Oh, and the Catholic Archd iocese would not be declaring bankruptcy if they had not already moved most of their assets to another location(s) - my wonder is how they have done so w/out leaving a trail. And my other suprise over that move is the fact that the BK court now has free run of their books. I never thought I'd see that happen. If the BK court is any good at all they will follow every sniff of $$$$ they can trace.
But it's all just a shell game.

Hey JT, it's true that more and more, the JWs that are left in are the ones that just can't mentally or emotionally stand to have their 'shopping cart' taken away!
I wonder if the company's that make Prozac/etc have thought about sponsering the WT in it's time of finacial need - it's in their best interest to keep the #'s of JWs high

Gopher, ah I see. I guess that was what I was getting at when I edited my above post to add "AND the elders have 'approved' you" - there is a process you have to go through to be considered 'an unbaptised publisher' or whatever they call them today.

reubenfine: I have yet to see one set up, but from reports it's becoming increasingly popular among JWs. When I was leaving they were pushing telephone, letters, and street more and more. Street I could handle, since it meant I could stand around and not talk to anyone, basically do nothing. Telephone and letters I refused to do - I HATE telemarketers and there was no way I was going to do that myself. Yes, indeed, 4 JWs can sit in the corner, be ignored all morning, and at the end of the day feel good about counting their 2 hours. It's a win win for them, and as you noticed, the world passes them by ....
Ascot, to true, when F Franz ceased to be the prophetic marvel that he was, spinning the most inane (but good sounding) nonsense to the JWs, they became lost doctrinally. The most obvious, to me, sign of this was the incredible weak explaining away of the generation teaching. 2 talks and 2 WT articles about it, and I have yet to meet ONE JW that can understand or explain it. You had 2 choices when confronted w/ that 'explination' 1) stick your hand in your ears 'la la la I can't hear you' and pretend it made sense, or 2) realize you'd been bamboozeled your whole life.

So no monthly time report is accepted from a non-publisher.
I'm not sure how to intreprete that statement - do you mean no time report from an un-baptised person? If so I don't think that is (or was) true - every hall I went to, it's # of pubs included unbaptised children who were 'publishers'. As far as I know, the counting of pubs and time is very simple ...
If you turn in a time slip (baptised or not) you are counted as one publisher and x # of hours/books/mags/etc. (Edited to add: AND the elders have 'approved' you)
So yes, the # of pubs is more than likely higher than the # of actual baptised JWs, though I would bet that if you factor in the number of non-reporting baptised JWs (who are NOT counted in the # of pubs) then the figures may even out.
For example, one hall I went to counted 78 publishers ... I would guess that maybe 10 or so were unbaptised children.

Absolutely! The lack of anything of substance is a huge tell. I noticed this as I faded in the mid-90's - every meeting was a mind-numbing marathon of nothing more than tired old Clichs and demands for more more more FS, meetings, donations. FS was nothing more than driving to empty houses, leaving mags/tracts in doors, or the few people you'd meet a 20 sec canned 'please buy these mags they explain the bible' presentation.
And it's getting worse rapidly, now there are no JWs visible in the community, at least I never see them. And from reports here the 'new' preaching consists of setting up a table in public and waiting for people to come up asd ask for mags (which really, in today's world, is going to be pretty much nobody). So much for this 'zealously proclaiming Jehovah's kingdom'. If I were a normal person, I would have NO IDEA what JWs beleive, probably not even be very aware that they even existed. Much less 'realize' that my eternal life depended on joining their little cult.
I really think that most of the JW's of today are there out of routine and habit.

True dat, dubla. If they beat Miami (w/ a now working Jay F and a 200+ yards Ricky) then they will have earned their ticket to the playoffs. The pack looked like they were on fire 3 weeks ago, but 2 losses and an almost loss to the hapless Vikings at home/Lambo make them appear not so hot now ... but w/ Farve you never know. Can't count them out yet

i spent the first 24 years of my life as a jw, starting in danbury, ct, then to fayetteville & charlotte, nc, and finally brooklyn, bethel, where finally all of my negative inner thoughts and feelings were confirmed.
(from the ages of 14-24 i always felt something just didn't add up with the organization, but i could never quite put a finger on it) i spent my career at bethel in the brooklyn warehouse/purchasing departments and worked with some really great individuals.
TinkerBell - I knew (of) the Raglands - from Lebonon / Nashville right? They weren't in my age group so I didn't know them well, but I met them a few times. Small world huh?
