What is the vow of poverty

i was told by someone that in 2007 two members of the branch committee in greece were removed because they breached the vow of poverty.

the matter was over a small amount, in the range of a few hundred euro.

is there a copy of this vow available and how would this be applied here?

Wasn't there something in that vow that stated IF they made outside money they were to turn it over to the WTBTS.

It's hard to believe this but it seems that I had read that somewhere.

so our sunday meeting was on the 25th (christmas) and my active jw wife and i were out of town enjoying some family time with relatives.. apparently there were many others in our congregation that missed as well.

so few were there in fact that sisters ran the mics.

(actually it was a sister running one of the two mics) a friend of my wife commented to her about how the brothers just aren't stepping up and it "makes her want to cry.

Jehovah does not get the red ass as much when seesters play a part due to being short handed on brothers.

Never could understand how it could be wrong one time but okay the next.

Similarly once they removed the book study from my house due to me not being a MS and they wanted this meeting to take place at a appointed brothers house.

Appointed MS was going on vacation and would not be able to host for that week so they asked if we could host just while he was away.

Anyone care to guess what answer i gave them? Bueller,....bueller,....

Why Finding the One True Religion is Impossible

jws like to think they have found the one true religion.

but like so many other religious people, it's usually the religion they were born into, the only religion they know because it's the first one they found or, at the most, one of two or three (typically the second one after they left their first / born-in faith).. the trouble is, there simply isn't enough time to explore and investigate each and everyone of the many thousands of belief systems, religions and sects around the world.. think of it this way: which is the best neighbourhood to live in where you would be most happy and most successful?

not just in the city or even the country you are in, but the entire world.. how would you ever know?

While I don't believe that there is a true religion. If there were, why would it be impossible for a person to find it? What if there was a true religion and this true religion was the first one that some came across?

Maybe it would not be possible for all or even many to find it but some could find it.

Jehovah God is Real

there are many on this site that do not believe that jehovah truly exists; that he is not a real being.

but, he is as real as next breath you draw into your nostrils.. some of you say that there is no evidence that he exists.

yet, none of you can prove that he does not exits.. cofty, (you come to mind), i appreciate that you have stated, without reservation, that you do not believe that god exists.. yet, you cannot prove it.. hope in jehovah..

He must be real because I read in the Bible that he loves the smell of burning fat in his nostrils. We humans have nostrils and we are real so by deduction this means Jehovah is also real.

Also the Bible is inspired because it says it in the Bible.

while i am not able to recall them all at this time, i remember so many instances that when a number was quoted in the bible, especially large numbers, they were all "rounded up" to the nearest hundred or thousand.

for instance the angel killed 185,000 syrians, not 184,879. sampson killed a thousand men with the jawbone of an ass, not 961. and on and on on the even rounded numbers.

i would guess that it could be agues that these numbers were correct but is that realistic?

The least of my issues with the bible is trying to find out how far apart the columns were that Sampson supposedly pushed to make the temple fall down. Ha, the rounded numbers are not far above this.

The reason that I think that this could be worthy is that it could help a person come to the conclusion that the bible itself is not REALLY inspired by an all knowing entity and that it COULD possibly be the writings of man.

If and when you can get a person to grasp that, you do not have to deconstruct the beliefs, doctrines etc from a Jw or other believer as if this is false, then what else could be false?

Its purely pointed at the claim for inspiration of the Bible.

I have plenty of other issues but this can be used at the right time with the right person, possibly.

I was meaning to find a way to argue that the bible is not inspired due to the, what I would call "not thinking ahead" far enough and just tossing out large numbers and letting them end on a very large round number.

I think that it could be a case of "Occams razor" where the simpler explanation could be true in that these were just made up numbers on the fly, as it were.

TO me, if the bible is actually inspired, numbers should be accurate. Did X own 30,000 silver shekels or did he not? Not one more or one less since it would not be accurate if not, then what else is not true, if this is not true?

To me it is easier to believe that the person writing this was just stating numbers off the cuff and that it is all bogus. Can this somehow be used to show a person that maybe the bible is not really inspired since if it is, these numbers would have to be accurate. The amount of silver pieces would have to been EXACTLY the correct number, not one more or one less. etc etc et,..

We know the Jws believe that each bible writer was inspired to write down the words in their book as it was somehow bestowed upon them via holy spirit. So Jehovah would know the actual numbers of silver, people killed etc and it would make sense that he would provide an accurate number instead of a inaccurate one, right? If that is true then these numbers would have to be spot on. Sampson would have had to kill exactly 1000 men, not one less or one more as if that were the case, the bible would not be inspired.

If someone were to argue that these things don't REALLY matter then where do you draw the line with being inspired and accurate and when you are just throwing out numbers?

having watched many jc youtube videos one question that gets asked is "where else would you go?".

in other words if not jehovah's witnesses then what other religion or organisation would you go to?.

it's one that i have trouble answering, what would you say?.

It think that they are basically asking "If this is not the truth, then what is?" "What will I use to fill that place in my thoughts that were occupied by the WTBTS teachings, since i have been taught that every other belief is false"

And that is a fair question to ask coming from a person who's entire belief system is teetering on the edge.

A person does not have to know what is right to know when something is wrong. Does a battered woman have to know where she is going to sleep tonight to know she is being beaten now?

Does a person in a burning house not leave the house because they do not know where they will sleep tonight?

To me, it does not have to be a instantaneous exchange from one belief to another. You find out what you currently believe is wrong and get out,.. then start to slowly look for what is right.
