Terry, If the story is fictional then who cares whether or not the events described therin are historically accurate? Forrest Gump comes to mind. However, I'm not a fan of being taught an "important lesson" Important to whom? The author or me? Who is your intended audience?

A PERSONAL QUESTION to help me finish my NOVEL
by Terry inhere is a personal question:.
is it disturbing to you when an author jumps into the flow of history and radically departs in order to drive an important lesson home to the reader?.
in this novel i have several watch tower leaders meeting incredibly violent deaths at the hands of --well, i won't give anything away.

The dumest thing an elder ever said to me..
by new hope and happiness inconversation with an elder...i said " did you watch due south yesterday" and he said " ive got far more important things to do".
i mean that comment of his got me to thinking and wondering, and made me see he was missing out on living..and i think that comment was the straw that broke this boys faith, and started my i dont want to be a witness anymore.
kind of wierd how a simple question opened my eyes.. and now as i write this i am watching " the rebel" a 1950s western series, and its great and its even better my 9 year old is watching with me..and there is nothing more important than being happy.. .

Lois, I don't think so because he was very close to his wife, I think he meant that the 3 of us should go out and socialize BUTTTTTT I was looking for some spiritual guidence. I had told this elder that I didn't understand why my husband had been DFed since he had expressed repentance. I was shocked how dismissive he was to my grief. BTW, they NEVER actually made a date to socialize with me. (nor did anyone else for that matter).

I dont think we should past judgement on people who post here for the first time
by smiddy injust saying , my 2 cents worth .
if they have an agenda it will be revealed in a short time , let them play it out .. however , some genuine first posters can be put off by somebody jumping the gun and attacking them .. please give the first posters time to get to know this site.. smiddy.

I agree wholehartedly! I wound up here by Googling Menlo Park Kingdom Hall because a ditsy friend was rambling on about a money grab. When i had the courage to post for the first time I was warmly welcomed. JWN gave hubby and me the info and friendship we were longing for. I am sure we aren't the only ones. If the folks here had acted like our elders well..... we would still be stuck in Watchtowerland.

Lois, LOL!!! Dumbest thing an elder said to me was "Maybe we should go out for Margaritas" when I was crying about my first husband being DFed.

Put me down for simply never, and I mean never go back to the KH. If your friends call to ask how you are say "fine" or "busy" or whatever. If they want to know WHY you aren't attending be vague. Do not say anything that could be viewed as "apostate"and quickly ask about them and their families. They will be so busy talking about themselves they will forget to press you for details! If any other JW calls-especially elders DONT ANSWER. If they leave messages, ignore them. Block your facebook and social media accounts. Sooner or later they will give up and you two will be free.

Would Your Family Stone You to Death?
by cofty inot law required jews to take the lead in stoning a family member who became apostate.. the watchtower has lamented the fact that the law of the land now forbids them from doing so.. if the law permitted it, as it does in some musim countries, and if the watchtower required it, would your family obey?.
my parents are good people and i believe their love for me is genuine, but i think they would follow orders.. what about yours?.

Cofty, I think your S. Weinberg quote is spot on. My parents would have been selfish narcissits whether or not they belonged to a religion. However, being JWs gave them implied permission to be abusive to "further Kingdom interests". OTOH, I shudder to remember the time I prayed to "have the strength to refuse blood" for my little boy when we were in the ambulance. I am pretty sure I would have been "faithful". Remember that the JW belief is that to give your child blood would cost him (and me) everlasting life but to refuse blood would assure him a chance to live forever . It was always stressed that he could die despite receiving blood whereas he might live without it now and forever. FEAR drives the religious and causes it's adhearents (often good, sincere people) to do things that otherwise would NEVER come to mind.
