One correction, Van. Rutherford was not living alone in HIS mansion. There were two others with him:
Bonnie Boyd who was 31 years old, single and worked as a servant.
Donald Haslett who was 34 years old, married and worked as a servant.
(According to the 1930 Federal census)
(Interestingly enough, Hasletts' wife was back in Brooklyn Bethel)
Much has been written here about a possible relationship between Rutherford and Bonnie. I wouldn't put anything past him.
In the 1930 Federal census he is listed as owner of the house and as an interesting side note it was the most EXPENSIVE house in the neighborhood by far.
