Being in a cult - what good did it do?
by Garrett inso, here's a bit of a different point of view.
while most of us will agree that our time within the jw cult was rather terrible, however, i'd like to look at another aspect.
did anything good come out of being in a cult and then waking up from it?.

The actual leaving I feel had no real benefit. Having left my children have probably benefited more than me. Although one of my children recently discussed where financially they would have been had we as parents not been witnesses.I pointed out they may not have benefited from such a good christian upbringing had we not have been raised by Witnesses. -

A short while ago a man I know through my business had reason to ask if I was afraid of death. I said not really. He put his hand on my should and looked at me. Don't be, He said, I've left my body many times. He then described in some detail his out of body experiences. -

Why do we get TTATT and others don't?
by quest81 ini have thought about how ttatt came full circle for me.
how the connecting the dots was simple and just made sense,.
how silos of information are literally at our fingertips today.. why is it that the ones we love cannot get ttatt?.

Why do we get TTATT and others don't?
I think we are all different with different lives and circumstances and various reasons as to why we believe.
When I left it had a connection to something many years earlier and in the years between I had examined my faith and concluded it was sound. In those years some left, as an example I think some left after 1975 and although I believed it ended 6000 years of a 7000 year creative day it wasn't enough for me to doubt the faithful and discreet slave class commission and having Jehovah's holy spirit . Then a Watchtower article altered my view and conclusion and I found I left. Others came to a different conclusion when I discussed it with them.

When you were Hard-Core JW, did Opponents Screaming or Filming you help your Exit?
by PokerPlayerPhil inall of us are upset in different ways, some of us are ferociously angry because, let's face it, it's our fault!
i had many clues they were lying about our religion but i failed to see through them because of the pain of admitting we got conned and family pressure from peers stopped me from making a courageous choice.
when i read about people who confronted the elders and won their judicial committees (even though the jw elders df'ed them) my heart goes out to their courage, their amazingly stronger than i will ever be.

When attending Meetings during your zealous involvement with Organiztation would protestors using strongarm methods have changed your minds they way facts on JWN and JW-Facts have?
When i was a Witness neither would have changed my mind and I left before I had the internet so JWN and JW-Facts have had no bearing on my leaving. The account at Acts 5;32-42 had an influence on my view. My change of mind simply came down to my own conscience and what it allowed me to do or not do. I would not have read anything I viewed as possibly being 'apostate' or have listened to those who had left the organization.

When my parents became Jehovah's Witnesses I think they accepted that we were living in the last days the sign of Christ's presence had been seen. They accepted that the Kingdom was established in 1914. I remember as a child we studied the 'Paradise book' and there is, I believe, an illustration of a baby taken up to heaven. I think I was asked about the picture and I got it wrong. It was the birth of the kingdom.
In accepting the 'good news' my parents I believe also accepted that the only ones preaching the end of the 'gentile times' were Jehovah's Witnesses particularly the remnant of the anointed ones. These I believe they, and later myself, accepted as the faithful and discreet slave class.
The book published in 1959 'Jehovah's Witnesses in the Divine Purpose' tells you on page 37 that Russell believed that Jesus became invisibly present in 1874 among other things. I think they were at least somewhat aware of past things that the witnesses had said and or taught.
In the early days of them being Witnesses and my upbringing the Watchtower had this to say (I also quoted it on another thread)
'That organization for which we must look is the one that gives the proof of having God's spirit poured out upon it in these "last days" by doing the foretold prophesying, the 'preaching of this good news of God's kingdom in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations....The record points to the anointed remnant of Jehovah's Christian Witnesses.'
When they were baptised I believe that they accepted this. The same article also said this
'The spirit of the God of truth can be expected to cause a purification of the things that are preached by God's approved loyal organization. His spirit would not allow for anyone to prophesy falsehood, the preaching of lies and errors under the cloak of religion.'
I think they also accepted this. That God's approved loyal organization can expect to be purified by the spirit of truth. Changes could be made.
I don't think changes would have made them not believe that Jehovah's Witnesses were not the anointed or that they had been commissioned to do the preaching.
I think in accepting that we were in the last days, and also when my parents became witnesses the belief was that the great tribulation had started in 1914, I think we were in a different time period.
Every Governing Body Decision is from Jehovah
Maybe if it is accepted that the Governing Body is appointed as part of the anointed then in a way it is true as we don't fully understand God or his ways like why he permits wickedness or how he has always been we may not understand why he permits a decision or not.

Them: we need to obey those that take the lead among us and trust them. They are appointed by jehovah
In my opinion a person has to be convinced of the appointment or else they could be a hypocrite and I don't think they would want to encourage hypocrisy.
