I shunned my sister when she left and was a known smoker. I was pressured by my (ex)wife. I gave in and shunned my sis. Not long after, she and my other sister disappeared. I did not see or hear from my sisters for about 2 years. I didn't know if they were alive or dead. It pained me to know that my last act between me and my sister was the harshness of shunning a family member. Eventually, I reconnected with both of my sisters. I then learned that during those intervening years, my sister had gotten pregnant, had a child, and put her up for adoption. I felt (and still feel) nothing but shame and sadness at my conduct back then. Here, my own flesh and blood was on the run from an abusive man, pregnant with a child and then going through the pain of adopting out a child with no family support whatsoever. It's one of my biggest regrets in life. I will never forgive them for putting my family in thiat spot.

Did you ever shun someone close? How did you feel?
by jean-luc picard inhow does a jw feel when he "has" to shun someone he likes/loves?.
during the time i was in, i shunned people.
but as i didn't like them, it was no problem.. but now, i'm trying to understand how my family might really feel.. (i presume here, of course, that they do "like/love me".).

Alice in Chains - Man in a box. - Deny your maker-
I'm on the fence with Chop Suey - by System of a Down. Not sure exactly what he's trying to say. Also Toxicity by the same band. I don't think he has much tolerance toward Christianity or faith, from an interview I saw of him once.
I can't think of another at the moment, off the top of my head. There are a few more though.
Really? How do those question God or talk bad about him? I'm a bit confused.

Any suggestions for legitimate work at home jobs?
by coffee_black inmy daughter may need this.
since she has heart failure, she may not be able to go back to work, because her dr. has placed her on a 5 lb lifting restriction.
her company has held her job open for her since the end of november, but will not agree this restriction.. she has applied for disability, but since her dr would allow her to work at all (dispite strict restrictions) she has been told that they will not likely approve her.... so she is caught between a rock and a hard place.

I still do mystery shops too, from time to time. It doesn't pay well, but it does buy a bit of gasoline. The only thing is that you do have to travel and use your own vehicle. Also, some shops require photos or videos. A good memory and the ability to accurately recount details are the most important qualifications.

Were you ever the subject of a ''Local needs'' talk???
by karter inapperantly there was one in my old congro as my neice (baptized ,but inactive) is marring her livein boy freind.. .

My sister was the subject because of the way she chose to dress while she was in high school. Today, she'd be considered "goth lite." They went on and on about choice of clothing being a relfection on Jehoober. It was very apparent that the talk was about her. They were mad because, while her dress was not immodest - even by their terms - she wouldn't give an inch. The local needs talk was a power play both by the elders and by my Dad, who was losing control over her.

charity project vrs jw project
by seenitall ini have been doing several charity projects lately and weighed the differences between doing them and volunteering on jw projects.
.
1. jw projects - so many rules on what to wear, no creative personal input asked for, no real signs of true appreciation for giving efforts, general laziness of many volunteers, power & ego trips of overseers, no real recognition for sacrifices made.. 2. worldly events - recognition, true feelings expressed openly by many, creative expressions encouraged, no power struggles on who is in charge, free giving and acceptance of any effort given for the cause.. 3. the demonizing of the charity or project as worldly and worthless by the org / jw.. 4. slander, backbiting and gossip spread if any jw does any worldly charity work.. 5. my observation was that i felt refreshed, respected and yes - even loved more doing these projects a hundredfold more than over 40 years slaving on rbc, kh, bethel and other jw projects.. anyone else having exp or comments?.

I have found, since leaving the dubs, that charity work helps me feel fullfilled. I can't emphasize enough how important charity work is to me. It was one of the things that I felt as glaringly lacking in the JW organization. I am glad to now be able to share in working with charities without thoughts of what others might think about it.

help appreciated...any success or failures at truly conscious efforts to make new friends after a life in jwland? As a very social person i still only seem to have ex-dubs as my new friends...
by oompa inas a jw...at least if you were social...you could walk into about any hall and find other social jw's you could become friends with...yes they are conditional...perhaps more so than other friends, but i did have some great friends there and i still miss them.
since my wake up....then departure....now df status....i realize that i have had only seven or so real friends and five were found here..... five are fairly local, one is far away, and one is an old high school friend i have reconnected with (lives a thousand miles away).....and i have met some nice people through these friends but they are more aquaintances than close friends.
the bar scene did not really get me anywhere with guys or girls...and i tried meetup.com but as of yet have not connected with anyone....so what worked for you?

I do get along quite well with my colleagues at work, and I do enjoy the occasional social interaction with them. I found some great company when I joined a car club. I took a hobby that I enjoyed and found others who enjoy it too. Kind of like church...only cheaper. I made a couple of really good friends in a place where I previously knew noone. It could certainly work for you as well. I found it was up to me to get out and enjoy life and meet new people.

This brings to mind what happened when my mom was in her last months....the JW sisters really tried to be there for her to help with watching after her. Those sisters showed some real fellow feeling for mom and a sense of human kindness that reflects the best that humans have to offer. However, Mom's coworkers were also there for her. On several occasions, her whole department came to visit her at the hospital and even made a few excursions to my house to have lunch with her. To me, it was a testament, not of people's devotion to an invisible sky voyeur; rather, it was a testament to how well my Mom related to people and the positive impact that she had on their lives. For those women from the Kingdom Hall who helped Mom, it's proof positive that - no matter what their religion may have been, they would have shown such kindness.

Crimes committed by JWs
by Black Man inhey all, i'm still embroiled in my ongoing debate w/a few jw's and now we're on this tangent where they are saying that jws are the most peaceful and law abiding people in comparison to other religious people.
i said that's not true, there's been many news articles that detail various crimes committed by jws.
i couldn't find anything right away when i did a google search, so can someone point me to some threads or links that contain recent and past articles of jw's in trouble w/the law or who have committed crimes?.

I used to always think of Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory - but now, it's Stuart McKenzie that comes to mind!
