We moved to a new congregation and because of the early meetings (7pm on Thurs) and the commute it was impossible to get to the meeting on time. Within the first month the Local Needs talk was on the importance of getting to the meeting on time........What a welcome to the congregation! After that I decided that if I would be late I wouldn't go at all. The next local needs was soon after some teanagers were publicly reproved.......The part was on Oral Sex and why it is pornea......Wonder what those kids were doing???

LOCAL NEEDS TALKS, ANY YOU REMEMBER?
by minimus inone of the best tools the elders have to counsel the congregation is the local needs part.
how does one usually get picked for this talk?
generally, during an elder's meeting, one elder will have his pet peeve.he convinces the body that this issue has to be handled by the body.

It has been a long long time since I used a line. But, I wonder if the one I used back when will still work:...."I really enjoyed the WT study this morning, did you appreciate the point the conducted made about......?"

Who Here Believes in God?
by The_Bad_Seed inpersonally, i do not believe god ever has or ever will exist.
i have my reasons -- i guess i could be considered an agnostic, rather than an athiest.
i was curious to see what the larger part of the former borg community believed, now looking from the outside in, rather than the opposite.

Put in my vote for agnostic. Although I believe there is a god I do not believe that he is following the day to day or minute to minute affairs of individuals. And, I am sure he is embarrassed by what passes off as religion.

Do JW's count BBs and Chat Rooms as Service Time?
by alliwannadoislive inout of interest, i've just posted the following at: http://forums.delphiforums.com/flame1/messages which is frequented by a number of active jws.. general discussion - do jehovah's witnesses count time here ?
previous | next from: alliwannado 5:16 am to: all (1 of 1) 465.1 it's a genuine question - do jehovah's witnesses count the time they spend posting on bulletin boards or in chat rooms as service time ?
i guess it completely fits in with the definition of witnessing to non-baptised individuals about jehovah's kingdom.

my time started the minute I sat down at the computer and ended when I got up after logging off. If I spent time surffing the net, I just considered that break time....which we all know you can count.

If you do not want to DA, just fade away. If you can move to another area, that is even better. The elders may decide to hunt you down and DF you. It really depends upon the group you are with.

non-jws can be nice too
by jack2 inlast night on abc tv's "primetime" a story was aired about the people of gander, new foundland, who extented a great degree of hospitality toward total strangers as planes were diverted to nearby airport in the wake of the attacks on the world trade centers on 9/11.. food was prepared and served.
people opened their homes to the passengers.
some passengers have even returned to gander to bond once again with the people who showed them such kindness.

Throughout my life I was always taught that the worst person in the organization is better than the best person of the world. Even when I believed in the borg I had trouble reconciling situations similar to what you describe.

I used to count time when "witnessing" over the computer. Although when I did it it was pre internet. I had a Prodigy account and used to enjoy some of the discussions. It was the only time I enjoyed my fs time.
Actually, the discussions forced me to attempt to validate what I believe....which was the beginning of the end of my faith.

Here is another bizarre statement. I remember going to one of the terror movies of the early 70's, I think it was Earthquake, with a group of young witness kids. Our chaperone told us to watch the movie closely because this is god's way of preparing us for what we are going to face in the grate tribulation.

We had a speaker once that explained that once the earth was filled up with people in the new order that we would become space travelers and start inhabiting other planets. Every public talk after that for the next six months had a reference to becoming space travelers.

Did the 1914 Generation Die Anyway?
by JanH indid the 1914 generation die anyway?
ver since the beginning of the watchtower movement, they have had some sort of deadline for god's activities.these activities could be the rapture of the saints (which jws today do not believe in), the destruction of "false religion", ie every other religious group, or the final end of this world.
earlier, these deadlines were explicit dates.

Excellent post. I remember attending the WT study when the 1995 article was discussed and was taken back by the total lack of understanding of the significance of the change. There was no after meeting discussion bny the R&F and the tone and mood of the congregation during the study was no different than any other study. I am sure that even the society was amazed at how easy it was to insert a major doctorinal change.
