Subject: Re: Tsunami
Dear Brothers,
So many of you have shown interest in the welfare of the brothers staying in the coastal areas affected by tsunamis this past
Sunday (Dec.26, 2004) ... emphasizing the truth expressed in our day's text today (Prov. 17:17). We are happy to report that to
the best of our knowledge none of our local brothers were hurt or lost their lives.
However we are sorry that we cannot say the same of our tourist brothers vacationing in these areas. Just a few minutes ago I
talked with Sister Renate Steinl from Austria, now in Bangkok, who was staying in Kao Lak (a resort very popular with
Europeans north of Phuket) with her husband who is also in the truth. She described how they were alerted by someone yelling
at the top of his voice, realizing that some terrible thing must have happened. So they ran out of the bungalow they were staying
in and soon saw the tsunami bearing in on them -- "higher than the trees" she described it. Of course they didn't get far before
being swept away... She survived, but so far we have no clue on what happened to her husband. So there is still hope that he is
found, though many people died in the resort area.
Just yesterday I got the glad news that a Sister from England who had a similar experience, was reunited with her (unbelieving)
husband who by some had been presumed dead already. Several ones of our brothers (including two special pioneers from
Switzerland and one from Britain who serve here in Thailand) are touring the area, looking up hospitals etc. and showing pictures
of the missing Austrian brother. It could be that he is severely injured or suffers from memory loss and thus was unable to make
contact himself ... however I personally rate the chances are rather slim that he will be found; hopefully I will be proven wrong in
this regard.
Then there is the Finish sister who also was separated from her husband. We were alerted by the brothers in Finland of her
ordeal. The brothers spent many hours till finally locating her in a hospital in Phangnga. She doesn't speak English (like the
Austrian sister) and needed help to explain her stand on blood. Finally she was operated on successfully without blood. Her
husband, a brother, is presumed dead--as far as I heard it. While still in the operating room our special pioneer phoned we
should select a hospital in Bangkok because she would be taken there with an ambulance shortly. I tried to arrange for that,
asking a Finish Sister (former missionary here) to be ready to receive her. Soon afterwards he phoned again, saying that no
ambulance was available (something I doubted from the very beginning), and that we should find one in Bangkok to get her (a
round trip of about 1,700 km). Government agencies said they couldn't help and I should try to find a private hospital who would
be willing to let us hire an ambulance... It finally turned out that it was agreed that she should be transported to nearby Phuket
and there a special plane from Finland would pick her up. Hopefully she is back in Finland now. I had so far no news on her
husband.
Now just as I am writing this email, I got a call from an elder from Krabi. He phoned yesterday telling us that a German couple
who had been vacationing at Kao Lak (the same resort mentioned above) hasn't been seen since and that he is worried that they
may have been victims of the tsunami. I spent a couple of hours yesterday trying to trace them (via many phone calls, Internet
searches), to no avail. Now he gives me the good news that some sister found their names on a list of those having been able to
return to their home countries. Thus one worry less.
Interestingly some Swedish Brothers went in the field service with the Phuket congregation on Sunday morning rather than
frolicking in the sea. It may have saved their lives as when they came back to their living quarters many cabins had been
destroyed by the huge waves. They thanked Jehovah that they had put his service first over enjoying swimming and sunning
themselves.
There are a number of other foreign brothers having atteded meetings but that have not been heard of since. At this stage we just
can't say what happened to them. Well, one thing we all can do is keeping our affected brothers in our prayers-- I am sure you
all will and already do. One positive aspect of the disaster is that surely people will here and elsewhere give more attention when
we quote Mt. 24:7 where it says about the time of the end that there will be "earthquakes in one place after another."
With much brotherly love,
Ernst

Does anyone watch Reno911! or MXC ?
by confusedjw inso i had never had cable or sat until this fall when i bought dish to watch my red sox, rather than to just listen on the porch with my trusty radio.. well now my son and i are hooked on these weird shows, reno 911!
and mxc.
does anyone else watch them or have i sunk to depths that are unspeakable?
-
NikL
Funny you should mention Reno 911.
One episode featured some JWs getting harrassed by the cops. They stopped them made them get on the ground and all...they said the matched the description of dangerous criminals or something. Really funny stuff.
Anyway, a few weeks after this episode the presiding overseer gave a talk mentioning this thing he saw from one of those cop shows. He thought it was real! I almost died laughing. I would think the comedy central logo in the lower right corner of the screen would have tipped him off that it was a joke. LOL -

The Da Vinci Code
by betty boop inwho has read this book?
im in the middle of it and its pretty good.
has some interesting information, although i wonder if anyone believes all the information in it.
-
NikL
I too am reading it. I just finished "Angels and Demons". It is the story of Robert Langdon prior to his adventure in the Da Vinci code. I would reccomend it highly. I am not sure if it all accurate after all it is a work of fiction. Still there are lots of interesting points that make me think that Charles T. Russell was an Illuminati or at least was familliar with their thinking. I wont go into great detail but according to the book, the illuminati are working for a new world order, one with no religion. They will eventually turn on religion. Sound famillliar? after reading this book I thought of all of the old pagan/Illuminati symbols that used to be in JW publications. I even found the word Jehovah listed in an old Occult symbols book and supposedly in the middle ages it was used in magic ceremonies. Long and short, after reading Da Vinci read Angels and Demons...or better yet read Angels and Demons first then you will understand the references to it in Da Vinci Code

Experience about not bringing our own food to the convention
by NikL inisn't this special?
this is an e mail making the rounds......
remember the letter that was read to all congregations regarding going out to get food during the break.
-
NikL
Isn't this special? This is an e mail making the rounds...... Remember the letter that was read to all congregations regarding going out to get food during the break.? My sister was at the convention this pass weekend and they said the brothers had met with the Cow Palace management and told them that a letter had been read to all the congregations about requesting the friends not to go out during the afternoon break and get food. Reason being is that the staff at cow palace want to open the concession stands and sell food, they figured McD's and KFC and other places are making all this money and they want in on it.. They had noticed that the brothers/sisters had been doing this for several years and wondered if they can't afford this then why are they going out to do it (that's why society lost all the other arenas due to management wanting to open concessions and sell food. (The Society said NO) Anyway, at this past weekend's convention, unbeknownst to the brothers, the management secretly went down to the various fast food places to see if the brothers/sisters obeyed and they were pleasantly shocked or surprised to learn that NOT ONE OF THE Witnesses had gone down during the break to get food. They went back and told the brothers what they had done and the managment said they were shocked! They could not believe that a letter had been read to all congregations and that everyone obeyed! Needless to say the brothers were so happy to hear that and are going to let the society know. What a great witness! So they want everyone to know what happened and hope and pray that at the next conventions to come, all the friends will do the same. Please let everyone know about this Sent as received in a message from Brother Ted Kaskaras

Watchtower and UN
by mkr32208 ini've read most of the topics on this (not all yet there are a lot!
) and tried to follow the links to the un site the message i got was that all the links were outdated.
i went on the un.org site and tried to find this info fom that end, i found the list of ngo's but "watchtower bible and blah blah whatever" wasn't on there!

As to the UN stuff. I think the dubs have been able to cover their tracks pretty well. As to a unbiased news source, you must remember there is no such thing outside of the org. It is all run by Satan and meant to mislead the faithful. Anything critical that is said about the org is a lie. That is how they think. I too have a faithful wife still in the org. I got out several years ago and it almost split us up. My advice to you is not to ride her too hard. She has to come to her conclusions about the org herself. If you force her she may have a moment of concience and decide that she isn't pleasing Jehovah in her current course and try to make a comeback. Anything can bring this on like a crisis of some sort. If that happens she may decide that it is you being used by Satan to try to stop her and she could very well take the kids and bolt. The elders would back her up saying it was spiritual endangerment. I think it helps to show her you are no worse than before by leaving and being busy and happy in your life. When she see's that, she may start to weaken in her clinging to the org. Sometimes a fade away is the best but if you force her to look at things she isn't ready to deal with it may do more harm than good. My wife is still a rart of things but she goes to a reletively liberal congregation and has lots of friends. Even me as an outsider inactive witness am exceepted by most of her friends even for social occasions. We are lucky in that because it could have gone much worse. My secret is to keep my thoughts of the org to myself and let them discreetly enquire once and a while and teven then really keep it light. I know they think about it later and maybe they will start their own inquires into the dark side of the witnesses. I realise I am rambling a bit but I read your post during a quiet moment at work and wanted to post to you.

Did You Ever Think That The Demons Were After You?
by minimus ini know so many jws that love to think satan and his demons are after them.
if they were being "persecuted", it was because of the devil and his demons.
if they got an ache or pain, it was because satan was trying to "discourage" them.......did you think the demons were trying to get you, too?
-
NikL
I remember having a copy of a record that I was sure was posessed. Actually took it out back and burned it. Too bad because it would probably be quite valuable now. My aunt told me whan I was planning on dropping our of the borg "The devil really got you".

I gotta go back to the mention of chess. I had never ever heard of that before so I just looked it up in the CD rom and indeed they did make a big deal about it at one time. The Awake from March 22 1973 had a rambling article that sums up this way... Then, too, grown-ups may not consider it proper for children to play with war toys, or at games of a military nature. Is it consistent, then, that they play a game noted to be, in the opinion of some, an ?intellectualized equivalent of the maneuvers enacted by little boys with toy soldiers?? What effect does playing chess really have upon one? Is it a wholesome effect? Surely chess is a fascinating game. But there are questions regarding it that are good for each one who plays chess to consider.
