  Nice job Cedars, keep it up.

  I think a 'tipping point' for the Witnesses, at least in the US, is when the number of ex-Witnesses ( or those who only associate thru family, but do not believe) exceeded the number of Witnesses. The Witnesses often cite the number of Memorial attenders as people who are 'waiting in the wings', interested people from the street. In reality, the vast majority of these Memorial attenders are former Witnesses, or family members who have come because of family considerations. They do not believe and will never believe. At the point when there are so many people who know enough about the religion to know that it is bull****, the religion has very limited growth potential.

  Why does it look like a government building?

  Not typical cookie cutter Witness architecture to be sure.

  I think I read that this building in Indianapolis was built in about 1910 by a religious organization, I forget which one. The Witnesses refurbished it. So being a historic building (also in a good location), they may get a lot of money for it.

  The plans announced last summer were that the Indianapolis, IN and London Ohio assembly halls would both be sold and a new 3000 seater built near Cincinnati. So far, beyond collecting money, there has been nothing done except put the for sale sign out in front of the building in Indy. They have not even purchased any land in the Cincy area yet. The whole deal is starting to sound fishy

  Suspicious Bags Found in Northeast Columbus

  COLUMBUS -- Several stores were evacuated Thursday after a suspicious briefcase and laptop bag were discovered at a shopping plaza.
  
  The items were discovered next to a parked car. The Giant Eagle and other stores at Stelzer and McCutceon Roads were evacuated.
  
  Members of the Columbus Bomb Squad were called to the scene to inspect the bags.
  
  Officers say the briefcase contained books. The contents of the laptop bag have not been revealed.
  
  No one was hurt.

  What isn't said is that the two bags contained Watchtower literature. A sister apparently had her car broken into and the thieves, after breaking the window, took the two bags, one of which looked like a laptop computer bag, but both bags were service bags full of literature. Once they learned that they were only books they discarded the bags at a shopping center parking lot. The sister, after calling the police, said "The bomb squad had to destroy our service bags, but at least we can get the books back." Geez, thanks!

  the borg is going to phase out big district assemblies - so they can fit 'em in assembly halls.. they will reduce the size of circuits.

  This is no secret, as the announce plans here (southwest Ohio, USA) are that there will be a 3000 seat assembly hall will be built that will be used in summer months for district conventions.... it follows that there would be a re-assignment of congregations and circuits to have smaller district conventions.... nothing notable here... hardly worth mentioning

  Will Embracing the Internet lead to Increased Growth for the Watchtower?

  more important than the reduction in the size of the new magazine is that the watchtower will be actively promoting its website and encouraging people use it to download magazines.

  my concern is that this has the potential to lead to an increase in growth for the watchtower.. the door-to-door preaching work has been one of the most inefficient means imaginable to gain converts, and done little more than tie up the time of active jws.

  now, by directing people to the internet, witnesses can spread their message at an alarming rate for little cost.. do you feel that this has the potential to lead to a surge in growth of jehovah's witnesses?

  My take is that the only reason they are directing Witnesses to the internet is so they will print out their own copies of the WT (and KM, until they get the bright idea to include the KM in the last 4 pages of the study WT). It's all driven by cost. I think the Society is really hurting for cash.

  This statement:

  "Actually, Russell by-passed all of man’s theology to study the true foundation of the Christian religion, that is, that which is revealed in the Bible itself"

  is simply not true, and never was. Russell was a product of his times and inherited the theology he was exposed to, most notably the Adventist groups that grew out of the Millerites of the 1840's. Out of curiosity a number of years ago I purchased some books from one of the Second Adventist groups, and was a bit surprised to read nearly identical statements as the above concerning William Miller. He supposedly used just the Bible and the concordance to determine what the Bible taught on every subject, without respect to previously conceived doctrine.

  Russell must have been very charismatic in person, but I think his success resulted from his writing skill, which was quite good. For instance, the Divine Plan was easy to read and made sense to the readers of the time period. Compare the Divine Plan to, say, the Three Worlds <snore>, which was written by Barbour and there is no comparison.

  there's also the assembly of jehovah's witnesses, 1201 n. delaware st. it's a majestic, century-old house of god, fronted by enormous stone pillars that would give samson pause.. .

  it was built in 1912 by christian scientists who, when they moved on, sold it to baptists.

  the baptists moved on in the 1970s and sold it to jehovah's witnesses.

  Thanks for posting this, brings back a lot of memories, not all good.

  One observation that I find incredible. For a couple of the conventions it gives the attendance and number baptized:

  1953 , attendance 126,387, baptisms 4640 ; 3.7% of attendees getting baptized

  1958 attendance 118463 (not sure if this was the entire attendance or not) , baptisms 7136 ; 6.0%

  Odd, the last small circuit assembly I saw had attendance of 750, baptisms 1 ; 0.13%

  Baptisms are at a dead crawl compared to the old days. How things have changed.
