I have always had the suspician that the birthday and Christmas ban (both instituted under Rutherford in the '20s) were directly intended to reduce contact between family members who stayed with the WT vs those who left the WT and joined with the Bible Student breakaway groups. Not so much the 'worldly' people, but the groups that were defined at the time as the 'evil slave'.

Will the faithful slave now allow birthdays..........
by BoogerMan in.....or ban jw sisters from using mascara??????
"the bible never refers to a servant of god celebrating a birthday.
this is not simply an oversight, for it does record two birthday celebrations by those not serving god.

Yes, Brother Friend was a well known figure back in the day. I think his first name was Maxwell, but I might be mistaken. His voice was really distinctive and was used in most of the assembly dramas in the '70s and '80s. -

making out like a bandit
by enoughisenough inhere is a practice i only recently learned about and am actually interested in learning more details...some of you may have experience on the subject.
i always thought it marvelous, loving, and kind how the brothers would go in ( at their own expense) after disasters and repair homes of the witnesses who had been adversely effected.
i personally have worked freely helping to clean and repair after flooding.

The 'disaster relief' work is indeed a money maker for the WT.
One comment I would add that hasn't been mentioned yet regarding flood damage, particularly in light of recent news of flooding in parts of Kentucky (US). Homeowner insurance in the US does not cover flood damage. Flood insurance in the US is the federal Flood Insurance Program. Homes that are not in a designated flood plain are seldom covered by the flood insurance unless the homeowner has voluntarily purchased it (relatively rarely so). The poor folks in KY mining towns situated along rivers nearly all are not covered for flood insurance. I don't expect the WT will be organizing disaster relief for the recent KY flooding, as there is no money in it for them.

One article I read said there were possible violations of the Espionage Act. Curious, but thats the same law used to go after Rutherford in 1918. I guess that must be the go-to law to use against cult leaders

I am just about to replace my aging hit water heater with a much more efficient one. I’m hoping to get a tax rebate to help cover the additional cost, thanks to the new law.

Arthritis pain. What works for you?
by Fisherman inthere are several prescription meds people use to relieve the pain of arthritis.
they work by suppressing the immune system or by reducing inflammation.
people also use otc anti-inflammatory pills, and even anti-allergy pills are reported to work because of being able to also reduce inflammation but people tell me that they are concerned to use some meds regularly because of potential side effects in long term use.

Elder Arrangement
by vienne inhi everyone, (including the person who down votes all of my posts).
as some of you know, i'm working toward my master's degree.
comments from those associated when the elder arrangement was introduced would help me with a research paper.. what was the reaction among adherents?

I am quite certain my father, who was a elder from the ‘70’s until he wasn’t able to communicate any longer (about 2012) never read the Bible through. I don’t remember him reading any book cover to cover, though he was quite intelligent and had high technical proficiency in his field. He just wasn’t a reader.

The pre 1940 books are really hard to find any more, and there is a market for them. Its a lot of trouble to navigate ebay, etc, but maybe you could give them to some needy soul who could then turn around and make a few bucks.
