When did Battle of Carchemish take place?
by badboy inthere's a very good question to stump a jw(hope i have spelled the place right?!).
it says in my niv study bible it toke place c.609 bc so therefore the fall of jerusalem toke place approxiametly(sic)20 years later according to the bible.. if you say carchemish toke place in 627,`can you provide evidence of this?
' might be a good question to a jw.

Analysis of anti-607 BCE Rebuttals
by Ethos ini agreed yesterday to engage in the '607' topic.
i've read numerous threads and am well aware that this topic has been addressed and dissected quite thoroughly.
therefore, if you are uninterested in participating, that's fine.

i've read the whole 22pages, i already had my mind made up on this subject.
during my own research over the last 12mths I read all the info on jehovahsjudgements.co.uk/607 , you know the one that looks like an old scroll.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ethos/Recovery had input in the content of that site. same style of arguments. unable to see any other opinion but their own because otherwise, it means this religion is built on a false date, that is now a propogated lie, as many have genuinely written to the society to see if they are aware of this error, where they learn later that they do in fact know about 586/7 being the correct date and 607 is just so wrong, as can be seen from this thread.
but to hell with that.
we are the FDS/GB - Listen Obey Be Blessed
they say they take the scriptures over problematic and changing secular scholars, when in fact a direct reading of the whole subject shows they interpreted it wrong. instead of using history to help there understanding, what the JW's have done is just make it fit, poorly. it's stupid.
Battle of Carchemish for example, the book that is used for the Congregation Bible Study™ is 'God's Word For Us Through Jeremiah' pg24 par 17 says:
"In 625B.C.E., the Babylonians and Egyptians fought a decisive battle at Carchemish.... King Nebuchadnezzer vanquished Pharaoh Necho's forces ending Egyptian power in the region. (Jer. 46:2)"
King Neb in Carchemish 625? It was 605. He was not a King yet. Why no mention of the Assyrians?
for any Lurkers viewing this thead, here is a 'Non-Appostate' way of checking any history or just anything in general.. i mean anything.. not just religion

WT Elders school: Avoid black and white thinking - now look at this zebra
by sir82 incontinuing on with my haphazard review of the recent one-day elders school..... in one of the introductory talks, the co was making the point that we can't view things merely from a black and white perspective.
many issues have "shades of gray" and we need to use discernment in such situations.. and i'm thinking "finally!
maybe he will continue on to make an actual, reasonable point!".

Independent Thinking
by Jeffro ini decided to do a search of the watchtower library cd on the phrase 'independent thinking'.
only three times is it ever spoken of as being a good thing.
and those three instances are quite telling about the insidiousness of all of the other times that jw publications consider independent thinking to be such a bad thing.. .

love this from alamb's above post, I get the drinker>thinker. very very clever
The Recovering Thinker
Hi, my name is Bob, and I am a recovering thinker….
It started out innocently enough: I began thinking at meetings now and then to loosen up. Inevitably though, one thought led to another and soon I was more than just a theocratic thinker. I began to think alone, you know, “to relax,” I told myself, but I knew it wasn’t true.
Thinking became more and more important, and finally I was thinking all the time. I even thought at the Kingdom Hall. I knew thinking and my position in the congregatin didn’t mix, but I couldn’t stop. I began avoiding the friends at lunchtime so I could read Crisis of Conscience and other works that challenged my thought processes. I returned to the Kingdom Hall dizzied and confused, asking, “What exactly are we doing here?”
Things weren’t great at home either. One evening I turned off the TV and asked my wife about the meaning of life guided by the FDS—she spent the night at her mother’s.
I soon had a reputation as a heavy thinker. One day the PO called me into the back room and said, “Bob, I like you, and it hurts me to say this, but your thinking is a real problem. If you don’t stop thinking, I’ll have to recommend you be disfellowshipped.” This gave me a lot to think about.
I went home early after my conversation with the elder. “Honey,” I confessed, “I’ve been thinking.”
“I know you’ve been thinking,” she said, “and I want a divorce.”
“But Honey, surely it’s not that serious.”
“It is serious,” she said, lower lip quivering. “You have been a fine window washer all your life and your service to Jehovah comes before the children and I having health insurance or educations.”
“That’s faulty syllogism,” I said impatiently, and she began to cry. I’d had enough. “I’m going to the library to look up what really happened in 607/587,” I snarled and stomped out the door. I headed to the library in the mood for enlightenment, roared into the parking lot, and ran up to the big glass doors—they didn’t open. The library was closed.
To this day I believe Jehovah was looking out for me that night. As I sank to the ground clawing at the unfeeling glass, whimpering for a computer with an internet connection to feed my starving mind, a magazine caught my eye; a Watchtower left in a laundromat. The words “Friend, is heavy thinking ruining your life?” stood out in large letters. You may recognize the line: it comes from the standard issue “Thinkers Anonymous” poster.
Today, I am a recovering thinker. I never miss a meeting . At each meeting we listen to a non-educational, self congratulatory public talk. I am again training my mind to be numb. Then we share experiences about how we avoided thinking since the last meeting. I still have my family and things are a lot better at home. Life just got easier, somehow, once I stopped thinking.
Soon, I’ll be able to be an elder again….
Thanks, Bob

New FDS understanding just a publicity stunt for new JW.ORG website?!?
by Gorbatchov ini read this weekend many reactions on my own posting about "we just love this idea" and also the topics of cedars and metatron about the new understanding of the fds doctrine and stop the printing facility's.. today i can not oppress the feeling that the new fds understanding is just a publicity stunt just to make jw.org famous and usefull for the rank-and-file jw's.. how to get attention for the new publishing channel jw.org to replace the use of hardcopy magazines?!?
just release a new understanding of an important doctrine @ jw.org.

i swear when he let it go that kid hovered.
brought the house down with laughter and got a crack off his dad. poor kid

Faith vs Faiths - the Bible vs the WBTS
by Fernando ina search of the wt library 2010 for the word "faiths" produces 211 hits.. yet the bible always refers to "faith" in the singular.. articles such as "only one right religion" (w55 2/15 pp.
112-116) also reveal that the wbts believes that "faith" and "religion" (beliefs and practices) are the same thing.. why then is "religion" not a fruit of the holy spirit?.
as others have observed "belief" emanates from man, whereas "faith" emanates from god.. a person does not receive the gift of "faith" from the holy spirit by choosing to follow the ruling religious clergy class of a particular denomination.. nor does faith result from doctrinal dissection and interpretations (such as on hellfire, trinity, immortality of the soul, and fds).. nor does faith result from rule-making and rule-keeping (apostate legalism according to ray franz).
