Pmljohn,Congratulations to you and your siblings for escaping the cult. So glad you are able to block out the bad and live happily ever after. Just curious, do your uber Dub parents shun you? Are they ashamed that their efforts to bring you up in the "dicipline and mental regulating" (brainwashing) failed?

The WT$ flipped flopped on the application of the scriptures advocating the use of the "rod" because and ONLY because they were essentially FORCED to by "Ceaser". Neighbors living near KHs started calling the police when they would hear the screams of babies and children being hit. The police started showing up at the meetings and arresting the accused parents. Announcements started to be made at the KH "Parents please stop taking your children outside to be spanked. The loud noise is disturbing the neighbors. Instead take them to the library or the restroom to spank them" I heard the announcements with my own ears.
In time some JW children starting confiding in teachers, councilors, and the police about their abuse. The parents were "bringing reproach on the organization". The heat was on -public opinion mattered to the GB. Then, and ONLY then, did they officially change their message.

Dubs badmouthing children
by rebel8 ini was remembering the 1980s when it was in vogue to shun children.
they went through a fad when they'd call unbaptized excommunication as "disassociation".
within a short period of time, most of the teens and preteens were "disassociated" or disfellowshipped.

I had shirtail relatives this happened to. They were brothers whose parents had a bitter divorce and cutody battle. They were kidnapped and taken to another country for at least 7 years until the FBI eventually got involved and returned them to the USA. By this time they were understandably very mixed up teens. They got caught breaking a decrative light in front of a subdivision. They were arrested and ordered to pay restatution. Their names were read off the platform and they were shunned.
The guidence councilor at their school was furious that their church would use shunning instead of trying to help. He wondered why there were no youth groups or any other assistance efforts made.
Needless to say they are not JWs anymore.

Yes, rebel8, I remember all too well! Almost all those I can think of are out now. I wonder how many unbabtized teens who were treated this way remained. I'll bet not many.

Have You Ever Spoken To An Elder About Your True Feelings About "The Truth"?
by minimus ini've has conversations with certain elder friends but i never gave them a total pummeling, at least i haven't yet.. what about you?.

My father was an Elder before they were called that. (Congregation Servant) I knew better than to express any doubts to him. He made it plain he would have disowned me the way he had already done to my 1/2 brother.
Both my husbands were or became Elders during our marriage. I was a true believer during their time as such. I saw hypocracy and favoritism galore in the Borg but chocked it up to "imperfection". I told my husbands of my feelings but never any other Elder. It turns out that both of my husbands quit the position.
Ex husband quit because he hated how the other Elders behaved in committee meetings-especially involving young sisters. They asked accusitory and lurid questions. He said it was obvious that they had no interest in helping anyone. they only wanted dirt- the dirtier the better.
Second hubby was a newly appointed Elder when we married. Soon, he too, became dissilusioned over the way pedophilia was handled. We had 3 in our cong. They were all ingood standing, commented to beat the band, and their moronic wives stayed with them and gave these bastards their full support!
Sooooo.. in my case the Elders came to ME with THEIR true feelings about "the Truth" Both knew more about the ugly underbelly of the Borg than I did as a Rank and File sister. Both Elders left the Watchtower BEFORE I did.

No wonder so many Elders I know are Ass$%!s Instructions like question #9 foster a complete lack of empathy. No wonder so many of the decent sort have left the Borg in disgust.

I failed to say what it was like to be raised a JW. I realize the answer depends on who one's parents are, how they were raised, what kind of personality they have and most of all how strictly they followed the rules and advice of the Watchtower and its leaders.
In my case, my father was raised by a harsh alcoholic father and a JW mother. He in turn took his mothers religion and and his fathers habits and beat the snot out of me from infancy. My mother was less harsh but fully dedicated to the religion. She took every oppertunity to drag me out in the witness work with almost no breaks. This was in the 1950's when corporal punishment was strongly encouraged by the society. My dad was a dictator in our house and verbally abused my mother. My mother in turn didn't love him and never missed an oppertunity to publically and privately show him. Nothing was ever good enough for her and she was NEVER happy. She only showed approval of me if I said or did or looked EXACTLY as she wished. She regularly told me as a young child that if we would have been living in Isrealite times I would have been stoned. I did my level best to be a good little witness girl because it was crystal clear their love depended on it.
School... awful!!! I attended 13 schools in various towns because my dad would get a wild hair that they needed a kh. Lucky me, I got to be the new JW kid over and over. I was the ONLY JW in most of the schools and with no brothers and sisters I was truely on my own. My father died when i was in HS. Left alone with my mother I accepted the marriage proposal I got at 16 and married at 17just to get out of the CONTROL.
