I grew up in a hardcore jw family and we always had turkey in Thanksgiving.
Even as an adult I we use to invite other jws for turkey on Thanksgiving day.
I always used the line "turkeys don't celebrate thanksgiving - people do."
i was feeling a bit guilty about celebrating as this is my 1st year out and i know the history of all the holidays and birthdays are pagan or bloody or idolatrous.. .
but i was thinking that it's not what someone made them in the past but what they are right now.. to us, at this moment.
am i going to sit down on thanksgiving.. and say, "i hate those indians, think i'll go kill some"..????

wow, i'm asking elders for advice, how strange.
anyway if you want to know my history and where i am look at my first 1/2 dozen or so posts, it'll bring you up to speed.
here's where i need advice.
claim of depression + move to new congregation + time = freedom
when we had our boe meetings we would say an opening and closing prayer, very ritualistic and general.
during the meetings when there were difficult matters to decide, caring for widows or sick people or financial matters, i would suggest a prayer.
no one would agree to say one.
I was with one elder when we audited the accounts. He said a prayer before the audit and made me say a prayer after we completed the audit. We always opend and closed the BOE meetings with prayer. No prayers were ever suggested during.
does anyone still go to the memorial?
i was just thinking that although i made it quite clear to my wife that i was not going to go to anymore meetings or conventions (i made a comment about not wanting to be there when the kool-aid came out) that i caught myself thinking the other day that i might go to the memorial just to keep her happy.
but then i thought why?
I did not go to this past memorial. The first one I missed.
Generally the memorial is the meetinig that people continue to attend for a while even after declaring their independence from the borg.
out of curiousity, is there anyone on here that is in indianpolis, indiana, or the state of indiana for that matter?.
also was wondering if there are any exdubs who went to any indianapolis congregations in the 80's and 90's?.
I grew up in Indiana but havn't been back for many years.
my daughter produced, directed, and edited this video with her friend, who stars in it.
it is shot in my house.. please watch the video and give it a really high rating.
your comments are also greatly appreciated.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7kakaludnw.
I watched it but I forgot to rate. Does it count if I say that it was GREAT on jwd?
i just talked to my mom (dub) yesterday, which was poorly timed (after there meeting).
she tells me that the speaker said in his talk that there are two sides in this world - jehovah's side and satan's side.
if you are not on jehovah's side, then you are on satan's side.
They live in a world of black and white. I heard many times that if you are on the "fence" you are with satan.
i know this might sound like a very unusual questions but i was recently talking to a ex-jw's girl at my school and she made a very good point that i had never thought of.
she said that christians and jw's try to impose "guilt and fear" in their members by constantly comparing what the apostles and early christians suffered such as "beheadings, nail to crosses, burned alive, thrown to lions" and all sorts of horrible things.
she said they never just encourage you to serve god and jesus without their being a hidden doom and gloom message.
Guilt is used by many people, groups, and religion for one simple reason - it works.
as a lurker, i am now attempting my first post.
a question for any who may wish to comment.
what would be the response if i asked a jw to open our "discussion" in prayer to jehovah for our eyes to be open to the truth of what we are about to study?
It is also not uncommon to allow the person being studied with to open with prayer though not common very rare.
I think this would be very rare. I seem to recall some instruction from the society as to how to handle the "unconfortable" situation where the study wants to lead with prayer.
i get a phone call last friday telling me there was a note pinned to the door of my old house (deserted and up for sale) saying to contact this person asap because i am an heir to something or other.. eventually, i get around to it this morning; i make the call.. it seems xto energy corporation is looking for me because i'm an heir to my great grandmother's mineral rights to a 4 acre strip of land in burleson texas.
the land is wanted for drilling purposes by the oil and gas drilling exploration team.. i met with the agent this morning.
he showed me my great grandmother's obituary and his copy of the family tree.
This may be totally legit. However, something about it sounds too much like those emails that ask for your assistance to get an inheritance out of some far away foreign country that no one has ever heard of.
