Dagney, . "Appearently" what was in Rutherfraud's mind when forbiding/discouraging having children was how much more helpful to the Borg Bible students/JW's could be pioneering instead of having children. Example, my parents. They sinned and had one child, but during the 9 years of pioneering w/o a child they converted more than a dozen individuals. Do the math. That's how a few grew to be many at first. Then when the base was big enough (late 70's) then children were welcome. (sort of)

Rutherford's last book "Children" 1941- Advice DONT HAVE KIDS...Where it all started!
by Witness 007 inwatchtower 1941 sept. 15 p.283, 288 "in front of the convention platform the children recieving there free gift (copy) not as a play thing but as the lords instrument for the work in the remaining months before armagedon..." so what lovely message did the kids get from judge rutherford?
children 1941page 281 "no children were taken onto noah's ark...it is proper to wait until after armagedon to have children...its only afew more years till armagedon..." the book concluded.
"(john and his girlfriend talk) ...armagedon is surely near our hope is within afew years our marriage will be consumated and we will have sweet children...we will defer marriage and pioneer ...we will not see each other for a time.." thats why i dont have kids it all started with this fools book!.

Witness007, Not only was every kid under 18 given a free book, they were asked to get out of their seats and come up to the stage and get their copy while everyone else watched. Why? To start the indoctrination young enough to hook them for life. Rutherfraud and his cronies wanted the younger generation of dubs to do the heavy lifting by pioneering which involved spending at least 100 hrs in the minestry. Having children makes old fashioned pioneering next to impossible, therefore, it was discouraged at best, forbidden at worst.

How to make the most of wife not going to service meeting?
by FadeToBlack inout of the blue, my wife told me that after this week's service meeting on friday (co visit) she is not going to anymore meetings during the week at night.
only sunday (am) meetings.
she explained that it is difficult and not safe for her to drive after dark (vision issues: i have the same problem so i couldn't help her if i wanted to).

FTB, Just to clarify what I said earlier, I didn't mean NEVER talking things JW, just during the times she is purposely missing meetings. The idea being that you don't want to possibly spoil the mood. It should be more relaxing and loving to be home with you on meeting night. However, when she comes home from a meeting is the perfect time to ask how it went or ask what seems to be troubling her. Listen more than you talk. Validate her feelings. You can plant simple seeds of doubt with questions AFTER you find out what her issues are.

Do you remember the 15 minute break at the Sun. meeting?
by 3rdgen ina poster on another thread reminded me of when there was a 15 min.
break between the talk and the wt study on sundays.
the break was supposed to be to allow jw's time to drive their bible studys home from the talk.

Fade, you have come up with the PERFECT idea. Don't screw it up with ANY discussion of religion or any other topic that may be an issue between you. Keep it date night and then after a few wonderful weeks suggest something equally enjoyable that you two could do on Sunday. Make it something she would find hard to refuse-then do it. Again, no JW talk whatsoever. She needs to associate only pleasantness with you when she misses meetings. Good luck!

Was the Biblical Canon Directed by God?
by Chris Tann inthis is a question a sincere christian may agonize over after learning that some books of the bible were rejected by certain early christian groups, while other books that did not make the canon were accepted.
also, when one realizes that so called inspired writers of the greek scriptures quote from apocrypha, that most christians reject today, one wonders if these writings that include these quotes should even be in the bible.. it is true that when it comes to the christian greek scriptures the canon has been closed for many centuries.
also, these books have been accepted by christians ever since the second, perhaps first, century.

JW attitudes to women
by Frazzled UBM ini would be very interested to hear from you ladies on this one.
i know that the society keeps women in subjugation through the headship cr@p but didn't ahve any sense about hoew prehistoric the attitudes are until the other day when we were driving out of the supermarket car park and my wife spotted a woman dressed in tight shorts (it has been very hot here) and she commented 'they say that women who dress like that dserve to be raped'.
i did a wtf and overreacted 'how can you blame the victim like that - such attitudes give men a lciense to commit rape and make women feel they are to balme if they get raped which in turn means that rape doesn't get reported and it gopes on with impunity.

I know what it is like to be a female born into a dictatorship. Our occasional family study started with Dad demandining that my mom and I get our books and "get over here to the table for the study." Mom would then roll her eyes, whereupon Dad would pound his fist on the table loudly declaring, "I'm the head of the house here. Do it NOW!" He was a JW overseer. The Watchtower and even the wedding talks frequently quoted the scripture. "You wives be in subjection to your husbands in EVERYTHING as THIS is pleasing to the Lord." Everything means EV RE THING as the speaker would say. "Unless he asks you to do something against Gods law, strict obdience is necessary to be a proper wife." Good ole' Apostle Paul, gotta love him, also said only men could be servants in the cong and that women are not permitted to teach. Don't get me started on the screaming and 2 witness rule found in the Hebrew Scriptures. You shoulda' heard the rhetoric from the platform in the 70's! Womens Lib was denounced weekly by everyone. This indoctrination is sometimes hard to overcome I know. I developed an eating disorder because food was literally the only thing in my life I could control.

Talisin, you're so sweet! My parents moved so much that eventually we were in a Hall that had the 3:00PM meetings and I got to see the shows. Plus, my mom missed meetings from time to time and I got to stay home if she did. TV was my escape from the harsh reality of my life and my companion as an only child born into a cult.

New York, Ed Sullivan came on after Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color where I lived. Bonanza was also on Sun nights as well but I missed them when our Stupid meetings were at 6:00PM.
