, never even become industrialized.

My point, slip, was that "were the food is" moves around throughout human history. So, why should we bemoan that in this early part of the 21st century the wealth is in the US, Britain, etc., the 'western world'. It won't stay that way for long, it never does.
