A shipowner was about to send to sea an emigrant-ship. He knew that she was old, and not overwell built at the first; that she had seen many seas and climes, and often had needed repairs. Doubts had been suggested to him that possibly she was not seaworthy. These doubts preyed upon his mind, and made him unhappy; he thought that perhaps he ought to have her thoroughly overhauled and and refitted, even though this should put him at great expense. Before the ship sailed, however, he succeeded in overcoming these melancholy reflections. He said to himself that she had gone safely through so many voyages and weathered so many storms that it was idle to suppose she would not come safely home from this trip also. He would put his trust in Providence, which could hardly fail to protect all these unhappy families that were leaving their fatherland to seek for better times elsewhere. He would dismiss from his mind all ungenerous suspicions about the honesty of builders and contractors. In such ways he acquired a sincere and comfortable conviction that his vessel was thoroughly safe and seaworthy; he watched her departure with a light heart, and benevolent wishes for the success of the exiles in their strange new home that was to be; and he got his insurance-money when she went down in mid-ocean and told no tales.
What shall we say of him? Surely this, that he was verily guilty of the death of those men. It is admitted that he did sincerely believe in the soundness of his ship; but the sincerity of his conviction can in no wise help him, because he had no right to believe on such evidence as was before him. He had acquired his belief not by honestly earning it in patient investigation, but by stifling his doubts. And although in the end he may have felt so sure about it that he could not think otherwise, yet inasmuch as he had knowingly and willingly worked himself into that frame of mind, he must be held responsible for it.
Let us alter the case a little, and suppose that the ship was not unsound after all; that she made her voyage safely, and many others after it. Will that diminish the guilt of her owner? Not one jot. When an action is once done, it is right or wrong for ever; no accidental failure of its good or evil fruits can possibly alter that. The man would not have been innocent, he would only have been not found out. The question of right or wrong has to do with the origin of his belief, not the matter of it; not what it was, but how he got it; not whether it turned out to be true or false, but whether he had a right to believe on such evidence as was before him.
So, what the hell!?! Why doesn't anyone stand up and tell witnesses what they think?! I mean come on. This wishy-washy 'its all ok because its a religious belief' attitude just doesn't wash. Why don't more of you confront? If everyone took that attitude, nothing good would get done.

help an ex fundie understand
by wonderer inthis is my first posting , even though i've started to at least 7 times.
i've been reading this forum for 3 months trying to understand how jw's live their lives away from the work environment and how it affects their life decisions.
i'll explain why i need to know in the rest of the post.

WOW! onacruse and brummie are bang on. And I KNOW exatazo will not take up D8TA's offer- because it's totaly true. According to the authors own supposed beliefs, the author will die a terrible death very soon for being here. Exatazo speaks falsehoods- the author is taking sensitive issues and twisting them- like a child molester that stalks child abuse survivour web sites. AKA troll.
Anyway- after that rude interuption- I hope it all works out with the friend. My 2 cents is to talk about whatever, but if you do sense any aprehension about any religious-conected issue, back off laughing and say, "well I'm just a silly person who doesn't know much". Lighten it up. Life and time may loosen her up.

Probing Questions
by Farkel inthere have been a whole bunch of probing questions in new threads lately.
people are encouraged to spill their guts out on the most sensitive of topics including jeopardizing their identities with questions about what they like on their pizzas.
just call me old fashioned, but some of these polls look like information-gathering the wts would love to mine.

What!?! Are you serious? The WT HQ monitors this board? And what threads specifically are from lawyers? I find this hard to believe. I like you Farkel, but are you paranoid?

Were your JW parents spirtually weak or strong?
by moreisbetter ini was a 3rd generation witness on both sides of the family.
even my great-grandomthers were considered witnesses, but i don't know if they were baptized.
my parents however were always considered weak and still are even though my mom has become more involved & for longer periods of time in the last 15 yrs.

Very fanatical.
They joined in the 50s. I remember all the stories about many frineds , including our godparents, who fell away over the years and were never contacted again. That must nurture a bridge burning mentality. I even remeber getting locked out of the house on Sunday morning, and them driving away, because I said I didn't want to go to the meeting. I was five years old! They did come back for me though. Too strong.

Did you ever get put on the spot?
by Soledad inby that i mean from the platform at the kingdumb hall?
i remember some study conductors who had the habit of calling on people in the audience that seemed distracted or unprepared--on purpose so as to embarass them.
some were so out of it when the mic was handed to them they had to ask what was the question, why did you call on me i didnt have my hand up, etc.

ya, my firends' dad stopped his sunday talk in the middle, said "excuse me brothers", walked off the stage and slapped his two boys in the face (for talking), then got back up and resumed the hour talk.
