One elder I knew very well made a career of taking advantage of the brotherhood. It was sort of a captive market for him, selling them cars, computers, etc, or renting one of his many rentals to them. I can't say it was illegal, but just seemed wrong and a misuse of a position of trust.

Dune (1984) - er, yeah, lol

i knew it wasn't gonna be great, but deary me.
i'm not gonna lie - this film is not good, in fact it's laughably bad in places.. first, i'd like to know the thought process that went behind choosing david lynch to write/direct.

The 1984 Dune was pretty lame, I have to admit, but I still found it interesting to watch.
There is a brand new Dune movie out this year, though, which some are saying is really a good adaptation of the book Dune. I think it covers the first half of the book, and another movie is planned/hoped for. I don't think it is released yet in the US, but it has been released elsewhere already.
I've become a fan of Quinn's Ideas, a youtuber with a lot of enthusiasm for science fiction. He has rekindled my interest in Dune, prompting me to reread some of the novels.

The "Regular Pioneer" title has now become a total joke
by pistolpete inwe just had our co visit a few weeks ago.
apparently, he was encouraging all who could to regular pioneer, to at least try it out for a year.
because of this, we had a few people in our hall become one.. so this weekend we were on zoom service, and the sister that was just appointed was talking about it.

I recall getting reduced prices for literature, and for subscriptions, when I pioneered (early '80's). I don't remember getting discount on food at assemblies, but it might have been. It has been so long ago.

Family members here watched it live. It was held in the Warwick auditorium, which holds about 800-1000. The Warwick Bethel family were all in attendance. I guess they have all been vaccinated and felt safe to do so. There were some brief views of the audience in the live transmission just before and after the session, but the recording seems to have excluded these views.

in science, references are used to support statements, introduce some ideas that other scientists may propose, etc.
they have a purpose.

I would say that there are several reasons.
An intentional nod to a previous director of a famous movie. The Nosferatu reference above is an example.
An historical statement - Apocalypse Now vs The Heart of Darkness
Unintentional or in the imagination/vision of the viewer. ex: The Fly
