Thanks Barbara! I will be discussing a strategy for rolling out the survey with RayPublisher tomorrow night. I'm hoping it gets as much publicity as possible, and we will certainly be delighted to have excellent websites such as yours associated with this project.

Census / online survey idea - thoughts please...
by cedars ini've been thinking about the recent developments in the uk following the "apostates = mentally diseased" article in the july 15th edition of the watchtower.
to provide a bit more background, a forum member named amelia has recently had a meeting with uk police officers who subsequently took a copy of the article for their records.
they agreed that the content could potentially incite people to hatred against disaffected witnesses, and the copy is now on file with the uk police in case there are any future incidents of hateful acts against "apostates", including violence or even stalking.. i am working on a press release to make the public more aware of the idealogical oppression being meted out by the society on those who oppose them, both inside and outside the organization.

UK newspaper interest in "mentally diseased", any Witnesses want to come forward?
by cedars infollowing the recent activity surrounding the "mentally diseased" apostate article, a major uk newspaper has expressed an interest in covering the story.
the correspondent as been told about this forum, and he is particularly interested in hearing from those inside the organisation, as i think few people are aware of how much unrest there is actually within witness ranks at the teachings of the society.. would anybody like to be used as a source, either anonymously or otherwise?
if so, it might be worthwhile saying a few words on this thread.

Yes, I put links to the simplified English version on my original thread regarding this article:
Very good point Mad Sweeney.

Hi Mickey Mouse - Thanks, I have replied to your PM. Feel free to share your thoughts on here, because the correspondent has received a link to this thread and I'm sure he'll be checking it. Alternatively, you can PM me your thoughts and I will forward them on to the correspondent directly. However, I would prefer if the feedback could be posted on this thread, if only so that the correspondent can see for himself the amount of people who are affected by this issue in particular.
MadSweeney - a very good point. I've already referred to that Watchtower on previous posts as being the "Watchtower of Hate", such is the extent of hateful remarks directed against "apostates" and disfellowshipped teenagers alike. The correspondent now has a PDF of the article in question, so I'm sure he will be using his journalistic know-how to analyse the magazine and see what needs to be brought out from an outside perspective.

Question about 607/587
by drewcoul ini am not an expert on this issue.
i have read and re-read information about it, but i guess i am somewhat dense when it comes to this topic.. my question is simple: the watchtower suggests that they believe the bible is the unerring word or god.
that it must be believed above anything else.

Assuming this was meant as a literal figure, the 70 years, it could be taken to run from 609BCE to Babylon's fall in 539BCE. without arguing with known history.
Doug Mason argues successfully in his critique that the 70-year servitude (whether you consider this the actual exile or not) ended when Cyrus captured Babylon, because Babylon collapsed as a world power as a result of this event. How could the Babylonian Empire STILL be holding God's people in servitude two years later when it no longer actually existed? This alone is powerful argument against 607 BCE.

drewcoul - I have PMd you, but here is the thread from which Doug Mason's critique can be downloaded. I found it to be very well written and researched.

drewcoul - I think they say that for two reasons.
Firstly, it interferes with the 1914 extrapolation.
Secondly, they claim that 587 contradicts the "seventy year" exile of the Jews. If the Jews returned home in 537 (or thereabouts), it is claimed that the exile must automatically have begun 70 years prior to that. However, there are a number of lines of argument to suggest that it isn't that simple. For one thing, Jeremiah's original prophecy was that Israel AND the surrounding nations would be in servitude for seventy years, and NOT NECESSARILY exile beyond their borders. Also, numbers are deeply symbolic, and the word "seventy" must be approached from an ancient Jewish perspective, and not from a modern western date-obsessed perspective.
I wish I could give a more detailed answer, but I have yet to throughly scrutinize the excellent "Critique of When Was Ancient Jeruslaem Destroyed" by Doug Mason (PM me if you want a link to the download). The truth is, I can't get excited enough about the subject because I no longer believe in the 1914 chronology anyway.
Hope that is helpful.

I should add, for anyone reading this who decides to use scribd.com to read Crisis, that if you DOWNLOAD it, it is best to disable some of the features that link through to your facebook page. Otherwise (if you are still a dub) it could take some explaining if a message flashes up on your facebook wall saying "Such-and-such is now reading Crisis of Conscience". Obviously this doesn't apply if you are DF'd or DA'd.
Just thought it might be worth adding that note of caution!

Hello everyone
Following the recent activity surrounding the "mentally diseased" apostate article, a major UK newspaper has expressed an interest in covering the story. The correspondent as been told about this forum, and he is particularly interested in hearing from those INSIDE the organisation, as I think few people are aware of how much unrest there is actually within witness ranks at the teachings of the Society.
Would anybody like to be used as a source, either anonymously or otherwise? If so, it might be worthwhile saying a few words on this thread. Obviously, he will no doubt reserve the right to decide for himself which remarks or experiences are the most relevant, so nobody (including me) can be guaranteed that his or her experience will be used, but I thought it would be worthwhile to give everybody the opportunity to come forward if you feel you have something to say.
Off you go!
