Thanks for the information about Ray Franz. I had no idea he had fallen on ice. Last I had known he was living in the south where getting ice is a rare occurrence. People living where they don't get much ice often are surprised for that reason. It's so rare they don't expect it and are not used to it.

I'm amazed there are seven names of people on the writing committee. They write so little nowadays there doesn't seem to be much point to it. Maybe they're more like playwrights now, working on movie scripts.

2034 - A Future History of Jehovah's Witnesses
by slimboyfat ini don't know what i am talking about... read this post at your peril.
back in the 1960s there was, seemingly, a brief period of relaxation in authoritarianism among jehovah's witnesses.
those who have read raymond franz's 'crisis of conscience' will have heard the story about dan sydlik's remark about the need to 'open some windows to let some air in here'.

This thread is an interesting phenomenon, as it has spanned over 17 years (and counting) and the subject keeps taking on new dimensions.
DJW, I was a young man in the '80s too. It's hard to explain to people now, but the fear of nuclear war and the Cold War conflict was at the forefront of everyone's mind. The rhetoric and constant news bombardment may have had some role in attracting people to an apocalyptic group like the JWs. Reagan claimed later that his buildup of the US military was an intentional arms race intended to bankrupt the Soviet Union. I really don't know how true that was, but I do believe that the Reagan and Gorbachev combination of leadership resulted in defusing a world threatening crisis. This is one reason the Ukraine war is so alarming to me.
Back to the thread:
Several of my family members are still in, one a Bethelite, so I get some exposure to what the JWs are talking about. I've never heard anyone say anything about 2034, and the 'generation' is not mentioned at all anymore. Most JWs don't talk much about scriptural things. Its more of a social club now. They talk about getting hours, etc, but there is no substance to it.

Question #2 for JW's
by BoogerMan inhow could the "two witnesses" mentioned in revelation chapter 11 possibly be j.f.
rutherford and his companions who got jailed and then released in 1919?.
w14 11/15 p. 30 - so in the fulfillment of revelation chapter 11, the anointed brothers who took the lead at the time of the establishment of god’s kingdom in heaven in 1914 preached “in sackcloth” for three and a half years.. watchtower november 15, 2014, p. 30 - revelation 11:7 says that it is "the wild beast that ascends out of the abyss" which kills the 'two witnesses'.. since the wild beast of rev.

A little off topic, but I think the original teaching from the Russell days was that the two witnesses were the Old Testament and the New Testament. One of many teachings that Rutherford changed post 1919.

A little off topic, but I looked through Bishop Ussher's chronology (a recent reprint with modern readable print) and was simply astounded with the volume of work and detail in it. Lots of errors I'm sure, but for the mid 1600's it was really impressive. I think we tend to underestimate the impact Ussher had on religious thought since then, especially apocalyptic movements. It may be rash to surmise, but likely Adventism, Russelism, and the JWs wouldn't have come to be except for Ussher.

What could it be?
by RolRod inin a previous thread i mentioned how the society took down the pyramid monument at rosemont cemetary in pittsburgh.
well now there's something being built on the same site.
i'm thinking a high watchtower monument.

I am beginning to think they will put back the pyramid, or at least the undamaged parts with replaced parts. It wasn't a single piece of rock, but was made in slabs tilted together and fastened in some way. From the photos a few months ago when they took it down it looked like there were parts cracked from the vandalism.
I view it as an interesting example of grave art. It would be a shame if it were not put back in some fashion.

I wonder if they are WT-supported missionaries or need-greaters. If the latter, they are on their own. I have heard that in some muslim countries they have to preach only to those already Christian, and even have to live under an alias.
