  Thanks Mad, this is good stuff. Very interesting. Yes, I do beleive that the whole UN thing could have been a cause of contention amongst the heavies at Bethel - I'm sure some of them didn't approve ...

  Oh, I was getting the impression that that was a fairly new addition - because I am unable to find much evidence of 'pro-UN' stuff from the early 90s. It was mostly really tiny blurbs about 'the UN's year of this or that' in amongst their regular programming. I guess they may have cut 'n pasted those short blurbs to submnit to the UN. I still cannot fathom why the huge full pro-UN Awake mag in 98 ....

  did you have narrow minded turds as elders/overseers in your congregation?

  yup so did i...they're everwhere.. "there was this one time..at band camp"....it was in a hired hall actually...where we used to organise congregation functions like farewells etc.

  this usually consisted of food...non alcoholic beverages...and some entertainment...usually square dancing and some skits...and a presentation or speech.. at one function a particular elder was offended that the 'gay gordon' was one of the dances for the evening...so he promptly left...yup...at the next function it was renamed the 'happy gordon'...as his conscience wouldn't allow him to attend otherwise.

  Good god, I had tried to forget how assinine the JWs and their damn offensive personalities were. "Oh you walked funny I'm offended" "Oh you talked funny I'm offended" "Oh you drove 36MPH in a 35 zone, I'm stumbled"

  I have NEVER NEVER seen such a fuddy-duddy, walk on eggshell, live everybody else's conscience group of people in my life!!! Makeing every decision in your life based on 'would this offend' someone. And the answer was YES! No matter what you do or don't do you offended someone.

  Of course, if you were an elder or elders child the world revolved around you and you could do no wrong. That is unless of course you somehow got on the elite group's 'bad side' then you were toast.

  Hawk, I find it interesting the importance the UN placed on the NGO having the capability to distribute UN information - books, mags, radio, TV, etc. Obviously it was easy for the WTBTS to say "Look at all the mags we print" to point out how they could diseminate UN information. But I don't see how the UN policed the ACTUAL doing so of the NGOs. Maybe the 1998 article was in response to some critizism of the WTBTS of failing to live up to their end of the bargan, so the UN said "Put up or shut up".

  I'm really beginning to doubt your research skills. :)

  You mean to tell me that out of all the HUMAN RIGHTS THEME ARTICLES, including those re the WTS's problems in Russia and France, that all the FEEDBACK for this ISSUE that you could find were 4 LETTERS regarding the "Young People Ask" article, 1 LETTER re the short "Washing Hands" article, and 1 LETTER re one of the "Watching the World" blurps?

  Surely, you are missing all the FEEDBACK regarding ALL THE REALLY IMPORTANT ARTICLES FROM THAT ISSUE?

  Ah ha! My thick skull just got the heavy sarcasm that's dripping from Mad's post. - Funny - all that 'good news' about the UN's wonderful human rights programs AND NOT ONE LETTER about it .... hmmmmmmmmmmm

  Hmmmm. So they did it 'voluntarily', but did not have to prove to the UN that they were doing so. But somewhere down the line the UN wanted proof from them (or ALL NGO's?) that they were living up to their end of the bargan?

  Interesting Hawk. So they had to agree to distribute UN documents!? Meaning they had to pass out UN printed docs OR include actual UN text in WT documents? Very interesting!!!!!

  i'm pulling this out of the original thread since people are blowing by this as if it were nothing.. the blue portion appears on page 17 of the june 1, 1991 watchtower, in the article titled their refuge--a lie!, which criticizes "christendom" for seeking help from the united nations rather than jah.. .

  "prayer and meditation at the united nations"-- robert muller .

  "prayer, meditation and spirituality at the un are fascinating subjects.

  I'd love to scan the CD(s) if I could ...

  I'm trying to figure out what articles/info they submitted to the UN in the original application to prove they were 'disiminating information about the UN's programs"? There were very short blurbs here and there over the early 90s but nothing like that 1998 Awake. I wonder what changed that required them to produce such a huge article(s) about the UN? I wonder if the UN came down on them for not doing more in the UN's service?
