by BoogerMan inthis is going to break the hearts of a lot of uber-jw's!
reddit has now removed the video link of samuel herd telling jw's they will no longer have to report time or placements - just tick a box which says "active.".

Wow, this is a major change. JFRutherford, NHKnorr, and old Freddie are probably rolling over in their graves.
I am a little surprised that elders and ministerial servants are not included in the groups who would continue to report their hours. After all, the unspoken 10 hour requirement is a major qualification for those positions, and now, just about anybody would qualify, as long as they know how to wash windows.
Biggest change in JW land in years
edited to add: my prediction : <within 10 years, women will be allowed to be ministerial servants and elders>

1961 1962 higher authorities
by Marcial inare there among you, dear friends, a specialist in american associations from around the 1950s -1970s and a little more?
to find out from what years in the usa the first subsidies were granted to religious congregations and other non-profit or charitable associations?
why this question is that i just thought that there is perhaps a link between doctrinal clarifications over the years and government innovations to support or subsidize these supposedly charitable religious organizations or certain qualified ngos?

Interesting experience with my PIMI Father
by joe134cd inthis highlights just how flawed the jw thinking is.
recently, it had been arranged for another jw to take my father to the convention in a couple of weeks time.
a few days ago my father is informed that his ride has refused to drive him due to his underlying health conditions.

One problem I have observed several times is that the JWs are pressured to attend conventions, however difficult or whatever the cost. An unfortunate result is that older folks are often riding together with their like-aged friends, making a long trip they seldom or never take on their own. They are not familiar with the roads, don't drive much in heavy city traffic, talk a lot in the car so the driver is distracted, driving a car which seldom leaves the county and isn't in the best of shape (worn tires, etc). Hence they often/usually get lost, have car trouble and mechanical breakdowns, and in the worst cases, have auto accidents.
That is about the only good thing about zoom, so that nowadays these ones can stay at home.

Good comment SBF,
I came to the belief some time ago that many, if not most, of the doctrinal changes post JFR were based on legal maneuvering around two issues:
1) the US draft. Getting the brothers the Minister classification was front and center. Creation of the Ministry School, invention of "pioneer', 'Qualified to be ministers', all this stuff was invented to present to the courts that JW men were 'ministers'.
2) missionary status for JWs being sent overseas , which Knorr started post WW2. Hence the Gilead school which purported to be missionary training.
The 'superior authorities' 180 degree turn probably fit into one of these two strategies. 'We're not opposed to governments, we are subject to the laws of the country our missionaries are sent into' etc. It was all legal maneuvering
my two cents

The Great "Dumbing Down"?
by NotFormer ina few old timers on here often refer to the dumbing down of the jw organisation.
what examples can you think of from over the years?
(i ask as an interested outsider who was never in).

What little printed material there may be is written at a third grade level.
Well put. One reason no doubt is that there are lots of JWs in the US who are approaching English as a second language. Despite that, the level of reading level required is very low.
Imagine going to a college level course and seeing that the textbook is written at the level of the current WT. You would probably walk out.

1974 and all that
by Number 6 inhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xznh9icm1os.
i came across this footage recently whilst searching for something completely unrelated and it blew me away!.
it's from the august 1974 convention at murrayfield, edinburgh and you can clearly see the stage set up still keeping the 6000 years and 1975 mantra going.. what makes this very personal for me is that i was here.

I've watched the film and can see the numbers going up to 7000 on the front of the podium.
What am l missing?Good question. As I recall, they were still teaching the chronology that 6000 years of man's existence, that is from the creation of Adam, was to end in 1975. The gentile times would end and usher in the next 1000 years (hence the '7000' on the platform) would be the Millenial reign. After that a perfect existence of eternity. The 7000 was the 7th creative day, and jived with the belief that each of the creative days was 7000 years long. All preposterous of course, but that is the chronology they inherited from the Russell days and still taught into the '70s.

Cool, shame they wasted so much footage on the lame dramas. More views of the audence would have been more interesting, looking back at it 50 years later.
I was at a convention in '74, don't recall where.

Followup:
The old Gilead building was apparently reused as the Lansing Residential Center, a sort of rehab facility for troubled youth (girls). The facility was shuttered in 2013 according to this article I found:
There is another complex of buildings very close by which is a secure prison. I'm not sure if the prison is on former WT land or if it just happens to be next door.
