Simon,
It seems the quote function isn't working properly for me on my end.
I am going to highlight this sentence and push the quote button.
Nope, didn't work.
Just a head's up.
PS: I am running the latest Chrome on Mac OSX 10.9.5.

i've been out of the religion for a little while now but my family is still "strong in the truth".
i got a call today asking if i could stop by to have a discussion.
they just had their circuit assembly and this is typically when they decide to talk to me, while they're spiritually energized hah.
any hints of how I shall endure it?
Get an e-reader and read Sci-Fi novels or Richard Dawkins all day?
this is a real conversation i had with a jw friend last night.
several times previously he claimed to be a certified genius, having supposedly passed the mensa test.... .
me: so what do you think about jws condoning the idea that dinosaurs could have lived with humans?.
Let me guess, Bloody Hotdogs!, he was born a JW?
Genius has nothing to do with knowledge, it has to do with intelligence.
I know plenty of intelligent individuals that have weird, irrational beliefs because of a fear of exploring beyond their comfort zone.
I had to have a psych evaluation about 15 years ago and scored over 145 on an actual, non-online, Stanford Binet IQ test given by a psychologist. That's adequate for Mensa, I believe. (Or someone told me)
But, I still believed the JW bull crap because I never went to college and never wanted to or learned to use my critical thinking skills on my own beliefs.
a couple years back my hall had around 12 elders, and the body was literally divided into little factions of elders(gotta love jehovah's holy spirit !).
the branch sent 2 more elders to help resolve the issues between them, and that didn't help at all.. so when the circuit overseer visited, a meeting was held after the sunday meeting.
i waited in the hall by myself since the rest of my family was out of town for a certain family event.
I was like the OP. I was the guy waiting on my Dad to get out of his elder's meetings.
For as long as I can remember, my dad was the PO/C.O.B.E. of every congregation we were involved with. He was a real stickler for time. So even if the issue wasn't resolved, he stuck to the 2-hour "rule" and would adjourn the meeting once two hours went by.
the awake!
january 1 1989 contains the quote on page 12 "he was laying a foundation for a work that would be completed in our 20th century.
" this was later changed in the bound volume and on the cd library to "in our day.".
I know it's not the subject of this thread, but I also actually have access to the 1969 bound volume that contains the article on not growing old in this system of things. It belongs to my dad. Read that passage myself a few weekends ago.
so i joined very recently and began posting and commenting without a formal intro.
been reading for a while, decided it was time to jump in.
mentally i am completely cleansed of this thing, but still have to maintain a minimal involvement for spouse and family.
Just realized I never gave you a proper welcome.
I see that we're in similar circumstances.
If it weren't for my wife, I would just fade completely and stop attending immediately.
My family and mom & Dad would still talk to me so long as I wasn't DA'd or DFd.
Welcome!

RE: Lack of joy in the congregations.
MESSAGE: Please write more songs about joy and happiness. If the congregations sing enough about happiness and joy, then they will think they are happy and joyful and that will solve all our issues.
Please be assured of our warm Christian love.

Lyrics below:
What a joy to teach Jehovah’s sheep
And to see how they have grown.
We have seen how he has guided them
As they’ve made the truth their own.
(CHORUS)
Jehovah, may you hear our prayer
And keep them in your watchful care.
In Jesus’ name, for them we plead: May they succeed;
May ev’ry one of them stand firm.
Ev’ry day we said a prayer for them,
As their faith was under test.
We made time to teach and care for them;
They’ve grown strong, and they’ve been blessed.
(CHORUS)
Jehovah, may you hear our prayer
And keep them in your watchful care.
In Jesus’ name, for them we plead: May they succeed;
May ev’ry one of them stand firm.
May they all maintain their confidence,
Trust in God and in his Son.
Through endurance and obedience,
May their race for life be won.
(CHORUS)
Jehovah, may you hear our prayer
And keep them in your watchful care.
In Jesus’ name, for them we plead: May they succeed;
May ev’ry one of them stand firm.

By all means, scans of magazines are great.
But video of a physical magazine or bound volume being opened and then showing the passage has more effect, in my opinion.
It's easy to photoshop scans of magazines. Not so easy at all to alter a video of a physical copy.
