I'm going to approach my family about the Witnesses. I may only get one shot at this, so it'll have to be good. Something short, fast, and effective, but with the possibility of further growth. Any ideas?

The demographic: 2 elderly parents, 50 years as witnesses, including missionary work. Older brother and sisiter, dyed in the wool witnesses, now married with kids.

Me: Was good witness 'till I just walked away from it all 7 years ago, which of course required dropping all family ties.

They respect me now, but I don't know what will happen when I start to get into Witness stuff. I don't have much time to come up with something, so I thought I'd appeal to The Board for input. Any ideas/experiences? -J

hmmm... good points. Now that you mention it, I do remember living off wild roots and grasses from time to time, and heard about the occasional Do-Not-Call-roasted-corpse break. Nice correlation gopher.

The First Crusade is launched by Pope Urban II. His goal is to aid Byzantine Christians in driving the Seldjuk Turks from Asia Minor, in the (futile) hope that the eastern Church would acknowledge the supremacy of Rome and Christendom would be united.

The poor were particularly susceptible to the Pope's call for an army. Most of those who joined the Crusade perished on the long journey across Europe. Those whose survived the trip were known as "Tafurs." Stories describe them as barefoot, wearing sackcloth, covered in sores and filth, living on roots and grass and sometimes the roasted corpses of their enemies. Too poor to afford swords, they fought with clubs, pointed stick, knives, shovels, and hoes. The Muslims were said to have been terrified of the Tafurs, and their own leaders unable to control them. As they move across Europe, they attack and kill Jews in large numbers, believing them enemies of Christianity.

has anyone ever started a section just for legal cases/ possible legal cases?

or how about naming all the corrupt/ horror story jws you ever knew?

is it possible to get sued for telling your experiences and naming names - even if its not about criminal activity?

i was blown away reading about the un and the 'library card' excuse.

but i have a question: why did they join?

was it to lift restrictions in banned countries?

Thanks for the links hawkaw! You did a lot of work. I'll see when I have time to mull through the archives.

I'm going to surmise that the WTS's ultimate defense will be that it was the lesser of two evils. Joining allowed many more to 'hear the message' and eased persecution. Claiming divine guidance is the cure-all. It's an un-falsafiable defense, AKA fairy tale. It's nice to have that deux ex machina card in your back pocket for arguments. However, this brings up questions like, "Well couldn't a special pioneer or one of the anointed salute the flag or some other 'formality' so as to more effectively spread the word in some situations? Not to mention the massacres based on "no party card policy".

Hmmm-

Dutchie: I'm afraid they may go no farther than that for many, just stories. If there is a name(s) then its possible to verify. On the internet its possible for anyone to print anything, including half-truths, complete fabrications, and Troll-ramblings. But thanks for the interest in the stories anyway ;-).

Swan: That's a possibility, but I believe the greater good generated from a database of dangerous and/or manipulative people would be worth it. Besides, if it's true, the person will have a chance to defend themselves properly. A swirling mass of stories that may never get clarity or answers or conformation seems less desirable. I can't quite see someone 'mooting' the WTS information here because of their own personal unethical behavior in the past. Someone might return to the cult because of their own bad behaviour? Those seem like seperate issues. But thanks for the comments Tammy!
