OC, thanks for the story. I would love to see a wedding picture of these two. I'll bet they looked like movie stars! I've said this before, and I'll say it again, many JWs are lovely loving people who are simply deceived. This couple appears to be that kind. My grandparents were married almost 70 years. They died within 6mos of each other. My theory is that aside from both being old, very long married couples die within a short period of time because they simply loose the will to live once the other has died.

Crazy JW chaperon Stories
by superman inthe jw's must not trust their members or at least don't have too much faith in them when it comes to being alone around member of the opposite sex.
i can remember one time in particular from when i was a teenager that still makes me laugh today.. when i was younger i used to go out in service on a regular basis during the week when i had summer break.
one time when i met for service there were only two other people that showed up.

I totally agree that the borg is OBSESSED with sex. I started dating in the late 60's before the emphasis of dating being only for marriage and the admonition of chaperones. I dated a handful of guys aged 16-21. We went to witness parties, picnics, all day outings on the beach, out to dinner, movies etc. The only chaperones were at the parties. Yes, we spent some time making out but I was a virgin when I married and so were my boyfriends. HOWEVER, I married at 17 because my boyfriend wanted to have sex and there was no other acceptable way. Fast forward 30 years. I am a scripturely free woman in my late 40's. An Elder wants to have a cup of coffee with me but we can't because my divorce was held up and not yet final! After it was final he bought me a hamberger at the CA. The whole cong was buzzing that we were a couple........because of ONE HAMBERGER????!!!! We couldn't sit together at the meetings until we were engaged.....wtf? What is anyone going to do in their seats at the KH? And how would being engaged change anything that happens in your seat? Ridiculous Idiotic cult!!!!

One of the situations that woke us up to TTATT was the situation with my son. Very long story short: Son(in mid teens) leaves my home, moves in with ex JW father when Elder hubby and I marry. Son leaves father, goes off to college and decides he wants to study to be a JW. Being active JWs at the time we are thrilled and try to arrange for a study- NOBODY would do it. Son graduates, moves in with us and again we try to get someone to study with him. NOT ONE Elder or MS would do it. Hubby studys with stepson but there is friction. Son has accident and dies. All show up at the funeral home (wouldn't let us use KH) Hubby asks for help with some chores. NOBODY would help!!! ALL hubby's and my family are JWs. NOT ONE would help. So much for JW love.

How does TTATT affect your marriage??
by Crazyguy injust wondering of those of you that have left or are fading and have married ones still in, how is it going, is there hope or is the marriage doomed?
wondering what are the percentages.
i'm fading fast but wife is zealous as ever and we don't talk spiritual things at all anymore.

The is a reason for the legal term " irreconcilable differences." Sometimes all the kings horses and all the kings men can't put the marriage back together again. Then it becomes best to make a clean break and try to shed the bitterness and be open to a new (*usually better) relationship. My 1st husband was Dfed twice while i was still a true believer. He had once been an elder but over time became a non believer. I admit i lost respect for him over it. However, it was the repeted adultry that actually ruined the marriage. Still we went to a marriage councilor to see if our shattered marriage could be saved. Nope! But I could sleep at night knowing every effort was made. Marriage councilors (contrary to the Watchtower) are helpful and actually strive to help save marriages where possible. If not, they help you leave without guilt and less anger.

JW family trying to compensate for us being "spiritually weak" through increased activity
by cedars inhi folks.
one of the things that has been most frustrating for my wife and i since beginning our fade as been the way certain family members have responded by ramping up their own involvement in the organization seemingly in a bizarre attempt to compensate for our lack of activity.. close relatives who were once doing precious little study and weren't going out of their way to attend meetings or go on the ministry are now studying every morning and busting a gut to attend "theocratic" arrangements.. it makes no sense to me, because salvation is supposed to be based on the beliefs and actions of each individual, not on those of his or her loved ones.
just what is the logic by which they think they can make things better by doing more themselves?.

An additional thought...... The WBT$ repetedly asserts that study (of THEIR publications), meetings, and field service are the way to keep oneself "strong in the troof" In a way they are right. That busywork usually makes a person too busy and tired to research or even think. It keeps one in almost a hypnotic state where opposing thoughts (no matter how reasonable) simply cant penetrate.

Julia O, beat me to the comment. This increased activity is born of FEAR. The WTBT$ pounds fear into it's followers. Not only does the friend or realitive fear they could also "succumb to Satans designs", they want to set a "Good example" for the wayward loved one to hopefully imitate.

Who Taught You The Truth(tm) OR Who Counted Time, On You?
by LoisLane looking for Superman inmy mom's lover would bring his handsome youngest son, to our house, and along with my dad, would study with my brother, sister and i. wed 7 pm.. next an elder's wife, who was a regular pioneer and worked part-time, who had a daughter my age, came to our house, after school wed. ruth was the head of the house and wore the pants.
her husband was part of the 3 men who sat on all judicial committees in our congo and would tell ruth everything, which in turn ruth would tell the sister's.
ruth was very pious but at the age of 15 gave birth to her only child, and beat on her daughter all the time, never letting her forget what "trouble" her only daughter caused her.

Wow Lois, You were passed around like a cracker at the memorial! What a coincidence that I know some of the family of the "lover". I once posted about a pious nosy sister who cornered me at a store. Among other things, she hinted that her JW family was disfunctional . Would she be mortified if she knew I have smelled some of her dirtiest family laundry???!!!! As for me, my mom started studing with me pre-school in the really old Let God be True book. It was torture. The orange "Paradise book came out when I was six and then she swiched to that. Her version of the "truth" was not "happifying". My father conducted the "family study" once a year right afterthe DC had guilted fathers into it. His version consisted of pounding his fist on the table after my mother would say something insulting to him. Mom and dad played out their power struggle wrapped in religion for about an hour whereupon would go to my room and cry. I was baptized at 12 before the questions were asked of the canadates.

EVERYTHING you always wanted to know about shunning, excommunication and disfellowship practice

what was disfellowship policy?.

My Father was friends with Knorr so he was all for the DF policy. Dad happily shunned his Dfed brother for at least 20 years until he died. I find the Covington aspect to be a DING DING DING bell ringer for me. DFing was obviously a strategy to neutralize Covingtons influence. The Reasons given to the flock were secondary.

Thank you Terry, for posting Rutherfords article pointing out, of all things, a PAGAN origan of Disfellowshipping. Also, of interest, is the assertion that the practice has no basis in scripture but is something the dredded Catholics cooked up. Whoda thunk the WTBT$ would so eagerly embrace a Catholic practice. Soso Confused wonders if the dubs were saddened by the new policy in the late 40's. Answer: Depends... Just as it does now. Kind people found it a horrible "test" of loyality. However, those like my parents (self-rightious and fully indoctrinated Zombies) seemed perfectly happy it was instituted. My mother told me that she had seen a lot of "CO's and pioneers get away with murder."(she meant fornication and adultry) That one CO had even made a pass at her. She said they thought if you spent a lot time in the "service" it made up for wrongdoing. Sooooo she thought "It's about time!!!"

Chances are that the milkman, pizza guy, next door neighbor, etc. are not representing themselves as God's Ministers. There is a certain amout of trust placed in those that come in the name of God. This extra trust could be dangerous in the case of a pedophile.
