It is generally bad policy to see yourself as a victim or as being taken advantage of. Someone will come out of the woodwork and victimize you. Times are tourgh all over and your company may not be doing as well as they did last year. So many are unemployed right now. That the board offered you a higher salary is a good indicator that you are a valued employee. That they need you to cut back on your hours tells me that their labor costs are out of line. I have managed various operations for more than 40 years. Computers enable us to keep close track of our labor costs. When they get above a certain level, cuts have to be made. Better to cut hours than to cut people. Take the raise, cut the hours and reduce the stress.

Why do the JW's not Believe in Hell?
by Tirisilex ini may have asked this question before awhile back but i was not able to find it in the search.
other than what the nwt provides for information.. how do the jw's provide proof for this no hell belief?

A Paduan raises some good points. Someone on another thread pointed out that the original meaning of the word hell at the time the King James was translated was "to limit or restrict". Farmers frequently "helled" their livestock (Put them in pens). In that sense, it is ironic that the JWs don't believe in "hell" as they have created one. I personally know several folks who are living in hell right now, many of whom are JWs. Worldly Girl pointed out that pooh pooing the foolish fundamentalist doctrine of a fiery place of punishment is a great selling point when dealing with those kind of folks. That is what attracted my wife to the JWs. She was willing to overlook their shaky docrine in other areas because of that one thing. Hell is not a place but a state of consciousness. We are living in eternity right now.

Really good paper. I can appreciate this as I live it everyday. He is correct about the marriage only working if the male is the unbelieving relative. I can't imagine a working relationship if the female was the unbelieving one.

Meeting JW grandparents for dinner - what to expect?
by acadiel ini guess this is more of a "what do i expect when" type question.. my mother left the jw's when i was a child and was subsequently disfellowshipped.
i'm 28 and only remember seeing my maternal grandparents once in my life - at a cousin's graduation (who was still jw at the time.
anyways, since my mother's parents (and all my other relatives) are over 950 miles away, when we were there last, i stopped in at their address and visited.

Wolfgirl gave you good advice. Avoid the subject of religion. This situation is but a reflection of the tragedy that disfellowshipping and shunning cause. The really sad part is that your grandparents feel justified in what they did.

Congratulations on your achievement. Jerry not only makes great chocolate martinis, but also a great Peanut Soup. If you would agree to take him off our hands, Jade, Roo, and I might come up with a dowry.

What is the Purpose of this Site - My personal opinion?
by jst2laws ini was a little surprised to learn that many people do not really understand the purpose of jwd.
many are focused on freedom of speech and the fact that this is a "discussion" board.
to some this does seem to go against the heavy moderating the board has seen lately, feeling that discussion is suppressed, some going so far as to suggest that mind control is subtly involved here as in the organization.

Self esteem/acceptance and Christianity
by AJN ini've been in therapy for some years now (on and off - currently on) and during that time have managed to build my self-esteem and self-acceptance to a level where i am actually starting to like and value myself (after having abuse issues to address).
about 12 months ago i started reading conventional christian literature and web sites, by this time i had forgotton most of the jw beliefs (although the fear of armageddon still ran deep, disturbing my inner equilibrium.
i (re)discovered that to call oneself christian one had to admit to being a sinful human being who is deserving of death because of my very inbuilt nature.

I am with Dan The Man on this one which is why I no longer think of myself as a Christian, but do consider that Jesus is my master teacher. The mission statement of the Unity church where I attend is: Our mission is to live and teach the transformative message of Jesus Christ in a loving community that celebrates the Christ spirit in all people. Our pastor is just as likely to quote from the Bagavad Gita or the Upanishads or the Tao Te Ching as from the bible. Our scripture reading this morning came from the Gospel of Thomas (One of those Gnostic gospels that didn't make the cut in 325 A.D.)

Evolution Question(s)
by Cassiline inif we have evolved my assumption is we still are evolving correct?
or am i wrong in this assumption as well?
with all that was wrought on jws this is one teaching i can not get past that of evolution v. creation.

As has been pointed out, the "evolution" of our physical bodies is so slow as to be inconsequential as far as we are concerned. A trip to any museum showing clothing from the early 1800's will show how small our ancestors were compared to where we are today. Good diet does make a difference. However, the exponential change in our technology is but a reflection of the exponential "evolution" in consciousness which we are experiencing right now. My father passed away in 1982 at the age of 82. During his single lifetime he saw the first airplane fly and progress to the point where he saw man walk on the moon. Wow! That is what I call evolution. The Creationist vs Evolutionist fight is simply an argument about means and methods and not worth wasting time about. The next "frontier" may be expanding human consciousness rather than outer space.

Where were you at 33 years of age?
by DanTheMan ini've managed to survive 33 years (and a couple of weeks).
what a long strange trip it's been.. in spite of some tell-tale signs of aging (wrinkles around eyes, gray hair, mystified and sometimes terrified by the current youth culture) in some ways i still feel like a little kid who doesn't know anything.
what have you learned since then?

I had been married for 10 years to a woman who had been a JW Dub for 5 years. Had 5 kids and was a Major in the USAF flying C-130 transports all over the world. Have now been married 45 years to that same woman, have 6 kids, retired as a LTC from the USAF, retired again after a 24 year career as a Civil Engineer, still working part time and loving it. Yes, I do get the Senior Citizen Discount without asking for it.

Logan's Run
It is not so much that Christianity is a failure; but that it has never been really tried.
