No wonder so many Elders I know are Ass$%!s Instructions like question #9 foster a complete lack of empathy. No wonder so many of the decent sort have left the Borg in disgust.

I failed to say what it was like to be raised a JW. I realize the answer depends on who one's parents are, how they were raised, what kind of personality they have and most of all how strictly they followed the rules and advice of the Watchtower and its leaders.
In my case, my father was raised by a harsh alcoholic father and a JW mother. He in turn took his mothers religion and and his fathers habits and beat the snot out of me from infancy. My mother was less harsh but fully dedicated to the religion. She took every oppertunity to drag me out in the witness work with almost no breaks. This was in the 1950's when corporal punishment was strongly encouraged by the society. My dad was a dictator in our house and verbally abused my mother. My mother in turn didn't love him and never missed an oppertunity to publically and privately show him. Nothing was ever good enough for her and she was NEVER happy. She only showed approval of me if I said or did or looked EXACTLY as she wished. She regularly told me as a young child that if we would have been living in Isrealite times I would have been stoned. I did my level best to be a good little witness girl because it was crystal clear their love depended on it.
School... awful!!! I attended 13 schools in various towns because my dad would get a wild hair that they needed a kh. Lucky me, I got to be the new JW kid over and over. I was the ONLY JW in most of the schools and with no brothers and sisters I was truely on my own. My father died when i was in HS. Left alone with my mother I accepted the marriage proposal I got at 16 and married at 17just to get out of the CONTROL.

Put me down for 3rd generation born in on both parents sides. Fear of God and fear of breaking my parents hearts and wanting to do everything my older JW cousin did brought me to baptism. Having my own children and fearing God would destroy them if I didn't stay "faithful" kept me in. Brainwashing kept me from reading or even thinking anything contrary to Watchtower beliefs and kept me in control.
Injustice, hypocracy, and cruelty on the part of many in positions of oversight caused me to question and examine whether or not Holy Spirit was responsible for their appointments and their attitudes. Anger made me brave enough to go to the internet. Google brought me to this site about 9 months ago. Within a few weeks I realized the truth about the truth.

Add your favorite JW prayer cliche'
by King Solomon inyou know what i'm talking about: the trite, often-repeated phrases that convey the person offering the prayer has drawn a mental blank, and utters these words while their brain desperately searches for the next cliche', so they can conclude the ritual with the required tag, "in jesus' name we pray".... (is that like the postage stamp?).
ok, i'll kick this one off, and take the most obvious:.
"forgive us where we fall short....".

@James Woods, That idiot was at least saying what he actually thought. "All you loosers should thank God I showed up to straighten you out. Hooray for meeeeee." Wouldn't it be cool if everyone who prayed at JW meetings said what they ACTUALLY thought?
"Dear God Jehovah, Please help the speakers to say something interesting. Please help the audience to stay awake for this crap they are about to hear."

Ding, you've said it it a nutshell. JW conscience= do it our way and if it doesn't work out, you are on your own. Something else that kills me is when the overseers council a person for a conscience matter and use the ridiculous reasoning is that you are BOTHERING THE CONSCIENCE OF THE CONGREGATION. Are you kidding me???? So no one is allowed to have his OWN concience he has to fit perfectly with the concience of at least 100 others??? I smell CULT.

I had forgotton those cliche's. I was in a cong where every single person who prayed at a meeting asked for a special blessing to the pioneers and servants. Once in a while would not have bothered me -but EVERY meeting? At least once a month there was a talk counciling the dubs not to associate with the weak or those that miss meetings.(NO matter what the reason) Get togethers were limited to the pioneers and servant body and their families.
I was so lonely I signed up to Aux pio. just for the invites. LOL I was turned down because they said I missed too many book studies. I explained that my 5 and 7 yr old had the flu for weeks . They still refused. They wanted to keep pioneers as a special elite classand pray for them every meeting. Sorry, I digress.

Lostinthought, Wow talk about timing! I had to have surgery last winter soon after I had torn up my blood card. It was such a relief not to have to even discuss the issue with my doctors.

Disfellowshipped for Being Raped!

Yes, NC, you're right. Sisters have not only been disfellowshipped for not following their screaming rule, I know at least 2 victims personally who were told they could NEVER speak the name of the accused to anyone or else they would be back in the comittee room with charges such as slander, walking disorderly, and causing divisions. Not surprisingly, they are now EX JWs.
Incidently, threatening a person to shut up about a crime is illegal in California. It is called Conspiracy to intimidate a witness. I hope victims will persue their legal remedys now while the climate is favorable.

Ninja, How many years have you been a JW? Your experience is limited.
