recently, it has been said that jw's do not solicit money going door to door.
if this is the case, then why are the following points going contrary to what the 'official line is' ?.
1-the co counselled the congregation recently saying that 'not enough people were mentioning the donation arrangement'.. 2-we are 'told' to mention the donation arrangement every time there is a presentation on 'what to say about the magazines'.
Me too. I left no $$ when I picked it up, and rarely to never asked for $$ at the door. I just felt cheap saying "The mags are free, but please give me some $$" So I just didn't ask. I was an abuser of the system
my mom is always complaining of something or another every week.
she is not that old and is in fairly good health.
she eats good and gets moderate exercise but she always has something wrong with her.. do you think that dubs get sicker than normal people cause of stress or maybe their body just overwhelmed with all the requirements finally says ok...if it takes you being sick to rest then you'll be sick?.
I have to agree with Dawn. Stress and depression, unchecked (and guilt fed) for years takes a huge toll on the human body. Which is why you see so much chronic fatigue, etc type illness in JW-land.
i always wondered why we remodeled our kh.
there wasn't really anything wrong with it.
i could see painting or putting in new carpet when needed.
1) How does the Society justify charging interest on these loans to the congregation, which is clearly unscriptural? Surely there has been a "questions from our readers" about this?
ASFAIK, they may not be charging interest anymore. In the past, in the US, they charged from 3-6%, which was extremely low, but as you note, not the 'christain' thing to do.
2) Who holds the property deed? Is it the Society, or the local congregation? I don't mean a lien - if the WT holds the mortgage, they have a lien on the property, of course. But my house is "mine" as long as I make the payments, with the deed in my name. Whose name is on the deed for most halls?
This one is tricky, and I am sure varies from KH to KH. In many cases there is a local corporation (w/ local elders on the 'board of directors') that actually 'owns' the KH. But there is a rider that on any change to the local corporation, disolveing, etc, ownership reverts back to the WTBTS (or one of it's many corps). Also, the KH cannot be sold w/ out involving the WTBTS. So the local congo 'owns' the building in name only. They cannot as a group decide to sell it and split up the $$$.
3) Francois - you claim that the Society was listed as a secondary insurer. If they are able to provide insurance, they must be registered as an insurance company. This doesn't show much "trust in Jehovah with all your might", hmm? If you can find proof that they are an insurance company, they must have an AM Best rating. I was unable to find any reference to the WT at ambest.com.It is a fact that the WTBTS provides insurance to halls, assebly halls, etc. I think that because the are a 'self-insurer' and a non-profit org, they do not have to fall under the same systems that 'regular' insurance companies have to. Others probably have more info on this.
as rutherford progressively tightened his grip over the "companies" (as congregations were then termed), he ran into increasing difficulty with "russellite hold-overs" and elective elders.
he'd already infiltrated the companies with his brooklyn-appointed "service directors," but many many jws were resisting his attempts to enforce total conformity to wts policies.
chicago was one such "hot spot," leading to the following show-down:1933 watchtower, may 15 page 153. .
BTTT. Very Interesting!

All the time (in the US). Here's how it goes. Congo build new hall. Congo takes out WTBTS loan to build said hall. Congo pays off or gets close to paying off said hall. C.O. begins to 'pressure' congo to remodel. Guess where the $$$$ for the remodel comes from? Your pocket. Yep, another WTBTS loan to 'remodel', which YOU payoff.
One hall I was loosely associated with a) built new, even though they had not outgrown the old, b) remodeled 2 years later, c) remodeled another 3 years after that. Last I heard they were being pressured to build ANOTHER hall. This in spite of the fact that they have less KH attendence now than when they built the hall in the first place.
As in all things in JW land - just follow the $$$$$.
if so, does it affect your relationship?
is it hard to deal with?
i think that this is becoming a more common scenario in american society.
Right now I make more, but that might very weell change in the near future if her current job keeps going the way it's going.
I could care less which one of us makes more $$. It all goes into the same big shared pile, and we spend out of it as we both see fit. Of course, if she rakes in the big bucks I'm quiting and going to school, the one big thing I missed out on.
silentlambs press release - april 24th, 2003:
press release.
thursday, april 24. .
BTTT. Any word on the schedule? Just 'CBS News'. What time, any clue?
the latest kingdom ministry (may) has a few changes.
first, it has an insert called "international kingdom hall building in some european lands" - designed to extract more $ from the friends.
the announcement section tells people how to write checks payable to "jehovah's witnesses" for donations - but...
I cannot understand how the previous 10 years of constant whining and begging for $$$ hasn't broken the backs of most JWs. It drove me crazy, once the 'donation' arrangement went into effect the pleadings for $$$$ were constant. Coming from a religion that pretends to not solicit $$$ and 'rely on Jehovah'. Makes me want to scream "WAKE UP" to the JWs that are left in. Come with me and repeat the JW mantra .... (read in a trance like monotone)
More service - more meetings - more study - more guilt - give $$$$$ - More service - more meetings - more study - more guilt - give $$$$$ - More service - more meetings - more study - more guilt - give $$$$$ - More service - more meetings - more study - more guilt - give $$$$$
Repeat as often as needed.
there is this funny anecdote i remember from my jw days that i would like to tell:.
in the mid seventies there was a french movie released over here about .
the story of david & goliath, and some jw's of our congregation wanted to see it.. now this movie of which i forgot the title was nothing special but as is usual .
Yep. ET = Jesus or some crap like that. It was 'bad'. Star Wars, also 'bad'. Any movie w/ the word damn in it - you guessed it - 'bad'.
